Key Points of the Story
Detailed Summary
Once upon a time, there was a sailor named Gulliver. He was on a big ship, and one day, on June 16, 1730, they found land. The captain of the ship sent some men to look for water. They wanted to see if they could find a river or a spring. But when they got to the land, it was empty. There were no people, no water, and the land was bare and rocky. Gulliver decided to go explore the area by himself. He walked around but soon turned back to find his crew.
When Gulliver looked back, he saw something very scary. A giant creature was walking in the sea, and the water only reached its knees! This giant was very big, but luckily, it couldn’t reach the boat in time. Gulliver quickly ran up a steep hill. As he climbed, he saw fields of barley, which is a type of grain, growing so tall that it reached up to forty feet! He wanted to cross a fence to get to another field, but every step was very high for him.
While looking for a way through the hedge, Gulliver saw one of the giant people coming toward him. He was very frightened and hid. The giant called out loudly, and his voice was so big it sounded like thunder! Soon, more giants came to the field, and they were all carrying huge tools to harvest the grain. When one of the giants got close to where Gulliver was hiding, he screamed for help.
The giant stopped and picked Gulliver up with his fingers. Gulliver was so small compared to him; he was just a tiny figure high above the ground. The giant looked at him curiously and then showed him to his friends. They were amazed and sat down to look at Gulliver. He tried to communicate, speaking loudly in many languages, but they could not understand him.
Then, the giant took Gulliver to his house. He placed Gulliver on a very high dining table, which was thirty feet above the floor. The giant’s wife gave Gulliver some breadcrumbs, but everything was enormous for him. Suddenly, a giant cat came into the room, and it was much bigger than an ox, which is a large animal. The farmer's baby boy also came in, and when he saw Gulliver, he grabbed him and almost put him in his mouth! Gulliver screamed, and the baby dropped him, but luckily, the mother caught him before he fell hard.
After that, the lady took care of Gulliver. She put him on her bed and covered him with a soft handkerchief. That night, Gulliver fell asleep, dreaming of his home, his wife, and his children. He was far from them, but he kept thinking about his family as he slept.
