Create a 3D Logo | Illustrator Tutorial Video Lecture | Adobe Illustrator: Become a Pro at Designing - Design Softwares

everybody welcome into this adobe
illustrator tutorial brought to you as
always by Thoth vidcom you saw the title
up there right we're going to create
this cool 3d logo mark and I have to
before we get started give a huge shout
out an artist his name it well I'll have
his link his Instagram link down in the
description that would that kind of
inspired this whole thing I saw a link
to some of his work online and was like
I gotta go ahead and create this this
would make such an amazing tutorial and
his Instagram handle is act by Angelo
Vito I'll make sure I put a little
Instagram bug here on the screen but
also like I said they'll be a link down
in the description so you can go ahead
and throw him a follow and check out the
incredible work that that they've got
over there on his Instagram channel some
pretty sweet stuff so we're going to
jump in to illustrator we're going to
create this if you do enjoy this video

jump in and take a look at this right
now now this obviously is an example of
what we're going to make before we get
started making it you'll probably want
to go and download the color scheme it's
a series of gradient stripes it's this
dot ai file you can download it and
you'll be able to drag these gradient
stripes into the document which we're
working with so you can get this exact
shape that I'm creating here of course
you can go ahead and create your own
create own gradient but if you want to
create the exact shape that we're
working with here you'll want these
gradients and of course I'll show you
how to use recolor artwork to go in and
tweak the colors and really truly make
it your own as well let's get started
here I've got a brand new document just
to show you my document is 2560 by 1440
as you can see there but I don't need to
create a new one because I have a blank
one already waiting for me now what we
want to do is create a diamond shape and
I'm going to create the diamond shape
using the star tool seems a little
unconventional maybe because it is but
this is how we're going to create it
first things first over here we've got
our fill in our stroke and the
bottom part of the toolbar with the fill
in the like the foreground if you will
we're going to hit this little slash
icon just to get rid of the fill all we
want is our black or really charcoal
colored stroke now up here underneath
the rectangle tool is the star tool if I
select the store tool I click once I
want to make a very simple star in fact
it's not even a star at all it's a three
point shape which would be a triangle
radius one should be 25 pixels radius 2
should be 50 pixels and we're good to go
we're going to hit OK
look at that beautiful little triangle
if I grab my move tool you're going to
see that it is in fact just a triangular
stroke I'm going to select this shape
we're going to go edit copy and then I'm
going to go edit - paste in front and
we're gonna have a second triangle if I
open up here on my layers panel I've got
two of these triangular paths the top
one is selected that's indicated by that
little that highlighted circle with the
Blue Square great I'm going to go object
transform reflect and I'm going to
reflect this along the horizontal axis
okay there the dialog boxes it popped up
so we're going to reflect it along the
horizontal axis I have preview ticked on
and that's going to show me that I'm
essentially flipping the triangle upside
down exactly what I need I'm going to
hit OK and I'm going to zoom in on this
so I'm going to grab my magnifying glass
here and I'm going to click a few times
we're going to zoom way in on this now
the point and the idea is to drag this
triangle up above our existing triangle
and get it to snap exactly into place
well in order to make this happen we
want to come up here to the View menu
make sure we've smart guides turned on
and you can also use snap to grid snap
to fix or snap to point I tend to prefer
smart guides I just like it more so I'm
going to drag this closer and I'll feel
it click like you'll just feel it there
it is it clicked and you can see if you
look close we've got these weird corners
see how it's like kind of sticking out
past each other
don't worry about that that's going to
go away in a second because what we're
going to do is grab our white arrow tool
it's the direct selection tool and I'm
going to just drag a selection over the
middle of both of these triangles what
I'm doing is essentially selecting the
path that runs between both triangles
it's actually two paths because remember
we're sort of overlapping those paths on
the bottom of our triangle with both of
those paths selected them and hit my
Delete key to delete that straight
across path we almost have our diamond
shape but check out the corners they're
not
so you can see the little gap so we want
to select each corner and go object path
join and that's going to join it and
then we want to select the other
unjoined two anchor points object path
join and now our two triangles as we can
see here in the layers panel are one
single path and if we flip the the
stroke and the fill it's just a diamond
shape I don't want to do that though I
want to keep my stroke the way it is in
fact I want to grab my regular selection
tool here hold down my shift key and I'm
just going to rotate the diamond so it's
kind of laying flat like this instead of
