13 WordPress 101 Introduction to WordPress Post Formats Video Lecture | WORDPRESS Premium- Tools and Tips - IT & Software

WordPress has built in a feature called
post formats and this allows you to
choose an appropriate format to change
the style of your post to fit your
content in today's quick video I'm going
to be showing you how to use post
formats on your WordPress site first
thing to do is to head over to the new
poster screen and you're - yep head over
from your WordPress dashboard hover over
posts and then click and new from here
you're going to see the standard content
area in the center but on the right hand
side we've got this post format box
now this isn't supported by all
WordPress themes so if you don't see
this then your theme does not support
post formats and you can move on from
this video but this will show you how to
use post formats if you've got them they
are included in a lot of WordPress
themes so these are different ways of
styling your posts to suit the type of
content standard is a default what
you'll normally find on a blog post and
this is typically used just for standard
blog posts where you just got some
content they have some images and some
text and some video as well perhaps so
I'm just going to add a title here
showing post formats I'm just going to
paste in some content I've already
created with the standard post format if
I now publish that then we're going to
see what that looks like I'll just open
that up in a new area and here we'll see
we just got a standard blog post and
we've just got the content this playing
with the title and the content below it
if I change this to an aside though then
update that I'll show you what this
looks like here if we now refresh then
we're going to see that the title is
made smaller and it says a side at the
bottom and you can also sort by all of
those asides but if I visit the home
page of my site then we're going to say
this is a smaller type of content that
fits more compactly and the idea is it's
useful just little aside comments that
you want to make on your site for the
next post format which is images I'm
going to create a new post again and
this time just going to add an image to
it so the image I want to use is
picture of a city at night I'm just
going to add that title in and then
press add media and upload the image I
want to add here so I'm just going to
drag and drop this on to the WordPress
media library and I'm just gonna add a
caption to this which will say let's now
to this photo of the city like you kind
of course add whatever couch needs like
I'm just going to insert that into the
post so you've got the picture with the
caption on it for now set that post
format to image and click publish then
I'll show you what this looks like if we
just view this post then we're going to
see we've got the picture with the title
displayed slightly smaller and again
you're gonna see at the bottom we've got
the post type listed as the image and we
can then sort by those types of post
type and if we look at the home page
then we'll see we've got this image
displaying here on this side and then
I'll standard post type and you can just
see what that looks like there the other
post types you've got include video
quotes link gallery a statist audio and
chat video is much the same you just
need to insert the video instead of your
image I'll show you what quotes look
like here I just add a new post then I
can add in my post title which is quite
from Steve Jobs I want to add here and
then I can just paste in my quote and
put it in a block quote and then put
attribute that as well
if I use the quote post format and
publish that then we're gonna say if we
view the post what that looks like
and you'll see we've got the quote post
format and I might perhaps like to use
that without the post title and it's
just another way you've got of using
these post format in order to get the
styling on your blog exactly how you
want it so now if we visit the home page
of our blog we're going to see we've got
this quote without the title and then
the other post formats we've got and
you'll see it integrates a little bit
nicer with our site
we just head back to the new post area
though for links and galleries it's much
the same as the others it's just a way
of quickly dropping in a link post or if
you're inserting it gallery a status
I'll show you what this looks like you
might want to use this for updating on
your site so if I just had a quick
update and I might want to put a update
about scheduled maintenance or just
anything like that and that's what you
probably want to use the status for and
that's going to display like this if we
just have a look here then you'll see
you've got this status displaying below
that and on sometimes that might also
include your avatar along with that in
order and that has more Facebook style
status on that and the last ones here
use our audio and chat these are
typically used for the audio ones if
you're displaying any audio embeds such
as a podcast or music from SoundCloud or
thelike and chat you'd want to use for a
conversation and again you could use the
block quote in order to use that but as
you see using post formats is really
easy all you need to do is select the
post format that you want to use you can
of course use any of these for any type
of content if you specifically like the
styling and if you don't have those on
your theme that's because they don't
support them but you'll want to check
these out and see how your theme
reflects each of the different post
formats and some of them will add a
unique twist to all of those hopefully
