okay so in this tutorial I'm going to go
over like some some basic strokes that
it's important for you to get a handle
on whatever you're drawing in pen and
ink of course you're not limited to two
these strokes where you have to only use
these but these should definitely be in
your arsenal because you'll find that
you'd use them over and over and over
again so the more you practice them the
better and as I say practice makes
perfect but you should practice the
right things you know and as we will
notice with most of my tutorials it's
about sticking to the basics you know
you build with the foun T if you if you
make your foundation right then
everything will take care of itself
alright so of course the perhaps the
most common types of lines that is
important to learn is the just basic
chokes so you should be able to create a
as much fat you know what I think I'll
just um make like a little grid here of
like um of boxes that I'll fill in and
so that way you can see that the space
is just kind of organized in terms of
where you put your lines in alright so
um as I said one of the most important
types of lines it's important for you to
be able to create are just vertical
lines not necessarily vertical I mean
just the straight continuous evenly
spaced lines you should be able to do
that for a given space just create
straight lines alright it's pretty
simple and that's vertically as well
and horizontally alright you should just
be able to create evenly split evenly
spaced straight lines
and do some diagonal ones just by
themselves and it's good to practice
this so your hands become steady you
know just straight evenly spaced lines
I'm using a 0.1 is there the most basic
type of stroke you use let it up now
right after this I think the next most
popular types of lines you use or and
these are called hatched lines right or
the next type of lines you use or
crosshatch lines all right now or
clusters of short lines so now it's
almost like the same lines but shorter
so now you have they look like pretty
much like this
all right here they're arranged in
little clusters those small groups and
notice if one thing that you will notice
is that I'm being consistent you know
I'm not doing something like um maybe
you know what maybe one day I'll do
another tutorial on some do's and don'ts
so you see things that you should avoid
but if there's one thing you'll notice
is that I'm pretty consistent with my
lines and that is very important because
when you're drawing you're creating the
illusion of reality so but the thing is
whoever's looking at your drawing is not
seeing what you're looking at so you
have to be careful of creating or
drawing or depicting what they will
interpret in the right way you know you
can mean to do something and people see
something else so you have to picture
yourself in the position of the viewer
looking at your work now see you have
made the clusters of lines and they're
all pretty much a vertical now you can
also mismatch these so for example you
can have them being perpendicular to
each other
I have perpendicular clusters of lines
you know this is this is very good
practice very good practice see I'm
having on perpendicular clusters here
and after this pretty much got the idea
you can also stagger them as you can
have these questions and I'm going to
stagger them so here there you know
aligned here they are perpendicular now
I'm going to stagger them or angled
however you want to describe it but I'm
sure you guys understand what I'm saying
and that's the the key idea
so notice there are no no continuous
they're always being disrupted by
another group of lines every group is
being disrupted by another group and
that's the idea there's no necessary
necessarily set pattern it's just you
just keep going like this and you can
see the variety of uses it can you know
there are infinite ways you can apply
these lines all right so I think the
other of course naturally after this
another important groups of lines you
have or crosshatch lines these are very
very very important I think I use these
more than any other groups of lines of
my drawings so now you have essentially
crosshatch lines or just lines you have
okay these are the groups that you
crosshatch you know the vertical you
have the horizontal for groups there's a
diagonal from considered right to left
upper right to lower left or the other
group is the other diagonal which is
from upper left to lower right or right
and lower right however you want to look
at it but diagonal in the opposite
direction so these are pretty much the
four groups of lines that you crosshatch
now you can crosshatch them in pretty
much a variety of ways so you can cross
ash them one way is you have the
vertical against say horizontal
you can have the vertical against that
this diagonal you can have the vertical
against the other diagonal right you can
have diagonal against diagonal you can
have the horizontal against the diagonal
one diagonal and then you have the
horizontal against the next diagonal
alright
so that's another those are the six main
types ways that you can crosshatch these
straight lines now of course you can
also combine these in different ways or
you can layer them in different ways you
can um you know for example the vertical
and the diagonal and another diagonal
over that and you can that can be enough
or you can you know you can combine them
however you want and as I had mentioned
in another tutorial that you choose that
based on whatever you're drawing you
know and listen to the form I mean that
figuratively you know you listen to the
form that you're drawing so in a sense
you use whatever you think is best to
describe that texture or that form that
you're drawing or trying to depict
alright another groups of lines you can
use are flowing lines alright or curving
lines and these can be short like so so
generally call the line of beauty so
it's basically concave in a convex
convex concave our view when I look at
depending on perspective right and
that's essentially it you should be able
to repeat these lines over and over
again you look at a lot of drawings and
these lines are very very effective
especially where they're very useful
especially where forms combine where you
have one form that's convex meeting
another form that's on convex as well
