Q6. A vehicle covers a distance of 43.2 km in 2.4 litres of petrol. How much distance will it cover in one litre petrol?

Ans:
∵ In 2.4 litres of petrol, distance covered by the vehicle = 43.2 km
∴ In 1 litre of petrol, distance covered by the vehicle = 43.2 ÷2.4
NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths - Fractions and Decimals (Exercise 2.4 and 2.5)
Thus, it covered 18 km distance in one litre of petrol.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths - Fractions and Decimals (Exercise 2.4 and 2.5)

1. What are fractions and decimals?
Ans. Fractions and decimals are numerical representations used to express parts of a whole or to represent numbers with decimal points. Fractions are written in the form of a numerator and a denominator, such as 1/2 or 3/4, whereas decimals are written using the decimal point and digits after it, such as 0.5 or 0.75.
2. How do I convert a fraction to a decimal?
Ans. To convert a fraction to a decimal, you can divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, to convert 3/4 to a decimal, divide 3 by 4: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Therefore, 3/4 is equivalent to 0.75 as a decimal.
3. How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?
Ans. To convert a decimal to a fraction, identify the place value of the last digit after the decimal point. This digit represents the numerator. The denominator will depend on the number of decimal places. For example, to convert 0.25 to a fraction, the last digit 5 represents the numerator, and since there are two decimal places, the denominator is 100. Therefore, 0.25 is equivalent to 25/100, which can be simplified to 1/4.
4. How can I compare fractions and decimals?
Ans. To compare fractions and decimals, it may be helpful to convert them to a common form. For example, convert a fraction to a decimal or a decimal to a fraction. Once they are in the same form, you can compare them using the greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=) symbols.
5. How can I add or subtract fractions and decimals?
Ans. To add or subtract fractions, you need to ensure that they have the same denominator. If they don't, you can find the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators and then convert the fractions to have the same denominator. Once the denominators are the same, you can add or subtract the numerators. To add or subtract decimals, align the decimal points and perform the operation as usual.
