The objective of the National Technical Textiles Mission is to make India a leader in technical textiles globally, increase the penetration level of technical textiles in India, and increase the global market for Indian technical textiles. The scheme aims to train 10 lakh persons between 2017-2020 and upgrade traditional sectors such as handlooms, handicrafts, sericulture, and jute through skill development and upgradation.

The textile industry in India contributes approximately 14% of industrial production. It is a significant sector in the Indian economy, contributing around 4% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 17% to its export earnings. The industry employs over 3.5 crores people, making it the second largest employment sector after agriculture.

The Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) was launched in 1999 to boost investments in the textile and related sectors. It aims to provide financial assistance for the modernization and upgradation of textile machinery, technology, and infrastructure. This initiative promotes the adoption of advanced technology in the textile industry and supports its growth.
