introduction to Venn diagrams Venn
diagrams are used to illustrate the
relationship between a finite number of
sets graphically these diagrams consists
of rectangles and closed curves
generally circles the universal set is
represented usually by a rectangle and
it's subsets by circles these are also
known as primary diagram set diagram or
logic diagram let's see an example
consider the following two sets the
universal set for these two sets could
possibly be the set of integers from 1
to 5 we can draw the Venn diagram for
these sets like this as discussed we
have represented Universal set by a
rectangle and the sets a and B as the
circles within the rectangle the capital
letter outside the rectangle and the
circle denotes the name of the set while
the letters inside them denote the
elements of the set now consider the
following two sets the universal sets
for these sets remain the same as in the
previous example the Venn diagram for
these sets would look like this note
that since the sets a and ve have one
common element that is 3 it is shared by
the circles representing these sets
within the Venn diagram so we can see
that the region of intersection of the
circles includes the common elements of
the sets let's discuss one more example
consider the following two sets the
universal set remains the same in this
example as well we can drop a Venn
diagram for these sets like this observe
that the set B is the subset of the set
a and hence the circle representing the
set B lies completely within this circle
representing the set a
in the Venn diagram so this was about