being up-and-down the way it was and I
need to make a few copies of this
triangle so I'm going to go edit copy
and then I'm just simply going to paste
this in back so we're pasting it beneath
what we only had the bottom path select
it let's undo that let's make sure we
select this whole kit and kaboodle here
let's try this again edit copy and then
we'll go edit paste and back and you can
see this time we've pasted the entire
path and again with out here under view
smart guides smart guides is going to
help us out again because we need to
drag this down until it clicks right
into place just like that so we kind of
almost get this repeating tile pattern
and I'm going to select this shape that
we just created we're going to go edit -
copy and then we'll paste this in back
as well and we're going to drag this
shape down and click it right into place
like that great now we're going to go
back and grab our topmost shape here and
we're going to use the hot keys now so
the hotkey to copy command or control C
and now we're going to paste in front
not in back because we want this later
stack on top so I'm going to hit command
or ctrl F to paste in front and I'm
going to drag this up and over out
toward the right just like that and then
commander ctrl C commander ctrl F
boom and we've got our shape just like
that now if i zoom out just a touch you
can see we've got our five diamonds all
lined up like this in fact they'd only
really necessarily look like diamonds
anymore they almost look like bricks in
a path which is maybe a little bit of
what we're going for
we're building sort of a grid for this
shape I'm going to zoom out one more
tick because we're gonna do something
interesting now I'm going to take the
topmost diamond here and I'm going to
copy it and I'm going to paste this in
front again so commander ctrl C
commander ctrl F alright we've got it
doubled off these these two diamonds
right here are the same diamond they're
just stacked exactly on top of one
another we're gonna go object transform
rotate and I'm going to rotate this here
you go I already have it in place rotate
it by
see degrees I have preview ticked on so
I can see what's going on 60 degrees we
want to rotate go ahead and hit okay and
then we're going to drag this guy up
until he snaps right into place right
there right so now we begin the process
of building another row of diamonds now
here's an even faster way to duplicate
these shapes we can simply hold down alt
or option key click and drag that shape
and drop it right into place when it
clicks into place all there option click
and drag and it will snap right into
place courtesy of our wonderful smart
guides there we go voila
all right great so we have our sort of
second line of brick pattern now I want
to select all five of these shapes so I
can do that here in the layers panel I
can just click on the little circle
you're associated with the layer hold
down shift so like the next circle the
next circle the next circle and the next
circle alright I got all five of them
selected I want to hold down alt or
option and drag this entire row of
diamonds and snap it into place here at
the bottom of our original row of
diamonds so we have three rows of
diamonds we're not finished yet we now
need to duplicate this original center
run of diamonds if we scroll down in our
layers panel they're all down here all
five of these paths will do the same
trick here where we select the circle
hold down shift circle shift circle
circle and circle hold down the alt or
option key we're going to drag out a
copy of this and we're going to click it
into place down here and we need to drag
out an additional copy and drop it into
place up here so I'm just waiting for it
to click into place there we go great
now believe it or not this is actually
the base of our shape and this is going
to give us all the shapes all the cell's
we need to create this 3-dimensional
looking shape that we're going to be
finishing in fact it's going to look
just like this the trick is going to be
to trim off the edges and we're going to
do that using the pen tool now this is
also a point at which it's very very
helpful to have smart guides turned on
it's going to really help us get perfect
alignment with the pen tool and don't
worry if you've never used the pen tool
before we're just drawing straight lines
so grab the pen tool and again we're
just drawing you leave your fill and
Stroke options set to whatever just this
black stroke works perfectly well and we
want to come over here to the second
square in right on this top run
so it's this diamond shape here so it's
the second diamond in from the right
we're going to place the beginning of
our path right on top of that anchor see
how
says anchor right so we want to click
once and then what we're going to do is
come across just cut that diamond
straight in half what we want to make
sure we're hovering over the anchor
point so I'm going to just there we go
anchor and then I'm going to head
downward and cut the next square in half
as well so I'm gonna head down to that
anchor point then I'm just going to
randomly create the shape out over here
right just like that so we've created
our first shape great let's come over
here now and we want to just split this
diamond in half right here so I'm just
going to drag out a shape over that just
like that you can see we're creating the
important thing is this one line these
