I am the, ah, shooting sports specialist for
Texas Parks and Wildlife.
I gotta look at my card.
I'm not even sure what ... I drive the truck.
I ride the quad.
I throw the targets.

Charlie Wilson is, indeed, a force of nature.
While he hasn't been the only one involved,
he has definitely been the driving force behind
Texas Parks and Wildlife's very successful
shooting sports program.

...Charlie has travelled the state with a
truck and a trailer...

He teaches folks, most of whom have never
picked up a firearm in their lives, how to
handle a shotgun.

Kids who started with the program back in
the early nineties.
I'm seeing their kids now.

the sixth annual Ag Clays 381 Shoot-out.

Six years ago, we had 60 kids come shoot and
we had eight schools.
[girl]

This year, we have 612 entries.
[girl]
Mom, remember 35.....
[Charlie]
Have you won anything?

With the kids, he develops long-term relationships
where 500 kids all feel like he cares about
them personally and he does.
He follows them through school.
Those kids still send him cards, they come
see him after they're in college, after they're
out of college.
He's made life long participants in the outdoors
through shooting sports.
It's really an amazing thing.
[Charlie]
What happened to your teeth?
Have you been kissing girls?

Noooo!

I think we get into a trap.
We don't as adults, we seem to think that
we knowwhat's always right and what's best
for the kids and what the kids want.
[clapping]

And I've found that if you sit and talk to
the kids and listen to them, they'll pretty
much tell you what they would like to see
and how they would like to see it.

I always try to come find him as soon as I
get to a shoot.
