DRAWING NOSES PART 2! Coloured Pencil Drawing Tutorial Episode 9 Video Lecture | Become an Artist: Colored Pencil Portrait Drawing Tutorial - Art & Craft

hello everybody welcome back to my
channel so today is part two my drawing
noses and colored pencil tutorials so
last week was part one and for that
video I drew a baby's nose and also a
female nose so if you missed that make
sure you check out that video after this
one so this week I'm drawing a male nose
and also an older person's nose and I'm
doing these with a darker skin tone and
warmer skin tones then I did last weeks
over the last two noses I did the more
pale so if you want to know how to do
more pale skin tones then definitely
check out that video so the first thing
I did with the male nose is I'm going in
with the sepia and I'm using this to
establish where the shadows are so for
these noses I'm using the can -
luminance color pencils and these works
similarly to the prismacolor so if you
have pretzel colors instead then it will
work very similar to techniques that I'm
doing here so I'm using this up here to
establish the shadows and I'm doing this
with very very light pressure because I
really don't want to damage the tube of
the paper as they have a lot more layers
to put on so I'm using very light
circular motions and I'm doing this as
smoothly as possible and then also for
the shadows I'm using lighter gradations
of sepia so the sepia 50% for example to
add in more of those shadowed regions
where it's lighter
I now goin over with a burnt sienna
$0.50 I'm using this on the shadowed
regions as well and I'm using this more
to blend all the colors together and to
get more of an established layer down
and then I'm going in with the bird
Sienna 50% which is the darker burnt
sienna and I'm using this on the more
shadowed regions of the nose so closer
to the nostrils and I'm using this with
a bit more pressure so that it all
blends out smoothly okay so once I did
that I'm going in with the bird okay and
I'm using this to adding some more of
the tone so it's really important that
you look at your reference photo and
establish whether there's warm
undertones or cool undertones so warm
undertones you can use a lot of bird o
curve in there as this has a more
orangey and warm golden color or if it's
a cooler undertone you can use more
burnt sienna and white colors to get
that more pinkish and olive looking
undertone rather than having a really
original King tone and now I really like
using the bird okay temp so to blend it
all together and get a really smooth
finish look the only place that I won't
apply the bird ochre is where I want the
highlight so I'll apply a very light
layer but I won't apply much pressure
because I'll do this for the white color
pencil but I like to have a bit of burnt
ocher there just so that when I add that
white as a pencil it's more of a
seamless transition into the colors next
to it

now I'm using the burnt sienna on the
nostrils as well because this helps add
depth to the nostrils rather than just
using a brown and like last week on same
with the nostrils I try to use a dark
brown rather than a black so avoid black
as much as possible if you can obviously
it depends on your reference photo but
if you do want to use black then try and
lay it other clothes over the top of it
so that it doesn't look so flat so for
example you can a racer the Browns or
the bent Sanders just add a bit more
richness back into it and I'm also using
adverb sienna on other parts of the nose
to really hype up the contrast and add
depth to the shadows so very much like I
was saying last week if you get the
colors all cracks the nose still won't
look realistic if you don't have
contrast if your contrast isn't good so
this is the difference between your
highlights and your shadows so to make
it look realistic and pop out the page
you need to get your highlights as
bright as they are and the shadows as
dark as they are to make it look very
free dimensional another set of colors
that is really good for shadowed regions
like I'm using now is the walk embers so
this has more of a greenish undertone so
it's really good for the skin because a
lot of our skin has greenish undertones
or bluer undertones and this makes it
look more realistic so the more colors
you glaze over the top of each other the
more it's going to look realistic
because skin isn't just made up of a few
colors you need to add in lots of the
different variations to make it look
realistic

