Cinema 4D Tutorial - Making Patterns using Sketch and Toon Hatch Shader Video Lecture | Create stunning 3D Graphics with Cinema 4D - 3D & Animation

hey everybody its EJ from eyes I'm calm
and in today's tutorial I'm gonna show
you how you can use the sketch into an
hat shader
to create stylish patterns procedurally
inside of cinema 4d now you can use this
for any kind of workflow you make 2d
patterns for your After Effects or
Photoshop workflow but basically the
hash shader is like a corner object for
texture so let's go ahead and learn all
about the semaphore D hatch shader let's
check it out

alright so let's talk about the cinema
4d hatch shader so the hatch shader I
like to think of it as a cloner for
image textures so basically what this
image is got a little sloth dude here I
use just a single line texture or a
stroke from Photoshop and it was like a
square tile texture so you can see if I
jump into Photoshop here this is the
line it's a square it's a perfect square
tile and then I also created you know a
bunch of different tile patterns as well
so these are easily tileable and brought
one of them in there and using the hatch
shader it allowed me to procedurally
build a pattern texture using just that
one image so this is really really great
for maybe thinking outside of the box as
far as it comes to cinema 4d where you
can actually use it to maybe just create
a pattern that you use in After Effects
or Photoshop so that's what I'm gonna
break him down today is the hatch shader
and like I said it's kind of like the a
cloner for image textures so let's just
go ahead and load this up it's in the
sketching tool module so you only have
the hatch shader if you have the
visualizer studio studio versions of
cinema 4d so if you don't have those
versions shout out some money and grab
it because it's a very worthwhile
features especially if you're in the 2d
sketch Intune is the best so let's go on
to the hatch shader and immediately it's
just gonna turn everything white and
what I'm gonna do is just go into my
interactive render region view here and
just make sure that this little
quality slider this little triangles all
the way up to the top so we can get a
good representation of what our final
render is gonna look like and I'll just
move our a little sloth dude over here
to the side and the first thing you need
to do is load up a texture sorry showed
you those Photoshop textures those
little Tai level textures and I have
them right in here and I think what I'm
gonna do is just grab that thick line
texture and again the resolution is 256
by 256 and this is all dependant on you
know are you needing these tile textures
to be very huge if so you probably want
a higher resolution than this but since
I'm probably gonna be scaling this
texture down having this 256 by 256 is
no biggie
and gonna be fine for me so we have all
of these options here and they can be
quite daunting to just kind of see them
see what's going on here so what I'm
gonna do is just kind of go in first
right click on our material preview
window here and shoot change this from
sphere to plane and this is gonna help
us out to figure out what the heck is
going on with all of these options here
another thing I'm gonna do is just kind
of turn off all of the scatter and for
the density I'm gonna bring this up to
100 and what you can see in this little
material preview window and actually
what I'm gonna do for the time being is
grab a let's grab a cube here and apply
that same texture on the cube now see
what happens this is why I activated
this plane material preview because
what's happening is the hatch shaders
tiling this single image a whole bunch
of times and this is actually the tile
pattern that the hatch shader created
and you can see that exact pattern right
here so I can actually go and scale this
down and you can see now we have a lot
more of these little little lines and
that is on one single face of our cube
object and you can see that it's
actually getting smaller on our little
sloth character here as well so if we
keep bringing these down you can see
exactly what's happening
now this is a great starting point to go
through all the other options in the Hat
shader so the first up is the offset U
and the offset V and this basically just
pushes you can see how this is kind of
creating a little gap here it's just
pushing and offsetting that tiled
pattern that tiled square off offsetting
in the U and the V and how I remember
what direction each of these are is U is
horizontal and V is vertical so V
vertical up-and-down that's kind of how
I remember the difference between U and
V I'm just gonna bring these back to
zero density is the overall density of
how many of these clones are actually
applied to our object now notice when I
bring the density down it's actually
removing some of those tiles so it's
it's kind of like cloning onto an object
and cloning onto a polygon object and
maybe decreasing the count of the clones
right so you're actually just taking
away clones that were otherwise cloned
in a grid pattern and if I just bring
this down you can see we're getting
fewer and fewer so that makes sense
right so density we have these you know
tiled perfectly tiled patterns here now
here is where we can introduce a little
bit of randomness as far as the
positioning goes let me just scale up
our cube a little bit more here and this
