Ans. A metre bridge works on the principle of Wheatstone bridge. When a known resistance is balanced against an unknown resistance, the current in the galvanometer becomes zero. This balance point is used to determine the value of the unknown resistance.

Ans. The law of combination of resistors states that the total resistance in a series combination of resistors is equal to the sum of individual resistances, while in a parallel combination, the reciprocal of the total resistance is equal to the sum of reciprocals of individual resistances.
| 4. How can I calculate the unknown resistance using a metre bridge? | |
Ans. To calculate the unknown resistance using a metre bridge, the known resistance is adjusted until the galvanometer shows zero deflection. The ratio of the lengths of the wire on either side of the jockey is equal to the ratio of the known and unknown resistances. By using this ratio, the unknown resistance can be calculated.
| 5. Can a metre bridge be used to measure resistance of any value? | |
Ans. A metre bridge is most suitable for measuring resistances in the range of 1 to 10,000 ohms. If the resistance is too low, the current passing through the galvanometer may be too high, leading to inaccurate readings. Similarly, if the resistance is too high, the current passing through the galvanometer may be too low to be measured accurately.
