How To Use The CONTENT-AWARE Move Tool in Photoshop - Move or Expand Objects Video Lecture | Mastering Adobe Photoshop CC 2017: Step by Step Tutorials - Design

Welcome back to another very exciting tutorial
here at the PhotoshopTrainingChannel.com.

In this video, we're going to talk about the
Content-Aware Move Tool.
The Content-Aware Move Tool allows you to
move an object in an image to a different
location.
Photoshop will automatically fill the hole
left behind by the object.
In this tutorial, I'm also going to show you
how to duplicate, expand and contract objects
in an image with the Content-Aware Move Tool.

Okay, let's get started.
So, we're going to be working with this image
here of these hot air balloons.
This is an Adobe Stock image.
You can download the free watermarked version
if you like.
There's a link to it right below in the description.
So, you may want to move things around to
create negative space for text or simply to
make them look better.
You can move things with the Content-Aware
Move Tool, which is nested under the Spot
Healing Brush Tool, Content Aware Move.
Make sure that your mode is set to Move, Structure
at 4 and Color at 4, Sample All Layers, and
Transform on Drop.
We're going to talk about each of these options
later, but for now, let's all work with the
same options.
Then, I'm going to click and drag and make
a selection around the balloon.
Then, I'm going to click and drag it to the
side and tap on the check mark.
Photoshop will fill the hole.
This is sort of like a Content-Aware Fill
and now we have the balloon here on the side.
I'm going to press Ctrl D, Command D, to deselect.
And that is basically how the tool works,
but it's actually more powerful than this.
I'm going to show you several different techniques
that you can use to increase the power of
the Content-Aware Move Tool.
So, I'm going to press Ctrl Alt Z, Command
Option Z on the Mac, and I'm going to do that
several times just to go back to the original
image.
I still have the selection active and that's
okay.
One thing that you can do when you're moving
the object with the Content-Aware Move Tool
is that you can scale and rotate them.
So, I'm going to click and drag it to the
side and I'm going to hover over the corner
handle, hold Shift, click and scale that down,
hover over the corner handle again, and when
you see the arc arrow, I can click and rotate
that balloon, then I'm going to tap on the
check mark, and now we have rotated, scaled,
and moved the hot air balloon.
I going to press Ctrl D, Command D to deselect
and you can see what the final result looks
like.
Now, this will not work if you have "Transform
on Drop" unchecked, so let me uncheck that,
make a selection, and show you what happens
when that is not checked.
So, I'm going to move it to the side, then
I'm going to press Ctrl T, Command T, to transform
to get the corner handles, scale it down and
rotate.
This time, I'm just going to hit Enter on
the keyboard, Return on the Mac, to commit
the changes, and notice how we have this hole
left behind.
So make sure that "Transform on Drop" is checked
if you're going to be scaling and rotating
your objects.
So, I'm going to press Ctrl Alt Z, Command
Option Z on the Mac, several times to undo.
Now, you can also work non-destructively with
this tool, so I'm going to create a new layer,
and notice that "Sample All Layers" is checked,
so I'm going to move the hot air balloon to
the side.
I'm going to scale it and rotate it, maybe
scale it some more, and hit Enter, Return
on the Mac, and so far, this looks just like
the previous example, but if I disable the
original hot air balloon layer, you'll see
that the pixels were generated in a new layer.
So, you see the Content-Aware Fill here and
then the rotated scaled down version of the
hot air balloon here, so you can work non-destructively.
I'm going to press Ctrl D and I'm going to
do a couple of undo’s once again just to
get back to where we were and we're going
to work with a different image now to explain
the different modes and structures and color.
So, I'm going to enable this layer titled
pillars and one thing I want to show you before
we go any further is a keyboard shortcut so
you can start making your freehand selections,
but then if you hold Alt, Option on the Mac,
you can go into the Polygonal Lasso Tool so
you can make selections that way as well,
and then you can just release the old key
and continue doing your freehand selection
and hold Alt again and go back to the Polygonal
Lasso Tool.
So, you can switch back and forth between
the two and then, of course, you can just
click and drag and move that pillar to the
other side and hit Enter, Return on the Mac,
to commit the changes.
I'm going to undo those changes and I'm going
to change the mode to Extend.
So, so far, we've been moving things around
in Photoshop, but you can also extend them
and contract them.
So, I'm just going to make a selection around
this pillar here, and I'm going to hold the
Alt key, Option on the Mac, to get the Polygonal
Lasso Tool.
Now I have that selection there and I can
click and drag this up to expand it, and there
it is.
Now we have a taller pillar.
And I'm going to make a selection around this
pillar, click and drag it down, release and
Enter, and now I have a shorter pillar, so
you can do those adjustments.
Another thing that you can do with the Extend
Tool is actually duplicate things.
So, I'm going to go back into the hot air
balloon layer, and once again, I'm going to
make a selection around this hot air balloon.
This time, I'm on the Extend Mode, so I'm
going to click and drag it to the side and
I'm going to hit Enter, return on the Mac,
and I duplicated that balloon.
I can make another duplicate and this time,
I'm going to scale it down and rotate it just
a bit, and there it is.
And I can keep making as many duplicates as
I want.
So that is something that you can do with
the Extend.
You can extend something, contract it or duplicate
it.
I'm going to press Ctrl D, Command D, to deselect.
And the last thing that we're going to talk
about in this tutorial is the structure and
color.
Structure has values between 1 and 7.
These values represent how closely the patch
will represent existing patterns.
If you enter 7, the patch adheres strongly
to the existing image patterns.
If you enter a 1, a patch adheres very loosely
to the existing patterns.
Color goes from 0 to 10 and these values control
the algorithmic color blending for the patch.
Zero means that blending is disabled.
A value of 10 means maximum color blending.
And I know that tends a little confusing,
so let me just show you how they work, so
I'm going to go back to where we were when
we started which was Structure of 4 and Color
of 4.
And I'm going to make a freehand selection
around that hot air balloon and we can click
and drag the balloon to the side and we can
tap on the check mark to commit the changes,
and it works as you expected, but we can actually
come in and control the Color and Structure
now, even after applying that change.
So, I'm going to just bump up the color all
the way to 10 so you can see the change and
zero.
If the selection is distracting, you can press
Ctrl H, Command H on the Mac, to hide, and
you can continue making your adjustments.
Notice how the pixels change when I slide
this slider.
I can do the same thing for Structure.
That's at 1 and that's at 7, so you can just
adjust these and see what type of changes
they give you.
So, if you make a Content-Aware Move and things
are not looking right, make sure that you
adjust the Structure and Color right after
you make the drop.
I'm going to press Ctrl H, Command H, again
to bring back the selection.
So, if I make a selection and I move the hot
air balloon to the side and tap on the check
mark or hit Enter, Return on the Mac, I can
continue adjusting the Structure and Color.
But, if I disable the selection, then I can
no longer control it.
So, you can control it right after the move.
