How to Draw Complex Forms Part 2 | Merge simple forms Video Lecture | Develop Drawing Skills: Basics to Expert - Art & Craft

okay so in this tutorial I figured I'd
share with you guys some tips on drawing
complex forms because when you're
drawing it's important to be able to
visualize especially rounded forms in
terms of them being a combination of
complex forms okay so for example when I
say simple forms first of all this first
show you what I mean this is a simple
form perhaps a simplest form there is
alright and I am just putting some lines
to render it to show its volume by
separating the areas of light in the
shell right and of course there are
different ways you can do this you can
you know do it like so
however the you know what type of lines
you want to use to distinguish the areas
of light and shadow to show his volume I
think it's really up to you so this
could be another simple form of cylinder
alright and you know like the block you
know those these are all simple forms
cone you know the egg you know these are
all simple forms now when you're drawing
however what you find is that you won't
see these forms as simple as you see
them here you more likely see them in
partiality like you may not see an
entire sphere you may just see you know
a part of it like like just like a half
of it like this for example
alright or you may see just something
that looks very cold but not an entire
sphere you may see something that has a
conical shape but not the cone so with
pen and ink is a little tricky sometimes
because with with pencil you can shade
in the areas of light and shadow but
with pen you have to try to get a
practice of suggestion okay suggesting
instead of like literally delineating a
shape so for example let's say I'll
start over here let's say I say I have a
do as I say I have a sphere like this
well this spherical form okay Nessa
that's a simple shape and I say I have
another shape right here I have another
one like this and well let's just keep
it at those two for now right and what
I'm gonna do is I'm going to merge these
two forms into this and then it's almost
like um sounds like um like I like paint
picturing it in this one like say for
example you have something like this
okay and they say this is very flexible
material all right this is really
flexible so if I push something like
this like this and I push it up what
will happen is you have something like
like this yeah so let's say this has a
shape like this you know I'm using those
contour lines to show the cross section
and I push it up against it so now what
you're gonna have is something like that
okay so in other words this cross
section now goes like this
it changed because this is pushing up on
the surface so rendering this will be
something I would do something like this
see I'm using these little lines to
indicate the fact that that form is
pushing up see this was what I mean by
so I'm gonna merge as long as like I'm
embedding these small forms let's draw a
little cross sections around them so you
get a feel of what they look like
alright and this of course is like this
okay so let's embed these forms so this
is a simple form to system perform this
is our Sun perform and in combining them
I'll make a complex form so say I have
it like this
so the shape has has changed see that
see so what am I doing here basically
I'm saying this is embedded into this so
how would I show that one by overlap see
that's why it's good to be aware of over
there for neutral forms so what I'm
doing here how would I say this so I
could shade this by like this so I'm
saying you know this form is here and
this one is is right here and it's good
to practice this okay so in other words
if I were lighting this say no I am just
showing you the basic shape so if I were
shining light on this you know the light
the light would be on that side so this
would be the shadow side similarly with
this right so if light were coming from
from this end then you know this would
be in shadow and I have to take into
consideration in these areas see so what
I'm saying is now this entire thing is
affected by these forms so this now is a
complex form and this these simple forms
make this and it's very good practice to
do stuff like this
so you know that's how you can get a
sense of how to shade something say for
example your shading the back or like
the arm or you know something that has
you know all these different muscle
groups underneath the skin
pushing up so you think of it in this
one let's so let's do some more examples
you can get a sense of of what I'm doing
and hopefully you know you can follow
along
so let's say we have a form like this
okay and let's add some more and I'm
gonna add a form like like like
something like oh you know like that all
right and then I have another round one
like that
and I'm gonna merge this into this
bigger form right here okay so we're
gonna combine all of these and now
they're going to make a new form so I
say it looks something like like this so
it looks something like that and you'll
notice that I'm using overlap as a way
to saying where things are okay so I'm
putting this round one this one maybe
right here I'm gonna put this one at the
side over here and and this is so this
is what I'm saying this is the larger
underlying mess just like this is a
large underlying mess and these are the
smaller forms the minor forms on top of
the major form see that so this is the
major form using a minor forms I'm
having this one overlap over like that
see that and then I have this this ball
projecting not like that so that's what
the new form looks like now how would I
render this well I'm picturing these
small forms on top of this larger form
so this one for example let's say either
one you know one is here so it's almost
like a firm that's pushing up on like a
sheet see that you feel it this is the
round for him it's kind of like wedged
into the bottom down here so it's like
wedged in right here
okay and this one is wrapping around so
here it is it's wrapping right here
showing the overlap so you can get a
sense of you know where it is cuz in the
same way I would render it here okay so
this is if this is the side like this
and this is this form this one is right
here and this one is on the other side
see you like that
cuz I'm having it it's like it's it's Oh
this behind here some combining these
forms to meet this form this is really
excellent practice when it comes to
understanding how to render complex
forms that's like imagining forms you
know merged together so in the same way
that's there's you know we can do it
again we can have let's say we have
something like this and then you'll see
how I'll use it in a practical sense
let's say we have another one like this
okay something like that again alright
and let's say we have we're gonna watch
something in we're gonna wedge this
right in here
all right and then we're gonna we're
gonna put a little slow ball gonna wedge
it into here okay
and then we're gonna have no it can have
another one that we can wedge right into
the top here this one so you notice I'm
lighting them all consistently it's all
right
the shadow is always on the left so
these will all create a form that looks
like this is those wedged in to the top
like that right
yeah and just to show you how I would
wedge us form in the side that's away
from us I'll just put this back there so
you see the thigh well this form is like
a thigh it's overlapping this one okay
so you have something like that and then
we can embed this one like that all
right and this one is just wedged into
the side right here
and then this one of course is right
here so there it is
see so it gives you a sense of how you
can combine forms into one and this is
in the back so assassin shadow is that
you're not even seeing it that much okay
and you know this is really good
practice because it really shows you you
know you really get a sense of how to
imagine complex forms but see them as
this so in other words what we're doing
now is going through these simple forms
of the complex forms but what we will be
doing when you draw is to see a complex
one and visualize it as this okay that's
what you'll be doing and then you know
shading them will pretty much be easier
for you because you're shading the whole
thing as if it's you know one you know
you can see a form like that which could
be like a rock right and it has all
these you know small forms attached you
know running through it like that
so if light is coming you know you'll
know that you're treating this and then
this you know and then under here and so
on that's that's how you shade complex
forms it makes it the process a lot
easier for you because you're not
getting lost in all the details but
you're just seeing the simple shapes
that's overlying the complex shape under
the bottom so for example you know you
could have something like this

same thing we're drawing anything else
you know you just try to think of you
know what's the larger mass and picture
the smaller mass on the top of it have
something like that and this could be
you know that's why for example you know
the in the past you know artists used to
study like like big chunks of muscle of
different parts of the body just as a
way of studying how to render form
irregardless of what part of the body it
may represent you know they would just
focus on learning to represent form and
not necessarily pay attention to where
it is it's just representing form
complex form you know and that's the
basic idea
