21 WordPress 101 Updating WP to the New Version Video Lecture | WORDPRESS Premium- Tools and Tips - IT & Software

hello and welcome to this my theme shop
video screencast in today's video I'm
gonna be showing you how to update your
WordPress installation both using the
built in WordPress automatic updater and
updating manually so what an update is
available in your WordPress installation
your going to get a notification on your
dashboard and you can see that here it
says WordPress version 4.3 point one is
available please update now and for most
people this is going to be the simple
way to update your WordPress
installation it's going to let you use
the WordPress automatic updater and we
can see if we click this then we're
going to get some additional detail
loading up here it's going to tell us a
bit more about the version that's
available so it's version four point
three point one and it's as simple as
just clicking this button here but just
before you do that it's important to
note that you should have a backup of
your database and files before upgrading
just in case anything goes wrong with
the upgrade process you might have to
use a backup plugins such as my WP
backup from my theme shop so you can
just click update now and we're going to
see that WordPress is going to just take
a minute to download the update from the
wordpress.org site and it's just going
to take a moment to go through that and
we're gonna see once that is completed
we're going to get directed to the
update page it's going to tell us a bit
about the update and I can see here this
is updated to WordPress 4.3 point one
and I visit the dashboard we're going to
see that we are now running WordPress
4.3 point one and everything is working
perfectly so that's how to do the
automatic update for your WordPress
install just really really simple there
now here I've just switched back to a
previous version of WordPress again and
now I'm going to show you what the
manual update looks like this is
slightly more involved and you might
want to do this is perhaps your update
has failed doing it automatically in
order to update manually the first thing
we do is go to plugins and then
deactivate all of our plugins so you can
see here that I've already done that any
plugins you've got you need to
deactivate
those before you start next thing today
is to head over to wordpress.org /
download and then click download on the
latest version of WordPress but you're
going to find on the right hand side
here you don't want to save that to your
computer and now you want to open this
file up so I'm going to do that here and
so we're going to see we've got we've
got WordPress for point 3.1 and I've
just unzipped that from chrome and you
want to navigate either using FTP access
or if you're running locally then you
can use your file manager here and you
want to open up your WordPress install
so on the right hand side we've got the
latest version of WordPress and on the
left hand side this is my installation
of WordPress first thing to do is to
folders you need to delete if you want
to click on WP admin and WP includes and
you want to delete both of those you now
want to copy over or if you're using FTP
upload WP admin and WP includes from the
latest version of WordPress onto your
site
next you want to go into your WP content
folder and you want to overwrite the
individual files that have been updated
in WordPress however you don't want to
overwrite all of the files so I'm just
going to copy these here and say I want
to replace existing files so it's very
important that you replace only existing
files but you do not delete any of your
content files so if we now just head
back to the root and we just find
nothing to do is to copy over all of
these loose files and you can note here
I've excluded WP content and I've also
not got WP admin and WP includes it's
just these loose files in the root of
the directory so just again just copy
and you want to replace all of these
with the new versions if you now head
back to your site and if we click on the
main dashboard here we're going to see
that the update is now in process and we
just need to update the version of the
database so just need to press this
button here and the WordPress database
been successfully updated and if we now
continue then we're going to see that we
are now running WordPress four point
three point one which at the time of
recording is the latest version of
WordPress just one final thing to show
you which if your update has fails then
you're going to see a message that looks
like this saying briefly unavailable for
scheduled maintenance please check back
in a minute now the way to fix this and
remove this message is to log in to your
sites FTP again and you want to find the
dot maintenance file here and just
delete that move that to my trash and if
you now refresh your site then you're
going to see that you've got the
standard WordPress installed back how it
should be so if you've got an auto
update perhaps gone wrong then you just
need to delete the dot maintenance file
no need to panic there it's very easy to
fix so as you can see updating WordPress
is very easy to do hopefully this videos
