How to paint cosmos easy fULL TUTORIAL Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

hi there Lindsay here the four who
crafter with another watercolor tutorial
I got a lot of comments on the last one
so I thought I would do another one and
this time I think I'm going to start
with our basic sketch we're gonna I'm
gonna do it a marker so you can see it a
little bit better cuz it's a little more
complex than eggs in the nest we're
going to do some flowers so the first
thing I want you to do and if you want
to watch me sketch it and then pause it
and sketch it yourself that's fine you
can always rewind and and go back and
watch it again if you need to so we're
going to do I think some cosmos or
coreopsis some sort of Daisy like flower
you can of course do this whatever color
you want but I'm starting with basic
shapes just putting in some big ovals
where I want the flowers to be and I'm
gonna give them give them some stems
here and a little butt over here
another little bud over here little
spiky bits underneath now as you can see
I don't put a lot of detail in my
sketches we're going to do that with a
paint so this you want to do with very
very light pencil marks I'm using a
marker so you can see what I'm doing so
then each petal I find it's a lot easier
to put my petals and if I start with
kind of like I think of it as points on
a compass and I do north south east west
and then I can fill in around there you
don't need a lot of detail we're just
giving some like some gays you like
petals that kind of spiky ends like a
cosmos or coreopsis flower does so when
you're looking at something straight on
you'll have more of a circle as the the
brown flowers tipped away from your
going to more of an ellipse and so the
petal is closer to you're going to be
foreshortened or maybe even turned up
with the ones that are out to the side
are going to be longer your brain knows
they're all the same length but when you
look at it your perspective is skewed
now you want to keep this with really
really light petals light lines and you
know just uh
sketch it in if you don't want like
these spiky petals you could just do
smooth round Daisy petals you can
actually just draw the minutes DZ petals
and add the UM add the points with the
paint in a couple minutes all right so
we have between six and eight petals on
each flower and that is our basic sketch
now something else I want to show you
and I'll do this with a pencil and
actually I flip it around for you if you
want to pause this and just kind of
gently sketch that in you're more than
welcome to but I'm going to show you
something called the rule of thirds now
naturally as you get more of an artist
you're going to you're going to
naturally kind of do this now any place
that the that the grid if you do like
three by three grid any place that
intersects you're gonna have a nice
place for a point of interest so any of
these quadrants but I like to also leave
enough white space that the UM the DI
can rest so we kind of have a nice
composition going on here I think so
then again basic basic drawing keep it
simple here don't try to put a lot of
details in it's very easy so here is the
watercolor card I've already sketched
out and what I'm going to do is actually
tape this down to a piece of foam core
I'm going to fold my card and use
painters tape to tape it down and then I
will end up with a really nice white
border on the outside of my of my card
so last time our last tutorial we've had
a rough organic border this time I'm
going to have a really nice neat border
I think it might be a little easier to
kind of stick that stick the tape down
make sure it's even - by looking at the
back of it and then I'll stick it down
to your your paper when you're happy
with that and use painters tape because
it's not going to tear your watercolor
paper as as easily as masking tape well
you can try masking tape if that's all
you have but um this is not that
expensive you can get a roll of it for a
couple bucks at Walmart and it will last
you quite a while or if you have any
left over from painting rooms that will
work good - I don't get the
you know you can buy artists tape which
you know cost $8 a roll or you can get
this for 2 bucks a roll and I think it
works just as well for taping something
down you don't want to tear all right I
think I've got that pretty even and
stick that down for my little scrap of
cardboard or foam core here and again I
will paint upside down so it'll be right
side up for you and instead of using a
water brush I'm actually using
I have a 10 or an 8 round I'm not using
a number 10 round nylon brush they're
quite affordable you can get them in
steps or you can get them individually
and I find this to be my most usable
size and I'm going to zoom in right off
the bat there we go
and we're gonna start with our
background and what I want you to do is
wet your entire paper make sure that you
did press down your tape good before you
wet your paper all right like I said if
you want to if you want watch the
tutorial all the way through
sometimes that's nice to watch all the
way through see how it all turns out and
then you can you know do it right from
the beginning watch it through a couple
times if you need to yeah this is going
to be a quick project and I think you're
going to learn something all right so we
are going to do a wet into wet wash and
I'm going to start with some ultramarine
blue actually going to reach that little
puddle Oaks I don't know how clean the
ultramarine blue is in there
and I'm gonna add a little bit towards
the top just kind of DAB it in I am
avoiding the flowers but I'm not going
to worry about it if it gets in the
flowers we can always lift that out
later and plus these are going to be a
nice vivid pink so um so we don't really
need to worry about them and add a few
drops of pink in there
