How to Draw Realistic Hair with Coloured Pencils | Drawing tutorial- Step by Step Video Lecture | Become an Artist: Colored Pencil Portrait Drawing Tutorial - Art & Craft

hello everyone and welcome back to my
channel so in today's video I'm going to
be showing you guys how I drew this hair
using colored pencils also for you guys
over on patreon I have got the 3 hour

anyway let's get on with the tutorial so
the materials that I'm using are the
Karen - luminance
color pencils and I will leave all of
the materials that I'm using throughout
this tutorial in the description below
in case you want to check them out so
the first thing that I like to do when
I'm drawing hair is I like to block in
the darkest shadows of the hair and also
block in individual clumps and locks of
the hair so to do this with my hair
color I am using the sepia Karen -
luminance colored pencil and what I
recommend is just picking the darkest
color of your hair color that you're
drawing and use that for the shadowed
tone so I just used that to block out
all the individual shadows and just
block in the clumps of hair I use lines
rather than circular motions and I go in
direction at the hairs going in next I'm
adding a base tone using the raw under
10% and I just applied that everywhere
all over the hair as base toned and then
I'm going in with the wall under 50%
which is the slightly dark version and
I'm just using that on the mid-tones and
a bit on the shadows to integrate from
the shadows into where the highlights
are and you can see that I'm always
using lines that going in the direction
that the hair is flowing in and I am
trying to work with the clumps of hair
rather than just doing lots of
individual random strands of hair it's
important to try and build up freebee
masses of hair rather than just lots of
individual strands of hair so now I'm
also just going in with the raw umber
which is the darkest of the raw numbers
and again I'm using that mainly on the
shadowed areas and I like to vary my
pencil strokes to really kind of
integrate the shadows into the mid-tones
and the highlights just so that there's
not a harsh stop start points where all
of their shadows
and so I really like to spread it in the
pencil strokes to give it more of a
natural look as well and now I'm going
in and I'm glazing over the colors of
the hair to make it more of an accurate
color so I'm using the brown ochre for
this and I really like this on dark
blonde hair and also just on brown hair
I think it's a really nice tone for the
hair and it gives it a nice natural look
so I'm just laying that all over the
hair and when I'm drawing hair I like to
build up in lots of really light layers
so I don't go with a lot of pressure at
the start I use quite light pressure and
I just slowly build up the pressure as I
apply more and more layers because if
you apply too much pressure on the color
pencil at the start then it will burnish
the paper and it means they flattens out
too for the paper so that it won't
accept any more of the color pencil so
now what I'm doing is I'm using the
burnt sienna and this has got more of a
reddish tone to it and again I'm just
using this on the shadows and feathering
it into the mid-tone areas and
highlights as well and it just adds a
bit more richness to the hair and a bit
more depth within the color so I'm
building a bit more pressure up on the
shadowed areas just to get them a bit
more saturated and to build at the
contrast with the realism is really
important that you have a good contrast
to make your drawing pop so this means
that you need some shadows so darkest
areas and then also some highlighted
areas as well just to give a nice
contrast and makes you a drawing pop if
your reference photo doesn't have much
of a high contrast then you can always
hype up the contrast a bit before you
start your piece so now I'm going in
with some of the lighter brown okis as
well and I'm using this to stop and out
the grain so I'm using it to smooth all
of the layers of pencil together and get
a really smooth finish and I'm also
doing the same with the raw unders on
the shadowed areas so as I start to
build up more and more layers I like to
start to soften out the pencil strokes
get rid of the graininess because if you
have a grainy looking drawing then it
won't look as realistic as if you would
smooth and blend all of those pencil
strokes
I'm also now using some of the white
color pencil on the highlighted areas
just to make them pop a bit more and
also to blend them out a bit and then
I'm just individually going in with a
lot of different colors to help get the
color right and so I'm using a bit of
but 10% now to blend some of the hair
into where the skin is so tickly around
that hairline area I just want to make
that as natural a transition as possible
so it's really important to add little
hairs around the hairline and just
really softly transition that hair into
the hairline so it's not such a uniform
shape and you don't want the skin to
just end and the hair to begin you want
it to be more of a soft transition with
realism there's really rarely very any
harsh lines it's all about soft
transitions and soft shadows and shading
so now I'm applying a bit more pressure
on that white color pencil just to make
it stand out a bit more and just to get
some of those really bright highlights
in so this adds a nicer contrast and I'm
just perfecting the hair won't meets the
