Best FREE CAD Programs for 3D Printing - 2015 Video Lecture | What is 3D Printing: Basic Knowledge - IT & Software

welcome back to 3d printing 101 here on
makers muse in this episode I'll be
going through three free CAD programs
you can use for your 3d printing try to
say that one fast number one Tinkercad
Tinkercad is super simple easy to learn
and pretty powerful in ticket cab you
construct objects through addition and
removal of basic shapes to create more
complex geometry it has heaps of awesome
tutorials built-in as well as the
ability to create and use your own shape
generators to make really complicated
shapes such as gears it also
incorporates ticker play elements which
is pretty cool because Tinkercad runs
entirely on the cloud you'll need an
internet connection and a browser that
supports WebGL to use it
number two one two 3d design another
Autodesk product this is a powerful and
free sketched based CAD program that is
perfect for stuff like electronics boxes
and anything mechanical
although experienced CAD users will find
themselves wanting more features for a
beginner it's a very friendly interface
and far more powerful than Tinkercad so
definitely a viable option to go to if
you find to geek out a bit too simple
for your needs number three on shape
although a relative newcomer on shape is
one heck of a powerful cloud-based 3d
modeling solution its ability to import
SolidWorks files hits this home and its
features are capable of modeling almost
anything although a newcomer to 3d
modeling may find on shape quite
daunting it has some great tutorials and
its sketch based modeling approach is
logical and easy to learn one
disadvantage of on shape is it's free
account is heavily restricted to only 5
private documents however you can have
an unlimited amount of public designs
which may or may not be an issue for you
they've already started to roll out
support for mobile devices and according
the product the future of CAD to be
honest I don't do houses even the paid
subscriptions are well worth it when
compared to for example a single
SolidWorks seat which could easily be
over $10,000 and as a wild card I'm
going to stick blender in here I'm not
much of an organic 3d model and myself
but blender is one of the most powerful
solutions out there and it's completely
free and open source to boot blender
isn't really designed for 3d printing
it's more of a 3d animation tool however
with a bit of discipline it can use to
create amazing 3d designs of printing
just be prepared for a very steep
learning curve even coming from Solid
Works Runner and other high end CAD
solutions I find blender very
alien and difficult to use so stop - Lee
browsing theme Universal Design what you
really want using any of these free CAD