is how we introduce a little bit of more
more organic natures to our pattern add
a little bit more randomization so
scattering is basically scattering and
randomly moving on the U and the V so
horizontally and vertically all these
little tiles and you can see that you
don't really need to use a huge value to
introduce a little bit of cool
randomization and this is this looks
pretty nice for like a fir especially if
this was scaled down on the actual sloth
character here so let's just bring these
scatter U and V back to zero and
scattering is different from spacing as
far as if I adjust the spacing here you
can see that's actually spreading out
the tiles in the U
as well as the V vertically so you can
see we have a lot more room a lot more
space between each of these tiles here
so you can see how that's different from
the scattering because now I can
actually scatter and that gives us a
little bit more of room so none of these
little patterns
none of these little lines overlap
because you can see if we start pushing
these values a little bit too far we can
run into some issues where you know some
of these tiles kind of overlap and you
know you might like that you might not
but usually you don't have to use two
high values here if you want something
like fur or you know whatever you want
to do there and then we also have this
variation which basically just kind of
adds randomness to that spacing into U
and the V as well so you can see that if
we bring in high values here we're still
not getting any overlapping or anything
like that but we still have some really
nice randomization happening as far as
the spacing goes so scale U and V this
is kind of like I always say that using
these values is kind of like using a
random effector on clones so we can
randomize the spacing the position right
with the U and the V scattering and
spacing we can also randomize the
scaling in the U and the V so if I you
maybe adjust the variation of the
scaling so maybe you know 20 and the u
20 in the V you can see that we're kind
of getting some stretched out and some
squashed little tiles here and that
looks pretty cool looks a little bit
extra a little bit extra more random me
that's a word finally we have rotation
so again exactly like a random effector
where we can add random rotation to this
so it's just kind of spinning our little
tiles here and creating some really cool
textures and I see this a lot in you
know 2d animations where you got these
really cool patterns and they're all you
know they have all the random rotation
and stuff like that and again you can
actually just make a pattern inside of
cinema 4d using the hatch shader render
it out use inside of After Effects for
you know some work and shapes and stuff
in there or Photoshop right so this is
kind of
my go-to settings for pattern creation
what we can also do is you know this is
created to that this shader was used for
kind of like a cross hatching for like
you know pen and pencil kind of looks so
we also have these crosses options which
you know allow you to crosshatch and
kind of cross the two tile patterns
together and you know kind of make them
overlap and stuff like that which you
know this is cool too but I typically
don't use that the tile UV is helpful
for especially when you're using offset
if I turn off the tile you can see that
we have this gap here in tile UV
basically like tiles the actual UV
square to fill in all those gaps and
then the rotational UV fills in gaps
another way by just totally taking this
texture and then rotating it entirely so
one square is then rotated as a whole
versus individually like the rotate down
here so this kind of looks like
sprinkles and is making me hungry for
ice cream but that's you know these kind
of settings can allow you to get a lot
of really cool pattern looks on your
objects so let's go ahead and we have
our hatch shader here let's go ahead and
choose new colors for this we don't want
black and white so let's go and use a
colorizer
and this will allow us to remap those
black and white colors to whatever we
choose in this gradient I'm just gonna
remove this gradient not here and you
can see now we have just the red and
yellow and that's you know trans
converting the grayscale values to color
I'm just gonna choose no interpolation
here and actually this is this is a
pretty cool that was kind of by accident
but you can see these little individual
squares that are our little tiles which
is kind of cool so that just a little
behind-the-scenes of what's going on so
that was kind of a happy accident so now
we can just choose new colors so let's
let's just sample like this um
let's sample this light blue and then
I'll just remove that not and just make
it this not a little bit darker and
there's our
kind of fur color me that's a little bit
too dark cool so now what we can do we
don't need our cube anymore the one
thing I want to kind of demonstrate is
the probable need to adjust the tiles
based on based on your object so for
like for this object for example we have
this kind of pinching at the bottom here
so what we'll need to do and what you
should get familiar with because this is
something that you'd have to do with any
kind of you know tileable texture is
getting used to getting familiar with
the projection methods here so like
cubic may be doing cubic kind of helps
you with some of these objects here and
maybe making that seamless you know just