so these nose is that I'm using the car
- three minutes colored pencils and I'm
doing this on the stratton all bristol
plate surface which 500 series and this
is a really really smooth paper which
means it's so easy to get smooth looking
results it would be a lot harder if you
use the paper with more - for more
texture so if you want to do portraits
and your aim is to get a smooth looking
skin then I really recommend something
that is very smooth and has little tooth
but you still need enough to apply
enough layers but you don't want
something that has a lot of lot of
texture so now I'm just going in with
all the different colors and getting it
as close to the reference photo as
possible so it will depend on your
reference photo as a rule of thumb you
can use a lot of beds if it's warm
golden undertones or you can use burn
Siena's if it's more cooler undertones
and I also like use Mewar others for
shadowed regions but if you're unsure on
what color you want to use for a certain
area just go into something like
Photoshop or paints and use the
eyedropper tool on that certain parts
and it will pick out the color that you
need because it's only hard to find and
figure out what color you need if you
look at the whole nose as a whole but if
you use that eyedropper tool and select
the color it is much easier to see what
color you are kind of heading towards so
now I'm just using that white can - can
the pencil to add in those highlights
and I like to use the size of the pencil
a lot because this helps to glaze the
clear over the top without damaging all
the smooth layers underneath that you
created so using color pencil is a very
very slow process is something that you
can only do if you have a lot of
patience and you're really winning
stick with it because you need to layer
and layer and layer and this is very
time-consuming so it's not something
that you can do really quickly and if
you do it very quickly then you're not
going to get good results and it will
just look rush so if you don't have the
time to commit to it then probably try
and find a different medium because it
is a very slow working medium slower
than anything else I've worked in before
however a good thing about colored
pencil is that there's no drying time so
example with oil painting you have to
wait for your layers to dry but with
this you can just keep working

okay so moving on to the next notes this
is the older persons nose and again I
start off by laying out the nostrils
using that sepia tone and I'm using this
to also lay down where the shadows are
so with an older person's nose normally
they have a lot more texture in their
nose things aren't as smooth or they
could be discoloration of the skin and
little patches at different colors and
there also can be bumps and lots of
different things going on
so I'm going in with a sepia and I'm
using the side of it to establish the
shadowed regions and also rest some of
that different color pigmentation went
on

and then I'll go in with the Bernstein
attempt them and I'm using this just to
fill in where all those shadowed regions
are and get a nice base layer down and
again I'm not applying too much pressure
I'm just applying enough pressure to get
the color down onto the paper

ok so now I'm going over to top it out
with the birds okay
and this nose was very warm undertones
nose so I used that burnt sienna to
create that foundation base and then I'm
going over the top of it with those
warmer tones so there's bird ochres and
those darker burn stannis
and as you can see already because he
had more texture in his nose I wasn't
worried so much about getting it
perfectly smooth because I knew having a
bit of texture would work in my favor to
make it look realistic because if it
looks too smooth then it won't look at
realistic because it's not meant to be
smooth

and now I'm going in without sepia to
add in more of those discolored dark
patches on tooth skin and I blend over
the top of that with the bird oka so
blending over the top of them blends
them out and softens them out but
without getting rid of that pigment so
you can still see that there's changes
in the skin tone in those areas but it's
not so harshly fancy all the edges of
where I've tied the color pencil so now
I'm using the burnt sienna and I'm using
this in the shadowed regions just to add
in some more richness and some more
depth and as you can see as well as
using those soft circular motions to get
a generalised smooth foundation base I'm
also using them very roughly very
passionately to get in that texture and
I'm just blending out what needs to be
blended with the budge okay pumps them
and I'm using this with a bit more
pressure in certain places to really
pull out some highlights and some light
pigmentation in the skin so at the
moment the contrast is not where I need
it to be so the shadows aren't dark
enough and there's not any highlights so
the thing that I need to do next is go
in and add those highlights and darken
up sort of the shadowed regions so for
example when the nostrils are because
the nostrils don't look any darker than
the areas surrounding it but first I'm
just applying where all of those
different patches and textures of
different skin tones are and then I'll
go in and fix out the highlights

so now going in with the white heron -
colored pencil and I'm using this to add
in a highlights and you can see very
quickly once I've done that it really
helps to make the nose pop and it helps
in your head to make it look
three-dimensional because now you have
the shadows the foundation base so the
mid-tones and now you've added the
highlights so you've got those free
layers to make it look really good
another thing that's really good to use
to get texture is using a crafting knife
and I use this just on the side and this
with work and this is really good with
wax based color pencil because it lists
the color pencil off that paper and
reveals the Lay's underneath so you can
use up to lighten areas or bring it back
to white and so this is an amazing tool
to use if you're drawing hair and you
want flyaway strands and stuff like that
it's a really really good tool and I use
it so much in my color pencil drawings
so now I'm just fixing the colors adding
more highlights when there needs to be
highlights and then fix in the shadows
and then I'll be done with this one