skin
so add in this white also just helps
moving everything out a bit and you can
see that I haven't drew in every single
strand of hair I've done it in terms of
clumps and locks of hair and it does
look realistic you don't need to draw
every clump of hair and every strand of
hair just to make it look realistic
because if you look at the reference
photo you can't see all these strands of
hairs you can just see different shapes
okay so now one of my favorite things to
do with hair is to use this little
crafting knife and if you go on Amazon
or go on my link it's called an exact
and exacto knife and what I do is I just
use this to pull up some of the wax from
the paper so basically it scrapes off
some of the wax pigment off the paper
and it reveals lighter layers underneath
so this is really good to get flyaway
hairs or just to add a bit more detail
within the concert hair just to add a
bit more singular strands within the
compass of hair and just to really break
up all the different clumps so I like
doing that at the end also if you lift
up some of the color you can then go in
with your white pencil and brighten
certain areas up as well so that is that
area done I like to work on hair in
terms of different areas I don't like to
do it all in one go I like to work on a
certain section at time otherwise if
you're trying to cover the whole head of
hair
then you can start to rush because it
will take forever if you're trying to do
and the different steps across all of
the hair so you have more of a tendency
to rush that way whereas if you focus on
small areas at a time then you're much
more likely to pay more attention and
really focus on that area and get it to
the best of its ability so again I'm
doing the exact same process I added in
the step yet so the shadowed colors
first I was going in lines blown with
direction of the hairs going in I then
added some more numbers and some base
colors so just look at your reference
photo and look at what the base colors
are for your particular colored hair if
you're unsure what colors to use then
just swatch some colors on a piece of
paper and then just run it along where
the hair is and see which colors best
match it doesn't have to be a perfect
much the importance is that you have
some contrasting colors so some shadowed
and highlights hid colors and then I've
just gone in and glazed lots of
different colors over the top I then
added some highlights with the white
color pencil
and one tip is always make sure that
your pencils are really really sharp
especially if you want to get lots of
details with the hair and now I'm just
going in with that crafting knife and
I'm just making sure that I'm putting up
some little flyaway hairs just to break
up all of the different clumps of hair
you can also go over to different areas
that you've already done so like I just
went over to the area that I did first
and I darkened it up a bit because you
want to make sure that the different
areas really complement each other and
come together so I do recommend using
the similar sort of colors across the
hair even if you're working in sections
so that you can't tell where you have
done different areas of hair so finally
I'm just working on the bottom section
of the hair again I'm just layering in
that brown color so I pick this color
because it's the darkest color on the
reference photo and why I like to block
in the shadows first is because it also
helps just bring that sketch so that
initial sketch that we did with pencil
to life because as you start to add the
color pencils you will lose that sketch
so I want to make sure that I'm adding
those dark colors in so that we can
still see our sketch layering over those
raw numbers and even certain areas a bit
more free of colour pencil because those
are the highlighted areas and I'm really
making sure that I'm using light
pressure I don't want to damage the
tooth of the paper and then I'm glazing
some of those brown okras over the top
and as you can see I've made it look so
that you can't tell where I've done this
bottom area and then where I stopped
doing that other area before so they're
nicely transition into each other really
really well so I'm applying a bit more
pressure in certain areas with the brown
ochre where it's a bit more saturated
and I'm also trying to integrate the
hair into the neck as well so it's
important that you look at these areas
where the hair meets the skin and
different parts of the body and really
try and softly transition between those
certain areas so now I'm adding a bit
more of the sepia just to hype up the
contrast a bit more you want to keep
checking to see if your contrast level
is correct or if you need to darken up
the shadows and bump the highlights a
bit more just keep looking around the
reference photo and you'll notice things
that you didn't notice before so I'm
adding a bit of the white pencil just to
bring out the highlights I like to leave
the highlights until last because you
want to keep things brighten if you do
the highlights and then you try and
darken colors then it might smudge them
as the darkness over your highlights so
I just like to leave it to the end so
now you can see me use that knife again
and you can see how it really loosens up
all of the individual clumps of hairs by
just adding flyaway hairs that kind of
transition and go over the different
clumps of hair anyway guys that's it for
