in this lesson we will be doing simple
subtraction with only the earthly beads
in the hundreds column that means we're
going to be using all three of these
ones tens hundreds so just a reminder
we're doing subtraction which is the
opposite of addition when we add
something we move it towards the beam
when when we subtract something or take
away something or minus something we
move it away from the beam okay to let
put the number 241 on your abacus 241
looks like this 241 there is the number
240 and 1 on our abacus and we were
going to take away from that or subtract
from that the number 101 so the problem
that we're doing is 241 - 101 now how do
we write the number 101 it's important
that you know how to write these numbers
because 101 is actually a kind of tricky
number so the number 101 is written a 1
0 and a 1 so let's take away 101 from
this that means we slide down a 1 there
we don't do anything in the tens column
because that had a zero and we take away
one here so the number 241 - 101 is 140
140 a 1 a 4 and a 0 is pronounced or we
say that 140 okay clear your abacus
put the number 433 on there 433 and the
problem we're going to do is 433 - 211
so 433 - 211 well how do we write 211 we
say 2 1 1 211 so let's take those
numbers away that means we take away the
number 2 here the number 1 here and the
number 1 here
well what are we left with what is that
number say a 2 a 2 and a 2 222 so 433 -
211 is 222 222 all right put the number
141 on your abacus 141 and let's do 141
- 121 so how do I write the number 121
it's a 1 & 2 & a 1 121 so that means I
take away 1 here I'm going to take away
2 here and 1 here
oh and what am I left with just 2 beads
in the tens column so a 2 & a 0
how do I say that 20 so 141 minus 121 is
the number 22 0 20 all right let's do
one more clear you're awesome

222 although this one will be easy you
can do this one
222 - two - that was the answer to one
of our earlier problems 222 -
or take away or subtract 111 how do I
write the number of 111 well it's all
ones one and one and one so 222 minus
111 is what am I left with
oh did I get that right 1 1 1 111 Oh
222 minus 111 is 111 1 1 1 111
so you just whether you realize it or
not this may not seem like a big deal to
you but that you just did a big problem
I mean you're all the way in the
hundreds column and you're realizing
that it's not even a bit harder than the
ones column you're just doing like it

it's no bigger than the beads that are
in one column at any one time and it's
easy because you're already a pro at
addition and you know that you're just
doing the opposite it's not any harder
it's just the opposite direction instead
of going towards the beam you're going
away from the beam and that's how you
subtract alright so go ahead and print
off your worksheet and become a master
simple subtraction so that we can move
on to the next one and it's going to be
simple subtraction as well but we're
going to start using the heavenly beads
