DRAWING EYES PART 2! Coloured Pencil Drawing Tutorial Episode 7 Video Lecture | Become an Artist: Colored Pencil Portrait Drawing Tutorial - Art & Craft

hello everybody welcome back to my
channel so in today's video I'm doing
part two of my drawing realistic eyes in
colored pencil tutorials and in last
week's episode I focused on drawing
child's eyes and also female eyes so I
really recommend that you check that one
out once you've finished watching this
video so for this week's episode I'm
focusing on drawing male eyes and also
older people's eyes so like before I'm
not going to be able to talk about every
color that I'm using at every point but
again I will list them all in the
description below so if you want to know
all the clothes I use for each of the
eyes then check the description below
because they will all be in there next
week I'm going to focus on drawing noses
in color pencil and I'm going to set it
out very much like I did with these two
episodes so if you're new to my channel

with this tutorial so firstly I'm
starting with the male eyes and the
first thing that I did was I used a dark
brown color pencil called sepia and for
this tutorial I'm using all Karen -
limited color pencils when a few fellow
castell polychromos in there as well so
a till out sepia and I use that to
outline the main sketch that I already
drew and then I went in with the black
color pencil and I filled in the pupil
and I started doing some shading in the
iris and the strokes that I used the
iris for more lines rather than circular
motions so once I did that I started
working on the eyelid and I started
coloring this in using some dark Browns
for more unders and also some burned
otice and then I start to work on the
skin around the eyes and the first thing
I did was I applied a layer of burnt
sienna tempest m and then I went to in
with the war embers on the inner corners
of the eyes where the skin starts to
meet the eyebrows and I used two more
Amber's F and I also then started to
blend this all together and add a bit
more pressure with the burnt ocher 10%
so the papers I'm working on for this
tutorial is the Strathmore 500 series
Bristol plate finish paper and it's
really really smooth which means that it
doesn't have loads loads of tooth so you
have to be really careful with the
layers that you're applying because it
is very very forgiving
so I built up my first layers really
lightly and then I only start to apply
pressure on sandpaper once I know that
I'm getting into my final layers and I'm
happy with the colors that I've got so
far so again I'm just building up that
skin around the eyes and if I want to
light in any areas then I tend to use
the white so when I'm using kind of
pencils to try and get a smooth finish I
tend to use circular motions rather than
lines because this gives a more smooth
finish because you don't have start and
stop points

now moving off the whites of the eyes
and students I use a lot of gray colors
because the whites of the eyes even
though they called whites the eyes they
are not just white there's a lot of gray
tones and a lot of shadow cast on them
by the upper eyelid and also the
eyelashes so to make it look spherical
you've got to use a lot of Gray's so I
will tell you all the Grays that I use
in the description below but I tend to
choose a dark grey towards the top where
there's more shadow cast and then
lighter grays and whites on the bottom
of the white the eye and then towards
the inner corner of the eye I use that
skin color
so the burn Sienna's to graduate into
the white of the eye so it wasn't so
harsh and it looks a bit more natural
because there may be some pink tones in
the white of the eye depending on your
reference photos to make sure you look
at your reference photo really closely
so the colors that I tend to choose the
tear ducts and also the water line words
burn siennas and then I used some white
and some light to burn stannis so moving
onto the iris and the first thing that I
did before was I lined it with the black
and I started to indicate where the
shadows and the highlights would be so
for the iris I used a lot of cool greys
and I also used a dark blue and then
where I wanted to highlight them a bit
more shine to make it look a bit more
watery and add some difference in
variation with the iris I used the white
color pencil to bring out some
highlights and some different flecks of
colors and I also use that to add some
shine and fill in the highlight

so now moving on to the eyebrow and the
first thing I do is I've blocking the
shape by using that sepia color and it's
really important when you draw an eye
brows that you make it look like the
hairs are growing out from the skin
rather than a shape that's just been
plump onto the skin itself so it's
really important that you use line
strokes when you're drawing eyebrow and
it's really important that you look
closely to your reference photo to see
the direction that the hairs are growing
because they don't just go in all
different directions they will follow a
flow and a certain direction and it's
really important to make the eyebrow
look realistic that you add some
variation to it so the hair might just
be one color they'll be shine and shadow
test in certain areas so what I like to
do is I like to use the sepia to create
a foundation base and I put in some
really dark hairs we're using the black
fiber castell polychromos
and I use my little knife that I used
last week and I use that to pull out
some highlights strands and this adds a
lot of depth because you've got three
different tones going on in the eyebrow
I also use that same brown color and a
bit of black at the roots to do the
eyelashes so with lambs eyelashes you
don't want them to look too black
otherwise they look very unnatural and
it will look like the man is wearing a
lot of makeup so when you're doing males
or children's eyes then try to use
Browns and only black at the roots
rather than using black from the root to
the tip because this should only really
be done with females if they're wearing
makeup
otherwise it won't look natural or
realistic I also use that little blade
to pull out some highlights in the
eyelashes and stuff because on the
reference photo there was some light
cast on some of the eyelashes which made
them look a lot brighter
so displayed is really good to come out
details adding little creases putting
out heads and I really love it to do
hair in particular because it's really
good to create highlighted strands and
it just pulls the color from the surface
so it works really well with wax based
pencils

