First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-46)

Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-49)

The Second Anglo-Sikh War was a military conflict that occurred between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Company from 1848 to 1849. This war included several significant battles, such as the Battle of Ramnagar, Battle of Chillianwala, Battle of Multan, and Battle of Gujarat.

  • On February 21, 1849, the British defeated the Sikhs at the Battle of Gujarat, leading to their takeover of Punjab.
  • Punjab was officially annexed on April 2, 1849, becoming part of British India.
  • At the time of annexation, Lord Dalhousie was the Governor-General of British India, and Dalip Singh was the King of Punjab.