are the lines as long as they're kind of
swallowing up the other half of that
diamond they're perfect right just like
that is great see how we created this
shape we've got our perfect line there
perfect line there and then we're just
swallowing up this bit out here because
all this bit out here is going to be
trimmed off so the shape is almost like
our perfect cutting guide if you will
now we're going to come down here to
this corner we're going to go to that
second diamond in from the left right
here and we're going to cut across it on
a perfect diagonal just like so and then
we're going to cut across that little
diamond on a perfect diagonal see if I
can land on the anchor points and
intersect is probably fine and then I'm
just going to create my rough shape
around it and then over here we're just
simply going to cut this little diamond
shape in half just as we did right up
here across from it right so now that
we've done that we can zoom out just a
touch and here's about what your shape
should look like the important or most
important things are that you're
splitting this diamond in half that
you're splitting that diamond in half
right and that up here we're getting one
long diamond cut and one shorter diamond
cut those are the most important things
right and the same thing you know
basically with the corners that are
catty-corner those they should be
matching or corresponding if you will so
that's great now what we want to do is
select this whole kit and kaboodle so
just select the whole stinking thing all
of it we're going to go window and open
up our Pathfinder panel that guy right
there Pathfinder now the Pathfinder has
some interesting tools for us but the
one feature we're interested in is the
divide feature it's this icon here there
you go even even illustrators telling us
it's divided we're going to select that
and what it's going to do you can see it
groups all of our paths into one big
group but it also does is it takes and
it cuts your paths anywhere that a path
runs over another path so these paths we
created sort of lopping off these
corners of our shapes it's
give us a perfect cut but in order to
kind of gain access to them we need to
ungroup this mess because it's just
grouped it up so if we select one path
we select them all so let's go object
ungroup and now what we can do is just
drag a selection over like this top area
delete and you can see we trim that
right off
I can select both of these shapes here
delete I can drag over these four or
five shapes here delete and I can do the
same thing down here for these shapes
and delete and now we have the essence
of our shape now we're going to begin
merging these cells together to create
the actual faces of this 3d object see
it's not that difficult I'm just going
to save my document here so we don't
lose any of our work in the event that
illustrate it or my computer crashes and
we're going to go right ahead and begin
creating our shapes so the first thing I
want to do is this shape here this L
this is going to be one face if I look
at my shape you can see yes there's an L
shape there in fact there's an L shape
on the other side so let's just grab
those shapes first so with my selection
tool I'm just going to hover over and
make a selection of those three cells
hold down my shift key and select that
last cell you see I've got those four
cells selected I'm going to use the
hotkey shift X that's going to take the
stroke and make that the fill so shift X
and you can see boom it becomes like a
solid shape the problem is these are
disjointed cells you can see I've got
one of them up here in my layers panel
one of them is here and other ones way
down here it's just a mess so the way
that I fix this is again with the
Pathfinder panel I'm going to use the
third icon over called merge ranks and
merge that's going to convert those
cells to one solid shapes that we got a
nice L shape we're going to do the same
thing up here grab those three cells
hold down shift grab the cell on the
bottom shift X to swap fill and Stroke
and go ahead and merge it boom we have
two L shapes just like that next up
we're going to grab the shape across the
top I believe right we got this you get
the shape across the top and the shape
across the bottom we'll grab them and
fill them so we've got that shift X to
flip it in fact let's set the fill to
something that's just a little more
noticeable than the gray let's give it
ya like this kind of pinkish color
that's fine and we'll go ahead and merge
those together wonderful and I'm going
to grab these guys shift X and I'm going
to hit the letter I to bring up my
eyedropper tool I'm going to sample that
same pink color from the top shape use
that merge merge Pathfinder option boom
we got that now what we need to do is
select these three shapes here across
the top right because you can see we've
got that's
in shape and that's one shape there so
we're going to grab think we'll use the
layers panel to do this actually let's
uh let's go let's try grabbing these yep
there we go hold down shift select the
next circle and the next circle so these
three paths are those three paths
they're shift X to swap the fill on the
stroke merge them together let's give
this a color that's noticeable maybe
we'll just go with like a green or
something there we go voila and we will
grab the next three diamond shapes down
here these are these three and our
layers panel hold down shift and select
