Blender 2.7 Tutorial #65 Knife Project Tool #b3d Video Lecture | Learn and Master: Blender (English) - Professional Skills

welcome our 65 of avicii somebody's
wonder 2.7 in this video we'll be
talking about the knife project tool
which is very similar to the knife tool
I've talked about in part 23 of this
video series if you're not sure what the
knife tool is go ahead and check out
that video I'll put a link to that on
the screen right now and in the
description area below the knife tool is
great because you can manually create
edges by cutting with a knife on the
surface of a mesh and you can even use
advanced tools or some of the options in
the knife tool to cut through your mesh
but there are some times where you might
want to actually predefined the cuts
that you're making in a separate mesh
kind of like a cookie cutter so we're
gonna get into that using the knife
project tool in this video before I jump
in though I just want to thank all of my

I'll go ahead and jump in now let's go
ahead and click on the splash screen
together but we're gonna use this
default cube for this video but I'm
gonna go ahead and press tab to go into
edit mode and yes because of popular
demand I have rien abled the screencast
keys the add-on was removed from blender
several versions ago but I've gone ahead
and added it via a Python script back
into blender so now when I press a key
on my keyboard or Mouse you'll see it
down here in my 3d viewport I'm in edit
mode pressing tab on this object on my
keyboard and I'm gonna subdivide this
mesh up so we can actually get a bit of
a higher density match so I'll press W
on my keyboard with all the vertices
selected W brings up the specials menu
I'm gonna select subdivide and I'm just
gonna cut down here on my tool shelf or
something umber of cuts to let's say
three let's go ahead now and create a
separate cookie cutter object so I'm
gonna press tab to go back into object
mode I'll press shift a on my keyboard
to add a new mesh of course if a is
Bertrand for the add menu when you're
making a cookie cutter object it could
not have faces it can be a Mass Effect
it needs to be a mesh but it cannot have
faces so what I recommend you do is
either create a circle object which is
what I'm gonna do right now so I'll
click on add mesh and then circle and
then if I move that out here you can see
a circle is just a connected ring of
edges otherwise I'll press X and delete
that circle and I'll press shift again
I'm gonna add a mesh tourists if I move
that torus out and press tab to go to
edit mode and I select everything with
the a key I can press X on my keyboard
to get rid of all of the vertices X
brings up the delete menu of course and
now I'm just left with an empty object
that only has an origin in other words
there's nothing in this mesh except for
the its location in the origin but if I
hold ctrl down right now and I left
click with control held down I could
actually create a sequence while in
vertices select mode a sequence of
connected vertices connected of course
by edges so you can create basically
your own custom shape I'm kind of making
like a pac-man kind of a shape there
from whatever random you haven't been
looking at my scene from if I want to
connect this vertices in fact what I'll
do is I'll press tab to go into object
mode move that out so you can see it if
I want to connect the two ends I can
hold ctrl down and click one more time
to get a vertice just out there and I'll
select both of those vertices again in
vertices select mode down there and I'll
press W and select merge which is also
alt M and I'll select merge at last so
now we have a closed circle if want to
take this kind of a backwards pac-man
shape and cut that out of my square it's
actually quite easy it actually does
depend on how your view is positioned
and the rotation and location and scale
of your object what I'll do here is I'm
going to grab just with a G key that
mesh and we went to right about there
I'll press s to scale it down and I'll
put it right about there so if I want to
cut a pac-man or the shape out of my
cube but exactly as I see it right now
what I can do is I can select my cookie
cutter object first hold shift and
right-click and select the cube second
so I've got my cookie cutter object
elected first I've got the cut out
object or the one I want to cut using
this cookie cutter second like the last
if I press tab now it'll go into edit
mode of the most recently selected
object and now over here on my tool
shelf I can find in edit mode of the
second object the knife project button
so if I click on that you're gonna see
quite quickly that it just made a bunch
of new edges exactly where the edges of
my pac-man shape sort of work
now that's one more option here if I
want to actually have it cut through not
just the faces that I can currently see
but actually cut all the way through the
object down here of course on the bottom
of our tool shelf if you can't see that
you can press this little plus and it'll
bring it up I can enable cut through and
that will actually cut through both
sides of the mesh so as you can see now
I've orbited away from that first view
and you can see where the actual edges
are so I can go to face like mode now
you can see all those faces are selected
on both sides now what this actually
comes in useful is let's say that you
want to make a cut on a edge or on a
rounded surface so I'm actually go ahead
and press tab to go back into object
mode I'll press X and delete both of
those objects I'm gonna add so I'll
press shift a I'm gonna add a new
cylinder I'm gonna add a new circle
object so I'll press shift a I'll add a
mesh circle I'll move that out I'm gonna
rotate that I'm so I'll press R and then
I'll press Y and ninety and press Enter
so that's gonna be rotated 90 degrees on
the y axis if I want to cut a circle out
of the side of this cylinder
that would be a tricky thing because if
I just use the knife tool I wouldn't get
a perfect circle if I use the boolean
tool well sometimes the boolean modifier
or boolean tool doesn't work that well
this has to be more reliable so what I'm
gonna do is I'm gonna pan over by
holding the shift key and kind of Center
that in my view now of course when you
use this knife project tool it will
create in guns and you'll see that in
just a moment
and off you know what I end on is all
explained I just a moment as well I'm
gonna select my cookie cutter object to
the circle first I'll hold shift right
click
object I want to cut into I'll press tab
to go into edit mode and now I'll click
on knife project over here in the first
tool tab of the tool shelf and as you
can see now I have a cut all the way
through because I still have cut through
enabled so that's a really basic use of
a knife Project tool one more way that
you can use it though if you want to and
I'm gonna go ahead and press tab to go
back into object mode and of us extol
eat both of my selected objects what I
might want to do here is make a very
intricate cut away from an object that
already exists in my scene
what I mean by that if I press shift a
and I add a new cube and I press shift a
I'm gonna add a mesh cone this time I
need to leave that Co no because we
can't use meshes that have faces for our
cookie cutter object so I'll press tab
go into its edit mode I'll press X lead
all of its faces and so now if I go back
into my front view uh plus one and then
five to go to front orthographic if I
hold ctrl down now because I have no
other vertices or edges or faces in this
mesh I'm still in edit mode of that cone
that I made if I want to make and spend
time making a party I'm gonna press a a
few more times and press X to make sure
I get rid of all of my vertices in there
so now I can hold ctrl down and left
click oh pardon me in order to make new
vertices that are connected you have to
be in vertice mode right there so I've
got a few there I'll select the ball
with a it I'll press X and delete those
vertices so in order to hold ctrl down
and left-click to make a string of
vertices you have to be in vertices
select mode which I didn't without that
wasn't done so let's go ahead and I'll
hold ctrl down I'll left-click to make a
custom shape this is what I mean if you
want to make a cut away from uh specific
object in a very precise way and be able
to edit it I'm not gonna be that precise
or do anything actually looks like
anything here I can go through and make
that connected string vertices I'll
press tab to go back into object mode
I'll move that forward so I can actually
see it from my front view and now what I
can do is I can select my cookie cutter
object hold shift right click and select
the cube ii press tab
knife project tool and select cut
through now got that same carefully
crafted edge on both sides of the mesh I
can now select the faces and I'll press
ctrl+ to get all those faces I can press
X now and delete these faces so now I
have that cut away and if I really feel
like closing that off I can select in
edge select mode are the opposite edges
on both sides and I can press F to fill
them in there's a little few edges right
there I'll press F I'll just do this
quickly so that's a really quick
demonstration of the knife project tool