just let it blend look my papers very
wet this colors gonna blend look want
some SAP green
this is a field of wildflowers we wanna
Gridley when you're painting I think
when your watercolor painting you know
if you just want to go out and take a
picture of something we have cameras for
that here we want to give the essence
and the feeling of these flowers so just
dabbing in some color and I can even mix
a little bit of the ultramarine with my
pinky red you can use alizarin crimson
or rose madder or whatever you have
that's kind of a cool red I'm just going
to add some of that in there too so
these blurry blobs of color in the
background are really going to end up
looking like like flowers that are
further away and out of focus and I
think I will also add a little bit of
warm yellow in places just to kind of
like in the bottom it's going to kind of
make the some colors come forward and
it's also going to introduce the color
we're gonna use for the center of the
flowers I like to get along those colors
and right off the bat another thing to
think about when you're doing watercolor
is that your colors will dry lighter so
if you're freaking out because of how
dark this color is don't worry it's
gonna dry lighter I'm going to go dry
this with my heat tool or a hairdryer or
whatever and we'll be right back and
we're gonna start painting the flowers
so let's try this and come right back
okay we're back our picture is dry and I
want to show you something here if you
look at the edges any place you have a
puddle and and it dries different you
know you've like puddles here and there
to take longer to dry you'll end up with
something called blooms and if you don't
like that if you see a puddle on your
painting then wipe your brush off with a
rag and just set it in the puddle and
soak it up before it dries and you will
have a nice smooth background if you
like the look of blooms and just simply
have really really wet paper with lots
of petals puddles on it and you'll get
blooms so it's complete personal
preference what you like on that I like
blooms I like the spontaneity
spontaneity and spontaneous look of
blooms of our watercolor but not
everybody does so that's how you can
control that alright I love the number
10 round because it's a very versatile
brush and we're
going to do this whole painting with a
number 10 round you can also use your
water brush if that's what you have and
I think you should always try to use
what you have before you run out buy new
supplies because it might work just fine
and don't go crazy buying a zillion new
things because learn what you have learn
to use what you have and then add to it
gradually so that way you'll actually
know and know how to use what you've
purchased and you won't get overwhelmed
all right so I've let this little bud
here and I'm going to put a little bit
of that cadmium yellow in there and then
I'm going to grab some SAP green and I'm
going to add it to the bottom and just
kind of let it touch it up near the
yellow and just let it do its own thing
and I'm also going to drag the stem down
and pull a little spiky shapes off I
hope my hands on the way there all right
and I'm going to call that good and then
I'm going to wall mat it I have my this
color my brush I'm gonna go ahead and
paint in the other stems now I often
will like to turn my um my car to my
painting while I'm working and that's
why I taped it to a foam core board
instead of just taping it directly to my
work surface because I want to make sure
I can move that if I wanted to if you
want to add any other little grasses in
there feel free this is your picture
kind of drag some of that color oak some
of it looks a little dark to me and you
can go over and do the same thing to
this little bud here I really don't
think you can mess this up I mean the
colors are beautiful the paper is
beautiful almost anything you do on it's
going to look nice again I'm working on
the same cards I use the other day and
this is also a really great way to kind
of break the ice before you start a
painting so if you really love this you
can always do it as a painting you can
always make it bigger and get a piece of
more expensive paper if you want to but
these are inexpensive so you don't have
to worry that you're you know wasting
supplies and remember you could always
go in and refine if it looks a little
too loosey-goosey then you know refine
it later
all right so to do the petals I am going
to because I like a really watery
looking watercolor I'm actually going to
go in and I'm going to wet a petal I'm
actually going to wet a few on different
flowers make sure you wet petals that
aren't touching each other we're going
to do what's called the open drip
technique and that is when you um you
drip wet color into a wet area just a
selected wet area on your canvas or on
your paper rather um you don't want to
wet to adjacent areas because then the
colors will just run to each other and
you won't have that that nice effect I
would go all the way out to the edges
with your water because you'll want to
have a little bit of um of control there
so what I'm going to do is actually take
some of that my palette so you can see
it some of that pinky red and I'm gonna
take some my ultramarine blue try to get
it not too watery and mix them together
I want to have a a purple but then I
want to also have the red on its own I'm
gonna pick up some of that red on its
own pick up a little bit of the purple
and then I'm going to go on the tip on
one of those one of those petals and
just kind of let the color glide let it
do its thing so if you just regular
petals you can you can get the spiky
bits out now you can just kind of sketch
that in with your brush
and if you don't love this if this is
just just not your cup of tea you know
what it's just a card you mail it off
you never have to see it again that's