each of these little circles shift X to
swamp the stroke with the fill and the
letter I eyedropper sample that green
make sure you merge the shapes together
using Pathfinder and we're good to go
now the last thing we have our three
little diamonds in the middle and those
are these three original diamonds here
so the first guy is this shape off to
the to the left shift X to flip that we
really don't need to merge it with
anything let's just give it a color
maybe we'll give it like a blue or
something alright great and what we'll
do is select the path across from it
right over here a shift X hold down the
press the letter I sample that same blue
great and then all we need to do here
for the path in the middle we really
don't want to see any of this so we're
going to select the little stroke and
we're just going to choose the none
option get rid of that stroke so here is
the base of our 3d shape these are all
the faces of our 3d shape and if we add
the right gradients we're going to get a
beautiful 3d looking shape like this we
can throw a shadow beneath and do all
that cool stuff and it's super quick and
super easy so once you have your basic
shape I'm going to zoom out just a
little bit let's collapse this first
layer in the layers panel and create a
new layer and we'll just name this layer
color or something because what we'll do
is open up that dot ai file that you
downloaded you downloaded it right
there's a link down in the description
you can go and grab it you want to
unlock the gradients layer so we hit the
little lock icon there and select the
gradients layer and we'll just go edit
copy and bring it over to the 3d working
file that you're working with we're
going to zoom out here you don't in fact
it might be useful to grab the numbers
as well let's grab the numbers with the
gradient so I'm going to unlock the
numbers layer there I just drag drag a
selection over everything edit copy and
I'm gonna bring it over to my file here
and then just command or ctrl V to paste
it and the reason that I have the
numbers there is just so I know how to
communicate
you guys what gradient I'm putting on
what face of the little 3d object here
so it's going to be pretty simple at
this point all we need to do is select
one of the the faces and use the
eyedropper tool and sample that gradient
so the face number one is going to be
this first diamond in here right this
guy right here and I'm just I know I'm
zoomed out a little bit but it's just so
we can see all of our gradients as well
so face one is this first little diamond
here grab the eyedropper tool and simply
sample the gradient stripe on top face
number two is going to be this guy right
down here across from him so we're going
to select that face go ahead and hit the
letter AI and sample that gradient yep
we want to make sure we want to make
sure we're sampling the correct gradient
there we go I somehow got the wrong
gradient there next we're going to grab
the number three gradient and the number
three face is going to be this green guy
right up here the green guy across the
top I mean hit the letter AI we're going
to grab gradient number three beautiful
grab the selection tool grab the the
green shape on the bottom that's face
number four we're going to grab the
fourth gradient for that and then we go
to gradient five which is going to be
the topmost triangle we can hit the
letter AI we're going to sample that
gradient there cool you can see how this
takes all the guesswork right out of it
right when you're number it number of
face number six is one all the way on
the bottom so that's the gradient there
great face number seven is the L on the
far right side so we're gonna grab that
kind of later pinkish-red gradient and
then the last phase face number eight is
the L all the way over on the Left we're
going to grab the last gradient for that
and you can see we've created this shape
fairly easily right we can just grab the
whole thing now we can scale it up make
it a little bit larger if we group the
shape because right now it's not grouped
we probably want to group it before
trying to align it so well object group
that way the shape doesn't break apart
when we align it and we have our
alignment options we'll make sure we
have a line to artboard selected and let
me select the shape again align both
horizontal and vertically there we go
great now to create the shadow we're
going to create the shadow and then I'll
show you how to change the colors pretty
easily for this as well in order to
create the shadow let's just select the
full shape go command or ctrl C or just
come up here and choose edit copy and
then edit paste in front that's going to
paste it exactly in place then we're
going to make sure we lock at the bottom
group so to lock the layer you just want
to click
most open space between the eyeball and
that colored bar right it's going to
lock that layer so we don't do anything
to it accidentally and we're going to
give this entire shape one solid color
so let's just come up here to our color
panel and just choose like the solid
color black but actually that's not
going to do anything well it's all it's
going to do is give it a black stroke
because as you can see here we have
stroke selected so it's not going to do
us much good we want to make sure we
have Phil brought to the foreground we
have Phil brought to the foreground then
we fill it with black it's going to fill
