Venetia to remind you there are some
tips on how to create the illusion of
space or enhance the illusion of space
in your drawings especially for drawing
like a landscape or a composition that
involves a group of objects or something
like that these are simple things that
will help you I'm going to share six of
them with you um of course you know the
main system word strategy that people
only use in terms of depicting
two-dimensional space
involves a linear perspective I'm going
to do a series of tutorials on that as
well but this is not using necessarily
any intense linear perspective system is
just how you can just create the
illusion of depth so let's say for
example I have about three three circles
or round things okay
so what I'm going to do is I'm going to
show you an example on this side button
here I'm just going to list the yum the
different strategies just using these
three little round shapes so we have
those three shapes at this moment we
can't tell which is in front of the
other or you know what I'm making like
flat shapes but let's say they're not
flat shapes and then we're like you know
grounded or spherical forms right so at
this point we can't oh so at this point
you can see I'm actually using this to
let the camera focus on this and on my
hand so this one we can't really tell
what's in front of the other or as far
as we know they may all be collinear
right so the first you know strategy of
course or technique is using overlap see
a lot of these things you'll find a
whole crap and I already knew that but
and it really thought about it
so using overlap there's one technique
of showing the illusion of depth because
automatically by looking at this we know
that this is in front this is you know
palm in the middle and this is furthest
away from us then the next one is and
these are not necessarily in order of
importance of just listing as I am
and now is definition whore size
decreasing the sizes so I'm making
things appear to be smaller it also
enhances the illusion of depth because
things that are far away from us gets up
here to get smaller and things that are
close to us appear to be larger than
those further away all right
the next thing to think of is a position
okay when things are in how a realm of
seeing or observing things when things
are lower in the picture plane or in a
frame that we're looking through things
that are lower appear to be closer we
interpret them as being closer to us
some things that are higher so in other
words it appears that this is these
three or aligned so that this is
gradually this is close to us this is in
the middle and this is furthest away
from us so so far we have overlap size
and we have position the lower things
are the the closer they appear to be
right
so this one is position this would is
size variation this one is open up here
is nothing being applied so next one is
detail okay
when things have it's like think of
yourself like in love in a bus or
something and the person sitting right
for you can see all the details in their
hair and I can see all the little things
there even in the chair or whatever but
when people are further away from us we
can't make up all the details of things
that easily see
so details become more sparse when
things tend to move away from us now the
other one is contracts what I mean like
that so say for example this is a solid
black half of this is a solid black half
of it is a solid white see it's black
and white it so happens that when things
are closer to us the contrast and change
the values appear a lot more drastic or
dramatic or significant the more things
are or further things are away from us
the less the contrast is so meaning you
can't see the clear distinction between
this black and there's white anymore
now it looks more like a dark gray and a
light gray see the contrast is
decreasing and the further things are
from us the more they seem to blend into
each other see that I'm showing that the
contrast is decreasing here you see flat
black and white here you see like a dark
gray and lighter gray here is like gray
and gray and if you were to take it
further both would be almost
indistinguishable see that I'm actually
making me seem as if they're going away
from us just by doing that and lastly
and I think you know this is very very
important to us when you're drawing
things it's just increased include a
background line like this see that that
could actually translate to me the the
horizon what doesn't necessarily have to
be that
so it doesn't necessarily have to be the
horizon but it can be any it could be
even you know something like this you
know whatever it is I could mount an
escape or something like that but just
doing that see notice that if it makes
the object reflective actually somewhere
and they're on the ground and that's the
important thing because it helps to give
things a sense of position see these
look like they're floating but once you
put a background line they sit so that's
very important right so there's six
simple strategy that you can apply now
what I'm going to do here I'm going to
draw like um three rocks I'm going to
draw three rocks and apply these six
principles and you see how you know they
create that illusion of depth okay so
let's say we have this draw Rock here
and again he was drawing these rocks
you're going to see how I just start
with you know using basic forms okay
control one seijuro one here I try to
make them a little similar so vacant
okay and then there's going to be a
smaller one that's overlapped here I'm
going to make this little tiny one okay
yeah thing goes through enough to treat
it now we're going to put in the little
horizon or you know background it kind
of makes them sit here well that's how I
describe is it they're sitting
it gives it creates a sense that there's
a ground No
so listen s this just some friend of
this quickly
see and that's it you know so notice
that I you know see I put in a lot of
details here and you know put in a lot
of information that we think we
generally associate with when we see
things that are up close see I'm by
doing that it appears a lot closer than
things are in the background see this
one is is behind it and you can just
make out a little bit of things but not
as much as here and also the contrast so
very I've overlapped see this overlaps
this and I deliberately put this out
there that even though it's not
overlapped by applying the other ones
it's still appears further away see so
by making it smaller and higher I'm
implying that this is furthest and see
they gradually get higher as they they
go further away from us and in the
contract see the contrast see the black
dark and white you can see the strong
contrast here here there's contrast but
not as much in here it's like a specific
old blurry can't really make I was going
on and I put in the background line
which gives it a sense of ground and you
can really sense that you know I can
even make this like a little cliff or
something see if it creates a sense of
grounding see that and then you know
these are just little tricks that's you
know useful to know when because my my
philosophy is it's important to know how
to recreate reality in simple ways that
way you can feel free to draw from the
imagination whenever you choose