kind of playing around with this and
this isn't actually the near the correct
way to do this but you know using the
scaling on the U and the V so again this
scaling is different from the actual
pattern scaling here and actually let me
let me just kind of reintroduce our cube
sorry cube I deleted you too soon you
are too soon you're too young to be
deleted that early so let's go and I
want to just demonstrate the difference
between scaling in the U and the V on
the texture tag and scaling in the
actual hatch shader so let's go and just
open this up move this off the side here
and go into our hatch shader now
remember when I first opened up this
little flat preview window this is
basically the texture the tile that's
going to be tiled multiple times and if
I go into my texture manager and bring
this to 50% you can see that that
texture is now being tiled and being
scaled down and tiled to fill out the
space the problem with this is we need
to turn on this tile UV because some of
these little tiles are being clipped you
can see right in here it's kind of
getting clipped off so that's where the
towel UV kind of comes in handy but
again we have this this overlapping so
we need to it start adjusting some
things like the scattering
and all that good stuff like that maybe
some of the density as well it's too low
but that is different from scaling here
if I scale in the actual hatch a shader
here I'm actually changing what that
single tile that's tiled along your
object looks like so totally different
kind of things so just keep that in mind
again this is very heavily dependent on
you know making this making the UV
mapping look like you want it to so if I
have like a cylinder and this is kind of
like a little intro to you know texture
mapping or something here if I have this
here and I'm in my interactive render
region right the top and the bottom caps
look fine but our texture is warped on
the sides here so what we would need to
do is go ahead to our cylinder go into
texture mode and see that this is using
UVW mapping but we have this cylindrical
here which is going to help us out a
little bit so what we can do is go into
our enable access modification mode
scale this up so this little bounding
box kind of fits the shape and then what
we can do is go into our texture tag and
scale this down horizontally so it's not
so stretched right so now if we do
something like this that's looking a lot
more like it should but again we're
having some issues where well the main
issue is none of our tiles are on the on
the caps of our cylinder well except for
right down there and that looks way
warped in no bueno so what we need to do
is make this editable right I'm gonna
get out of interactive render region
here and show my shading and just make a
loop selection by hitting ul and
selecting the top cap whoops and the
bottom cap and just going to tool or
select
set selection and now what we can do is
use that same material let's go back
into interact whoop just hitting all the
wrong buttons today going into
interactive render region right there
and then we'll use the same texture
we'll apply this and use that polygon
selection tag that we just created and
actually this looks perfect because
remember that UVW mapping projection
look good on the caps but now on the
sides now it actually looks good
everywhere so that's cool we can also
use either flat and you'll understand
why this looks stretched if I go into my
texture mode here and see that the flat
plane is actually rotated the wrong way
so what I need to do is just go ahead
and rotate that 90 degrees and there we
go
and then I can also just constrain the
scaling by going to my enable axis
modification mode and scaling this whole
sucker up and that works as well so flat
projection works cubic projection will
work as well and yeah those are some
other projection methods that'll help
you out there so just to you know keep
in mind that you know I applied this to
a cube and it looked perfect because
it's mapped correctly sometimes you'll
have to you manually get a little bit
into the nitty-gritty and get your hands
dirty with the projection and if you're
really know your stuff getting too into
some you know body paint and which I
kind of had to do for my little sloth
guy so speaking of the sloth guy let's
go ahead and make this fur look nice so
let's maybe turn down the rotation here
maybe 35 something subtle and let's
actually just bring bring all this stuff
down to that original value so we have
that really nice grid see so scale the
rotation is good maybe for a little bit
less subtle or a little bit more subtle
I should say and we'll just scale this
down again you're seeing that issue we
had with the cylinder is I have to
a bunch of separate objects I'm probably
going to need to go ahead and adjust how
this is mapped on to my arms so again
I'll probably need to scale this stuff
up something like that and maybe even
you know make a whole new material if I
want for the arms and legs just to get
them the same sizes but this is kind of
the quick and dirty version maybe the UV
mapping version actually the UV mapping
version looks pretty good I'm actually
gonna cheat and cover this up by just
kind of putting you know for his hands
put a different color down here that'll
be white so you won't be able to see
that and you know texture mapping is all
about hiding seams so that's how I'm