the entire thing with black you can see
here this is probably the bad part of
even keeping the shape in the middle we
can get rid of that easily just use the
direct selection tool select that Center
shape delete delete' and it will all go
away and we just have this nice full
black shape we can grab the black shape
remember it's still a group and we can
merge this to make it one solid shape
using the merge Pathfinder command and
what I think I'm going to do is just
kind of squish this down a little bit
maybe bring it inward a little bit hold
on your alter option key to just you
know squish both sides at the same time
then just drag this way down below
something like that we'll go effect blur
Gaussian blur and we'll probably slap
like a forty to fifty Gaussian of 40 50
pixel Gaussian blur on it there's my
Gaussian blur dialog box something like
50 pixels is probably great we'll go
preview and you can see that's what it
looks like we'll go ahead and hit OK and
then the key for this is just go to the
transparency panel here and that's
window window transparency I just want
to knock the opacity down pretty low
something like fifteen percent twenty
percent something like that and there
you go you get a nice little shadow
beneath it now let's unlock our other
layer which illustrator is displaying as
a solid black shape but as we can see
it's very much not a solid black shape
it's just kind of glitching out in terms
of the way that the user interface is
displaying one of the things that we
could do here is duplicate the shape
again and try putting some kind of cool
stroke on onto this to further
accentuate the edges let's just give
that a shot real quick so select that
shape let's just actually drag the
shadow down below everything here
because it naturally would appear below
everything let's just copy the group
commander ctrl C and then command or
ctrl V to paste it in front so this top
one let's select this and let's just
call this stroke now what we'll do is
we'll get rid of the fill so just select
the slash over here in the the toolbar
with the fill as are like foregrounds
brought to the forum when you hit the
slash it's going to get rid of the fill
then select the stroke and I think what
we'll do is give this a black to white
gradient
okay okay and we'll come up here to the
gradient panel and you can see it's just
black to white not too bad what I think
I'll do is select the black handle here
and make it white so let's make that
full white and we'll just reduce the
opacity to zero so it's really just a
white to transparent gradient I think
that'll be kind of cool and then we'll
go to stroke we could try pushing it's
like a two-point stroke and deselect you
can see what it does it doesn't look all
that good right now but if we select it
and go to the transparency panel and
just set this to something like I don't
know soft light it'll kind of blend with
the color a little bit more and just
further accentuate those edges and
obviously you can go into all the
individual faces here within the the
stroke group and adjust them so all the
highlights really line up where they
should but just add like a quick little
effect that's kind of neat little do is
go overlay just to give it a little bit
more pop with the color and something
like that I might be a little bit too
much in the transparency panel we might
want to just tone down the opacity just
a little bit and take it down to like 70
or so I don't know something like that
that's not too bad and now last but not
least if we want to change the colors of
this just change the overall colors and
not have to go in and tweak every
individual gradient well just select
that layer group so this original layer
group with with all those shapes with
the gradients right and then we choose
the recolor artwork option up here in
our top toolbar recolor artwork and
basically the easy way to think about
this is just go right to the edit
portion of it and tick this little icon
down here this is the link harmony
colors all that means is all of these
little color stops which represent all
the colors in your gradients when you
start shifting hue and saturation and
brightness it's going to just make sure
they all stay relative one to another if
you don't link this only that selected
color that big color right there is
going to move so like if I move hue see
how just that one guy is changing and
then just one gradient changes but it
looks not very right if you start
screwing up all your gradients hit this
little eyedropper icon up here so you
get colors from selected art it'll take
you back to where you were but make sure
you link all your colors that way we
start shifting hue you get a totally
different colored shape and you can
really begin to change the way the shape
looks with you know relative ease and if
you've got a good base grading you're
working with that's pretty sweet you can
change the saturation you can change the
brightness when you darken this up just
a little bit right something like that
and then we could hit OK and voila just
like that we have completely
change the color of this little piece of
artwork I'll zoom in on this just a
touch and yeah I mean it's really pretty
simple to do it's pretty easy you can
see using this effect you can create all
sorts of sort of pseudo 3d objects here
in Adobe Illustrator it's so cool it's
so easy it's so fun use that Pathfinder
panel it can be so useful now if you
