A phrasal verb is an idiomatic phrase whereby the meaning understood is different from the meaning of the individual words, e.g., break down doesn’t mean "fall and break into pieces"; it means "collapse."

Form
A main verb + a preposition

Examples:

  • She had a break down after she heard the horrific news.
  • People should not look down on those who are less fortunate.

Phrasal verbs can be:

Intransitive (they have no object):

  • These verbs are never separated.

Transitive (they can have an object):

  • Some transitive phrasal verbs can be separated.

If the direct object is a noun, you can say:
They pulled the building down.
(direct object)
OR
They pulled down the building.

If the object is a pronoun, the object always comes between the verb and the adverb.
I threw it away.
(direct object)
NOT: I threw away it.
