Snaps and Drawing Aides Video Lecture - TurboCAD A Complete Course - Design

in this video we will be going over
snaps and other drawing aids snaps force
mouse clicks to specific coordinates to
ensure precise placement of geometry
synapse can be accessed in a variety of
ways first let's take a look at the
drawing aids dialog you can bring this
up by right-clicking the snap icon below
the drawing area notice how most of the
options are grayed out this is because
no Snap is checked if I uncheck no snap
the snaps would be active many of the
options in this menu have to do with
drawing aids which give you visual cues
to let you know what's going on
the magnetic point is a magenta diamond
that shows where the active snap will
place the next mouse click auxilary
lines are a dashed line of the same
color which show the extended ortho
apparent intersection and other drawing
aids we will see both of these at
different times in the video so for now
just be sure that they are both checked
however to make our demos less visually
confusing we will uncheck both extended
ortho and apparent intersection for the
time being use mouse position if
required snaps are not found should also
be checked if this is unchecked mouse
clicks will fail unless you are snapping
to the grid or an entity if you are
constantly receiving warnings or dings
this may be unchecked another thing to
pay attention to when the drawing aids
dialog is the snap priority snap
priority is useful when more than one
snap is found in the snap aperture the
snap aperture is an area around the
cursor which highlights the active snaps
so for example if both a grid and vertex
snap fell within the aperture the vertex
snap would be used since it has a higher
priority in aperture limits the use of a
snap to the actual snap point being in
the aperture this is useful when a snap
that snaps to a point relative to the
geometry like Center is also active
let's close the drawing aids dialog by
clicking ok snaps can also be found in
the standard toolbar let's pull the
flyout off so we can see which snaps are
active at all times now that we know how
to activate the snaps we need something
to snap to
I will go ahead and open a drawing file
which can be downloaded by following the
URL in this video's description
I have organized this file in two
different views which can be accessed
from the design director let's start
with vertex leaving vertex and show
magnetic point active I will uncheck all
the other snaps along with no snap the
vertex snap will snap to the end points
of entities and the connections of line
segments for example we can finish the
hexagon by choosing the line tool and
snapping to the two end points to
construct our line snaps can be used for
other operations as well if I select one
of the rectangles I can relocate the
reference point by tapping the D key on
the keyboard then snapping it to one of
the corners I can now grab the reference
point and move the rectangle snapping to
a corner of the other rectangle
midpoint snaps to the middle of a line
segment try snapping to the different
midpoints of this polygon
notice how the aperture does not need to
be near the midpoint of the line
similar to midpoint / snaps to an entity
as if it were divided into multiple
segments by default
/ is set to 3 we can change this in the
drawing aids dialog
if I change it to 6 then the snap
creates six segments which can be
snapped to
Center snaps to the center of a circle
or an ellipse to show how in aperture
works I will go over quadrant at this
time as well notice when I hover over
the entities where the Snap is activated
if I hover over the quadrant then the
quadrant snap is activated however if I
hover over any other part of the entity
Center is activated
the extents of an entity is marked by
the bounding box when selected with the
reference point defaulting to its center
center of extents allows you to snap to
this point
like all of our
they're snaps this can be used on 3d
entities as well
similar to vertex intersection snaps to
the intersections of different entities
but ignores endpoints
you
the grid snap snaps to the grid whether
it is visible or not since the grid snap
usually has a lower priority than the
other snaps it may be ignored when other
snaps are active
nearest on graphic snaps to any part of
an entity
you
nearest on Fassett snaps to the face of
a 3d entity
you
tangent creates an auxilary line tangent
to the last point clicked in an entity
within the snap aperture a snap point
will appear at the intersection of the
auxilary line and this entity
notice how the last point clicked is
marked with a magenta X
projection creates an auxilary line
perpendicular to the last point clicked
and the entity within the snap aperture
a snap point will also appear at the
intersection of the auxilary line in
this entity
opposite creates an auxilary line that
starts at the last point clicked and
goes through the entity within the snap
aperture placing a snap point of equal
distance from the last point clicked to
the entity on the opposite side of this
entity
ortho forces drawing and dragging
operations to be at specific angles the
default ortho angle known as the ortho
step is set at 90 degrees this can be
changed under angle options
you
workplane intersection allows you to
snap to the intersections between 3d
entities in the current work plane
for this to work correctly you must have
both the work plane and the
intersections displayed
you
extended ortho creates orthogonal
auxilary lines of infinite length for
the currently highlighted snap notice
the light magenta X appears when I hover
over an active snap point I can create
multiple auxiliary lines by briefly
hovering over different snap points in
this example I will draw a straight line
from the green circle to the red square
using quadrant and Nuristan graphic with
extended ortho as my guide
a parent intersection creates an
auxilary line at the same angle as the
entity you are hovering over
multiple entities can be highlighted
creating an intersection where these
segments would eventually meet and