but there's a little you know
indentation in between alright so
they're very useful for example if you
continue this you know you'll see a
wave-like motion
can use this for hair you can use this
for you know a variety of different
purposes right now they just look like
you know waves but again you know try to
hope exercise of this is to practicing
these basic strokes you you can develop
a level of consistency you can reproduce
them over and over again and that's what
tells you know someone who really knows
their stuff from someone who doesn't you
should be able to reproduce that effect
create the same effect over and over
again all right now the other group is
using these same lines but now in the
extended sense let's say for example
something like this and I was like long
flowing lines these are very useful as
well so you get the sense of their
longer flowing and generally sometimes
you know until you become comfortable it
may be best that you draw these lines
and pencil and then you know go over it
with with pen don't feel as if you're
you know like you're something fever
hard as if you're you feel the need to
do it in pencil first there's no such
thing if you look at the works and some
of the greatest draftsman they all used
sketches before and then go over it's
nothing wrong with that you know when
it's all said and done people appreciate
the product you're not done where they
actually did it with sketches or not but
for your own benefit it's good that you
practice refining your judgement by
doing it with pen all right so basically
it's just the curved lines taken to
another extent all right so so first we
have the along lines we have these
clusters we have the crosshatch we have
the short curved lines we have the long
curved lines of course we have the
little you have staples I'll use a
larger pen for that so you can actually
see the cut marks so this is a
one and stephon's are very very
important very useful so these lines are
old but you know as I said it's just
good to have variation all right I'll do
another tutorial on value scales you
learn how to blend these values but at
this point I'm just concerned with you
learning and the basic strokes and and
practicing them this may not even be a
stroke percent but step o's are very
very useful
all right then the next ones are the
scribbles the scribbles are useful very
useful as well and it's just random
scribbles pretty much like what little
kids do these are very very useful as
well can be used for hair it can be used
for for shrubs and foliage it can be
used for you know drawing trees and
plants can be used for a variety of
textures you know it's it's the uses are
just you know random scribbles all right
so let the pencil just depend decide you
next uh see what else ever thought about
you can use okay you can use a repeating
pattern so for example you know you
could repeat a pattern like so and
that's it's also that you should
practice so now I'm just repeating these
little small circles see or it could be
you know like scales but again as I said
the idea is that you practice to
maintain consistency so if I were you I
would practice doing this over like a
certain space if for example like an
inch by inch square or something you
know now I'm just like you have a
clusters here of straight lines you can
have clusters of curved ones so for
example like so and you can repeat the
same process with the UM as you have the
clusters of short lines so these are
just little curves and you can make them
zigzags
but again the point is that you maintain
a certain consistency you can use hooks
you know and this is just learning the
basics from here it's just a matter of
using your creativity to employ it how
you wish where you wish doing whatever
you want all right I think those are
pretty much like some of the main just
jokes you you um you use see this is
like a combination of the scribbles and
the flowing lines you know that you have
a sense of randomness but it's really
not you know it's really kind of
consistent in a sense it feels random
but it's really not we're really
repeating a certain pattern here all
right
now the next thing is learning to vary
alright so you're basically creating
variations of these and you can vary
them in a number of ways you can vary
them in terms of size alright so for
example you can have you know small
lines against the low ones you can have
them
and you can vary them in terms of
spacing now and you can do this with
each of these shapes I'm just doing it
just for straight lines so you can vary
them in terms of spacing
all right you can vary them in terms of
layers do like so and you can keep
repeating that also creates a certain
effect and I should I'll show you that
and this is just using one types of line
so you see the amount of variation you
can have with pen and ink it's really
amazing that's one layer I can have
multiple layers over that that's two
layers and it's using the same types of
lines I'm not even using another type of
line okay it's pretty cool and you can
layer them in terms of a direction of
course
but notice I'm keeping everything else
consistent see I'm changing one variable
at a time so of course you're not
limited to do that and I'm just doing
that for clarity so you can see the
different variables clearly but I'm
keeping things other the other variables
consistent so for example the sizes are
consistent only thing I'm changing is
the direction here right I could have
varied the sizes as well as see while
I'm changing the direction so see it's
good to be mindful of those little
variables because it gives you more
control over you know your creativity
and you know so you know you're doing
things deliberately and not just by
chance all right
of course you can also use thickness all
right so for example this is a point
point one this is a point eight all
right
here's a copic this is like a marker and
a 0.05 okay so I'm going to vary the the
thickness here so you have very thin
lines and it will get a little thicker
with the the one see that and then gets
even thicker with this one you could
even take it further
all right so you just this is just an
example of all the variations you have
that you can play around with in your
drawing you can really come up with some
brilliant ideas oh yeah so well that was
