Perl Tutorial - 17: Obtaining Size of Hashes Video Lecture | Perl Building Blocks: An Introduction to Perl - Back-End Programming

hello guys welcome to my channel this is
the 17th tutorial in this course and in
this role we're gonna see how we can
determine the size of a hash in Perl so
the size of a hash would be the number
of key value pairs in the hash and you
know that would actually be the number
of keys or the number of values in the
hash and you know we're gonna do this in
a very simple way so I've got a script
here that's called hash in underscore
size and in this script on line number 3
I've got my tennis hash and it's got
four keys and four values and you know
we're going to do this in two steps so
the first thing that we're going to do
is use the keys keyword to create a list
an array variable that has all the keys
in the hash so I'm doing that on line
number five I'm gonna call that variable
my underscore list and I've used the
address symbol to create this because
it's going to be an array variable so at
my underscore list equals keys and then
the name of the hash with the percent
symbol and then on line number six I'm
going to assign this array variable to a
scalar variable size and you know
remember we did this to find the number
of elements in an array it works
perfectly well so I'm doing that on line
number six dollar size equals act my
underscore list and then on line number
eight I have a print statement to print
the size of the hash or the number of
keys in the hash and you know I'm
displaying the value in dollar size so
I'll make sure to script a save now
press f5 to run it so here we go we see
that the size the hash is four because I
have four key value pairs in the hash
