sketches and today I'm going to discuss
a fundamental in drawing how to draw a
straight line if we refer to this
interesting book by Matthew Frederic the
first thing that he talked about was how
to draw a line this is the absolute most
fundamental thing that an architect or
architecture student or an artist need
to know and I was actually taught and
exercise and how to achieve a straight
line and I thought it'll be great if I
share if you guys so this is meant to be
a really short and sweet video where I
show you one exercise on how to draw a
straight line so let's get started now
if you guys are aware we often do
monthly challenges and I would give
comments in our entries of the quality
of the drawing and I often mention this
thing called line quality or what do I
exactly mean by line quality line
quality means literally exactly that the
quality of the line for example this
drawing has a variety of line qualities
there are rough texture ones thin thick
and also straight what I want to focus
on is actually the straight lines the
quality of straight lines because it is
often a trope to be able to draw a
straight line freehand and this exercise
that I'm going to show you will help to
train the muscles in your hand to try
and draw straight so let's try it this
exercise is so deceptively simple you
start up by drawing a dot hope you guys
can see that
and then you mark out a destination for
a line okay I'm gonna mark one there
actually you can mark it wherever here
here here
there okay so the main objective of the
exercise is to connect this dot with a
mark and the way that you do it is that
you place your pen on top of the dot and
this is the most important part guys
your eye must be looking at the
destination so right now my hand is on
this dot but my eye is looking at this
mark right here and the way that you
tackle this is you're actually pushing
the pen towards your eye like so okay
that's not very straight right here but
that's alright because this is an
example and the more you do the more you
will improve so again my eyes right here
and
so long as you keep practicing this
daily you'll be able to develop a kind
of rigor and discipline in the muscles
of your fingers so that you're able to
draw pretty much a rough textured but
pretty much straight line something like
that
you
so referring back to this example the
reason why we do this practice again and
again again and again again and again is
to develop the confidence and Stroke to
go from this to this okay so I hope you
