Agriculture Survey in Uttar Pradesh to Follow Karnataka's Model

Uttar Pradesh's Agriculture Minister, Surya Pratap Shahi, announced on January 1, 2023, that the state will conduct its agriculture survey based on the successful model used in Karnataka. Previously, data on Rabi, Kharif, and Zaid cultivation, production, and losses due to natural disasters were collected based on estimates.

Key Points

  • Accurate Data Collection: The new approach aims to provide precise statistics on what, how much, and where farmers are cultivating crops. This includes detailed information on the area sown and the quantity produced for each crop season.
  • Digitization: The collected data will be digitized for better management and analysis.
  • Satellite Mapping: Uttar Pradesh is preparing to implement satellite mapping in the agricultural sector. This technology will offer accurate information about the size of farmers' fields, crop sowing, and production at the village, district, and block levels. This data will help in the timely provision of necessary fertilizers, chemicals, and crop advisories to farmers.
  • Current Challenges: Currently, the agriculture and revenue departments rely on estimated assessments, which make it difficult to determine specific details about crop sowing and production, especially during disasters like heavy rains or floods.
  • Karnataka's Model: Officials from Karnataka's Agriculture and Revenue Department recently showcased their satellite survey model in Uttar Pradesh. This model was well-received and approved for implementation in Uttar Pradesh.

  • The revenue police system has been in place for many years, but the government believes that regular police will be more effective in maintaining peace and order.

Phased Implementation

  • First Phase:

  • Second Phase:
    • Establishment of 6 new police stations and 20 police outposts.
    • Bringing an additional 1,444 revenue villages under the jurisdiction of regular police.

  • Utilization of Cow By-products: Adityanath emphasized the use of cow dung for producing eco-friendly products such as cow dung paint. Additionally, he suggested exploring the potential of generating biogas (CNG and CBG) from cow dung. These initiatives would create additional revenue streams for the shelters and reduce their operational costs.
  • Capacity and Management: The presentation reviewed by the Chief Minister highlighted the plan to construct cow shelters with a capacity to accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 bovines. Adityanath stressed the importance of signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with interested non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the effective management of these shelters.

Dakshayani Pandey's Innovative Car Safety Model

On January 5, 2023, Dakshayani Pandey, a 17-year-old from Mau district in Uttar Pradesh, was awarded a full scholarship to Stanford University for her car safety model. Dakshayani, the daughter of a poor farmer, developed this model after witnessing a tragic incident on television where a child died due to suffocation in a car.

The “Mission Protector” System

  • Dakshayani's model, called "Mission Protector," is designed to enhance safety in cars by monitoring carbon dioxide levels.
  • When the carbon dioxide level inside the car rises, the system automatically rolls down the windows to allow fresh air in, preventing suffocation.
  • This is crucial because closed cars can accumulate dangerous levels of carbon dioxide, putting the lives of passengers at risk.

Recognition and Future Plans

  • Dakshayani first presented her model at the India at 75 National Ideathon-2021 held at IIT Delhi, where it won first place.
  • Following this recognition, she received a call from Stanford University, leading to her scholarship.
  • She plans to patent her "Mission Protector" system and will be heading to the United States in September 2023 to study bio-engineering and entrepreneurship.
