How to Create Seamless Textures in Photoshop
Welcome back to another very exciting tutorial
here at the PhotoshopTrainingChannel.com.
My name is Jesus Ramirez and you can find

In this video, I'm going to show you how to
create seamless textures in Photoshop.
We will use the Clouds Filter to generate
the texture that we will use in this example
and use some of Photoshop's editing tools
to remove the seam.
I'll also show you a cool little trick that
takes advantage of how the Cloud Filter's
algorithm works so that you can create seamless
textures by simply choosing the right canvas
size.

Okay, let's get started.
The first thing that I'm going to do is create
a new document, so I'm going to click on the
New button and I'm just going to create a
document.
The size really doesn't matter at this point.
Now, in this tutorial, I'm going to show you
how to create seamless textures using the
Clouds Filter, but you can apply this technique
to any photo that you like.
So, we'll generate clouds by going into Filter,
Render, Clouds.
What I mean by seamless texture is that when
I have a layer, if I click on the Move Tool,
move it over to the right, then hold Alt,
Option on the Mac, click and drag to duplicate
and duplicate that layer, the edges have a
seam.
So if I want to create a pattern or wrap this
around a 3D model, there will be a seam.
So, the goal of this tutorial is to learn
how to remove those seams, not necessarily
the Clouds Filter, but that's what we're going
to use.
As a side note, I would like to point out
that if you are using the Clouds Filter and
you want to create a seamless texture, there's
actually a quicker, faster way.
If you go into File and New and create a New
Document, with dimensions that are a power
of 2, meaning 2, 4, 8, 16, 64, 128, 256, 1024
and so on, you can actually create seamless
clouds automatically.
Let me show you what I mean by that.
I'm just going to create a document that's
1024 by 1024.
In this example, the width and height are
the same, but they don't have to be as long
as both are a power of 2.
Click on Create, then I can go into Filter,
Render, Clouds, and these clouds are seamless.
If I unlock the layer and duplicate it and
put them side by side, you'll notice that
there is no seam.
That is because the algorithm that creates
Clouds generates a seamless clouds texture
when the canvas width and height have dimension
that are a power of two.
Another way of showing you that this is a
seamless pattern is by going into Filter,
Other, Offset.
And if I click and drag on the horizontal
slider or vertical, you won't see any seams.
I want to cancel out of this dialogue box
and I'll show you with the original texture
that I created how that works, so I'm going
to go into Filter, Other, Offset, and if I
drag the horizontal slider to the right, I'm
going to add 221 pixels to the right.
That means that this space here is 221 and
we see the seam right here.
This is where the edge used to be.
This used to be the edge here on the left-hand
side.
Now it is 221 pixels to the right.
I can do the same thing with the vertical
slider.
So, now, this one is 233 pixels down from
the top.
So this line here used to be the edge on top
and what we're doing is wrapping around the
edge pixels.
So make sure that wrap around is selected;
so that's before, that's after.
Then, I can press OK.
Now, no matter what image you're using, you
can use this technique to reveal the edges
and you can fix those edges by using any of
the editing tools in Photoshop.
You can use the Spot Healing Brush Tool, so
click and drag and heal those edges or you
can use something like the Clone Stamp Tool,
where you can click on the Clone Stamp Tool,
hold Alt, Option on the Mac, click to sample,
and paint and remove the edge pixels.
Sometimes, you may need to go into Filter,
Other, Offset once again, to see different
parts of the edges that you might have missed
and continue adjusting those edges accordingly.
And you can use this technique with almost
any photo to create seamless textures and
seamless patterns.
And that's it for this tutorial.
