What is Subtraction?

Subtraction means taking away.

Subtraction up to 9 Chapter Notes | Mathematics Class 1 ICSE

  • We start with a group, remove some items, and count what’s left.
  • The symbol is “–” called minus.
  • The answer is called the difference.
  • Example: 4 – 2 = 2
  • Read “four minus two equals two.”

Subtracting Zero or the Same Number

Subtracting Zero (– 0):

  • Imagine you have 5 apples in a basket. If you don’t take any away (you remove zero), you still have all 5 apples.
  • That’s why 5 – 0 = 5.
  • Remember: “Take away nothing, keep everything!”

Subtracting the Same Number (– itself):

  • Now imagine you have 3 cookies and you give all 3 away. You took away exactly what you had.
  • After giving away 3 cookies, you have 0 left.
  • That’s why 3 – 3 = 0.
  • Remember: “Take away all, nothing remains!”

Try yourself:
What happens when you subtract zero from a number?

Subtraction on a Number Line

To subtract on a number line, we move backward.

  • Draw a line from 0 to 9.
  • To subtract, start at the first number and jump backward the second number of steps.

Example 1: 8 – 5 = ?

  • Start at 8.

  • Jump back 5 steps → land on 3.

  • So, 8 – 5 = 3.

Example 2: 7 – 1 = ?

  • Starting from 7
  • We count back 1.
  • We get the answer 6.

FAQs on Subtraction up to 9 Chapter Notes - Mathematics Class 1 ICSE

1. What is subtraction and why is it important in mathematics?
Ans. Subtraction is one of the four basic arithmetic operations, representing the process of taking one quantity away from another. It is important because it helps in understanding how to compare quantities, solve problems, and perform calculations in everyday life. Subtraction is essential for tasks such as budgeting, measuring distances, and managing time.
2. What happens when you subtract zero from a number?
Ans. When you subtract zero from a number, the value of that number remains unchanged. For example, if you have the number 5 and you subtract 0, the result is still 5. This property shows that zero is known as the "identity element" for subtraction.
3. How can a number line help in understanding subtraction?
Ans. A number line is a visual representation of numbers in a straight line. It helps in understanding subtraction by allowing you to visualize the process. For example, if you want to subtract 3 from 5, you can start at 5 on the number line and move 3 units to the left. The point where you land represents the result, which is 2.
4. What is vertical subtraction and how is it performed?
Ans. Vertical subtraction is a method of organizing numbers one under the other, aligning them by place value (units, tens, hundreds, etc.). To perform vertical subtraction, you start subtracting from the rightmost column and move left, borrowing from the next column if necessary. This method makes it easier to keep track of the numbers and ensures accurate calculations.
5. How can subtraction be applied in word problems for young learners?
Ans. Subtraction can be applied in word problems by presenting scenarios where something is taken away or a difference needs to be found. For example, if a child has 7 apples and gives away 3, the problem can be framed as "How many apples are left?" This helps young learners connect subtraction to real-life situations and improves their problem-solving skills.