hiding my seam there so let's just scale
this down a little bit more so again the
size matches the main body and I think
that's looking good that looks pretty
nice and again we have our and this is
kind of the starting spot I like to
stick to is you know density let's do
100 is just that original grid view and
this you know could look cool if this is
exactly what you're going for this is a
really good look or again we can just
you know bring down the density
introduce a little bit of scatter again
a little bit goes a long way with the
scattering values you can see already
with the value of three and two we have
some overlapping so maybe one enough one
yeah and even even one in one looks you
know is a little bit overlap II overlap
II so maybe 0.5 and that's just enough
and you know maybe adjust the density
remove some more of those tiles and you
know maybe adjust a little bit of the
spacing here give spread out some of
these little little guys and again I'd
probably want to create a different
texture for the arms and legs and I'll
just do that really quickly really
quickly so that you don't know why it's
named one arms legs I'm just hitting all
kinds of buttons today and the body and
then this way I can go in and just
we control probably wanting a little bit
more density on the arms and legs there
to fill in and cool so let's just go
ahead and say and I've been talking a
lot about you know thinking outside of
the box and maybe we can use this for
just creating a just a pattern just the
texture we can use for After Effects so
let me just show how you can do that
really quick so we're gonna go ahead get
a background let's go ahead and apply a
material to that background and make
sure we have luminance turned on and
let's actually make sure that background
is showing I had alpha mode on so I
wasn't seeing the background now we can
see the background let's just rename
this bkg and throwing this in the
luminance because again don't want any
too diffuse shading we just want flat
color so we can go in here grab our
sketch in toon hatch shader and again
use an image and again the great thing
about this is I can go ahead and change
that pattern to anything I want it will
just immediately update so I can choose
the zig zag and this will be our nice
zig zaggy pattern and again I want a new
and accurate preview so I'll go and
change this to plain and I can see this
one tile is mapped and stretched out to
fill up our HD composition here so what
you would want to do is kind of shrink
this down right we're gonna use the the
all the little values in our texture tag
here for our background and adjust the
scale on the view and the V or the
length here and you just kind of shrink
this down to however however shrunken
down we want this so again this is
vertical scaling this vertically
I found that like a two to one ratio
works so like 15 and then 30 so or one
to two that works to make a perfect kind
of square so we have one square we need
to tell this and we can tile that by
just checking on tile in our background
here you can see we have a little bit
cutting off of our texture here from our
hatch
so again tile UV fixes that and probably
want to adjust the density so we don't
have any overlapping and again now that
we know what all these settings do we
can kind of push and pull this to kind
of space things out as we want and add a
little bit of rotation maybe really
crank up the rotation maybe 360 so we
have a bunch of zigzag ease all over the
place and probably adjust the scatter
and really getting the the look that you
want again really paying attention to
what's going on in this top value here
again remember little goes a long way
with the scatter and we can space them
up out some stuff out and adjust the
variation here and just adjusting the
density so that one little overlap guy
that was there he gone boom all right so
now we can go ahead and get the
colorizer to save the day and just
change this to weather whatever happy
colors we want to turn this into thought
I wasn't gonna have a Bob Ross reference
in this one did you ha tricked you so
here we go let get some yellow and some
orange boom and that's looking good or
we can you know swap whoops we can swap
something like that whatever we want to
do looking good and again just to see
behind the scenes can see our little
blocks are little tiled images here that
is creating that little nice little
pattern so if you wanted to you know
remove the sloth which I don't know why
you want to do that he's so nice and fun
but we can just turn off the sloth turn
off the sloth I don't think that phrase
has ever been uttered in life
turn off the sloth and we have this nice
little background render it out as a PNG
whatever Photoshop file use it for your
2d animations inside of After Effects so
kind of again thinking outside the box
of what cinema 4d can do for you and
your 2d animation workflow
so that's the Hat shader in a nutshell
let's turn on our sloth boom and he's
gonna say bye alright so that is the
cinema4d hat shader if you've never
heard of it before hopefully you have a
newfound respect for it and you can use
it all the time again think outside the
box
you cinema4d in ways that you wouldn't
think of and hat shaders definitely one
of those things for procedural pattern
creation that you really don't have
available to you inside of After Effects
or even Photoshop to that extent so if
