Nicolas Poussin announcement Video Lecture | Histoire de l'art - Art & Craft

Hi! Our new video about Nicolas Poussin stems from a very simple idea.
Although Poussin is “revered” by art historians,
the rooms of museums where his paintings are on display,
especially in Le Louvre,
are regularly empty!
So we had to solve that contradiction!
Why a painter who is so blatantly showing…
…that he is not interested in seducing us quickly,
is one of the greatest painter of history?
Hence, we made this video inquiry,
which, as you will see online, gives rise to three main results:
The first is that the biblical subject
is not what really Poussin was interested in.
Poussin is interested in playing a game with human passion.
The second result is that this game has a meaning.
There is a story told in the picture,
and this story is linked with contemporary philosophical meditations
about human liberty.
But, this is not Poussin’s last word!
What is also at stake is the liberty of the spectator in front of a painting.
So, at the end of the video, we learn that Nicolas Poussin
wanted to compete with the “movie industry” of his time,
ie dramatic works.
He is trying to turn painting into something even better than a theater play.
To achieve that goal Poussin turns to a 2000 years-old text...
"the Poetics" by Aristotle, whose precepts and rules applies to the world of drama.
Poussin transforms theses precepts into something relevant and specific to a painting.
That’s what we have to demonstrate!