so the last thing that I like to do is I
like to go in with the white gel pen but
this is completely optional and you can
also use an electric eraser for this
part if you want it all depends on your
personal preference so I use the white
gel pen to block in where I want the
highlights so those are some highlights
to transcend the eyebrows and there's
some highlights on the iris itself and
around the eye so I looking where they
are and sometimes the gel pen comes out
too thick and I just want a really thin
strand of hair so why do then if I go in
with that blade and I use up to scoop
the exact shape that I want with that
gel pen and get rid of any unnecessary
bits and then once I've done that and
just uninsulated details you know
perfecting their colors getting them to
look as close to the reference photo as
possible but up if the male I really

so moving on to the older person's eyes
and on people have a lot of new skin a
lot of little creases and wrinkles going
on and also they don't have many
eyebrows left you'll see that a lot of
them with the male's they tend to just
have a few very sparse eyebrows and they
can get these white eyebrows as well so
the first thing that I did is very much
like before I started out with that
sepia color to line the sketch ideas so
around the skin and then I use the black
color to fill in the pupil and to start
sketching where the shadows are in the
iris and again I was using line strokes
for the iris rather than circular
motions and then I start to work on the
skin around the eye so I start to
determine where the main creases are and
the wrinkles and really block in where
the wrinkles are in this eye and I'm
doing all of this with the sepia but any
dark brown would work also this man skin
was a lot darker than the other three
ideas so I'm using a lot of brown tones
and some more of the dark gradations of
the burnt sienna and burnt okay so then
I started to work on the white CI and
the inner corner of the eye so if the
inner corner I'm using the burnt sienna
and then with the whites of the eyes
again I'm using a lot of dark Gray's and
also because his eyes weren't very
widely opened there was a lot more dark
grays and especially on the left side so
the left eye there's a lot more shadow
cast on to that side of the face so I
used a lot of dark grays but I also use
a bit of white to pull out wherever
there was any highlights in the white of
the eye so move on to the iris itself I
used a lot of the same colors that I did
for the iris for the man's eye because
they are both blue they're the only
difference is I used a lot more gray
tones and back for the old man's eye
because it was casting more shallow so
further moving onto the skin around the
eye and the first thing that I did was I
used a burnt sienna 50% and I use this
to add a foundation layer across the
skin and
I also use some burns over 50% and I use
this to add another layer around the
skin and then I'm just looking at the
reference photos to where there's more
shadowed regions I tend to use the wall
others and the sepia and then where it's
more highlighted I might use lighter
gradations of the bird okay and don't
see Anna and I'll also use white to
pullouts where the highlighted regions
are

so even though the Munsters have many
eyebrows there was still the eyebrow
bone where the eyebrows should go so
this was darker and I did this with a
lot of brands so again I'm just using
those same colors adding them where I
think they need to go depending on the
reference photo so this isn't like a
recipe it will all be different
depending on your reference photo so the
main thing is learning what colors you
might want to use and then applying them
and seeing what works for you but an
important thing to remember is if you
want to smooth outcomes use lie layers
at the start use circular motions and
then as you build more and more layers
apply more pressure to blend the wax
pigment together

we're on the really dark shadows I tend
to use the sava Castile dark Browns are
north of the pebble Castel black because
this adds a really nice layer on top of
the wax those pencils once you can't
apply any more wax to the paper so
they'll get to a point where you can't
apply my wife's to paper and at that
point it's nice to switch over to the
table castell polychromos to glaze over
dark colors if you need to so then I go
in with the blade again and I use this
to pull out details especially with the
old man's eyes it was really good at
pulling out creases and wrinkles and
wherever there's a bit more of this on
your skin so to pull out the highlighted
regions to make it really looks like
those areas with 3-dimensional rather
than looking flat and then once I'd use
that blade I then use the white color
pencil just to pull out some really
really bright highlights because you've
removed the pigment you can then add the
white color pencil to those areas

so now I'm living on doing the
highlights with the white gel pen and
again I'm using it for the highlights in
the iris and also some of the highlights
around the skin and on the tear ducts
and also the waterline and then I'm also
using a white gel pen to do the eyebrow
hairs that were really really white in
the reference photo so I only can use
the white gel pen for hairs that are
really white and really bright and then
I use the blade to kind of chisel out
the areas that I didn't want because the
white gel pen kind of gave the same
thickness across the whole of the line
that you drew but if it's an eyebrow
hair it tends to get thinner at the end
so I use this to create more of a
gradation and thickness with the blade