what I love about these projects all
right
so now I'm going to do is take the wet
brush help it kind of blend a little bit
I'm just going to pull you can just let
it blend into its thing but I'm actually
just pulling it towards the center a
little bit to make sure that it does
carry the color cleaning my brush off
and pinching off the extra water just so
that I can have a little variation I
don't want a flat colored puddle I want
there to be some variation so that's why
I'm I'm rinsing off my brush when it
seems like it's getting a little clogged
with color if we were going to paint
really light petals on top of this
background we would have wanted to lift
off some of the color when we after we
painted the background like a paper
towel but we didn't need to do that this
time around and you can smooth out any
edges that are rough and if you want to
darken some of those petals if there's a
little too blah you can just add in a
drop of the purpley color that we mixed
and since a lot of those color those
petals are kind of spaced apart I'm
going to go in and color the other ones
while I'm at it and this stage is also
going to take a while to dry once we M
once it's they're all painted in because
we have very wet paint here I think I
can even sneak in there and do this one
because there's quite a bit of space
between those petals
and sometimes we'll go in with all
purples and I'll go in I'm sitting what
that one first and then I'll go in with
my a lighter color all right a little
bit of that pink
now the neat thing about watercolor is
that the paint will really just wants to
flow wherever you put the water it
doesn't really want to go on the dry
paper so you can really control where
your paint goes that way and just for
time sake I'm actually going to go in
there and just kind of get these last
couple petals on and try not to let them
touch the other ones but if they do no
big deal you can take your time what I
usually do is I'll have like a few
paintings going at once so that way I
can um I can wall I've pedals drawing on
one painting I can be working on another
painting so I'll have like five or six
of these going at the same time and just
kind of skip around and work on them bit
by bit so that's something you might
want to do I'm looking at the monitor
actually this is kind of pretty it's
very loosey-goosey which you know may or
may not be your cup of tea but it's even
if it isn't try it because it's fun and
it's a great warm-up and you know don't
put pressure on yourself to create a
masterpiece
let it be fun you know remember what it
was like to paint when you were a child
and you know you didn't care how it
turned out you just liked playing in the
paint that's how it should be that's how
painting should be yes it can be
difficult to develop your craft and yes
you have to be dedicated and you know if
you want to become a great master or
something but if you just want to just
want to paint for fun and have fun paint
nobody even has to see it if you don't
like the way it looks when you're done
just um just enjoy it nothing nobody
says the prod the product has to be good
it's the process you should enjoy
alright I'm going to dry this and then
we'll come back and I'll paint the
center so I'll keep working on your
petals and we'll be back in a moment to
do the center's okay I've dried up those
uh those petals we're gonna grab a
little CAD yellow and that's your warm
yellow or new gamboge whatever you have
that's more of a warm yellow I'm just
gonna dab in my centers here
and I'm at it I am going to grab a
little SAP green each time you see me
reach over I'm just taking I've rinsing
my brush off and I'm pinching off the
excess water because I just want it damp
but I don't want it um I don't want it
sopping wet and generally as I work my
brush gets dry or my paint gets drier so
drier paint drier paper more details so
I start off loosey-goosey wet paint wet
paper and everything gets drier as I go
so I'm just gonna throw in some details
on this bud and you know if this freaks
you out if you don't like having such a
large brush go ahead and switch to a
smaller brush if you want to it's up to
you watch this I've put in some pretty
wide lines I could leave that like that
but I'm actually gonna take my damp
brush and just touch it to the edge and
blend it over actually haven't even used
a rag once to wipe my brush up on mainly
because I left my rag on the other side
of the room you know I hope you want to
dry if you just want to dab your your
brush on a rag you go for it a lot of
times I'm I don't paint in nature and I
forget stuff you know I'm wiping my
brush my jeans and yeah I'm not gonna go
all the way back home just to get a
paper towel
don't these little spy keys at the
bottom gonna play it there and then I
can add any sort of details that I want
to on my flowers and I'm going to use a
mix of a fairly concentrated mix of and
see that they're of ultramarine blue and
that a pinkish red alizarin crimson and
I'm just going to go in there and try
not try not to get into the yellow
because that's going to turn into Brown
that purpley color will turn into Brown
if it touches the yellow you can take
more time with this you know this is
just a demonstration I just want to show
you a few ideas but absolutely take time
with this if you want you can
and spend hours I went spent too long
because you don't want to fuss with it
but you know have fun with it this is
it's for fun it's just for fun you know
if you want to sell these in a craft
fair go ahead I don't mind one bit um if
you want to share what I've taught you
with somebody else you want to teach
something else how to do this you go for
it
I do not hoard what I know as you I
don't know much but if I'm sharing it
really folks there we go
so you know add any details you want I
like to add a little spatter to this and
