Sub Runner part 1 Construct 2 Video Lecture | Construct Tutorial: Become a Game Maker - Game Development

hey buddy this is John planet tech and
today we're gonna be going over how to
make a endless runner this time is gonna
be underwater I did one where it was
just basically it's like a really really
basic one and I released after the guy
who requests it but then I decided to do
a full fledge one with a menu a level
selector and you can basically choose
you can't choose whatever level but it's
kind of like you unlock the first level
of each well I made enough for 3d but
basically you have love one two and
three and four
we're different scenes and all that type
of stuff we're going to do basic and
then vamp up on it I haven't done
anything exactly like this so it's
something new to channel and like in
every video series that I do we do it in
like a basic one and then we go into the
actual coding and everything so today
we're actually going to start with the
main video a level selection screen next
video we're going to go into the actual
coding of both those scenes and then go
into these level creation and coding bit
so because at that point they're like
two different things we have the menu
where you select everything the level
selector then we code those and then we
actually get to the game actual creation
part and then learn how to code those
because those mechanics are different
from the menu and the level selector so
we have a blue screen I am using a pack
from unity and I will it's closer to the
infinite runner toolkit I actually will
link that down below this little icon
will actually be using that for the game
icon when we actually publish this on
Newgrounds so we're actually going to be
using this for a web application and
then later I will be updating this for
Android so we're going to go into
textures and we have our submarines I'm
actually gonna use these as medium icons
so we can see all the different
have the subs and actually that's part
of it as you unlock a level you also
unlock a ship so you can select whatever
ship you want from submarine choose some
green ones an orange one and some
damaged ones so if we get actually paths
we're gonna have a health bar you get
past 50% your ship will look damaged and
you have to pick up a health icon to
actually get it back to normal so we
actually have to do the backgrounds so
there's strips and then there is gooeys
so you have to find the background so we
have backgrounds so we assign sand some
layers for a background and since we're
gonna be doing a menu I want to be kind
of creative and fun maybe we'll add in
some particles but I wanted to seem like
it's a it's a nice little easy game it's
one of those brainless ones where you
just kind of create not create but we
just play the game okay and we're going
to need some sand where to place that
there so actually gonna put this on top
turn the top
and what we could do is build a lair
where that's kind of hidden but I do
want to see that looks okay yeah I like
that better I'll put that right there -
I want it to look really nice actually
looks like bacon see lair planned at a
rock
and what we can also do later is add a
depth of field using parallax where
these items will slowly move I've been
looking at program to where I can rig
these 2d sprites and then animate them
and bring in the men to construct to as
animated objects or animated sprites and
it will look actually pretty cool so I
think I'll add a snail there it'd be
nice if they had like a crab or
something
those are starfish that's close enough
right there okay now we're going to
insert some buttons to everything so
that we can let's see GUI
caught minibar
I don't know what I'm gonna do let's
delete that for now it's still in our
office objects
remember to name yourself I'm not doing
it now I'll do it when I finish this
episode but name this stuff you import
submarine happy I hope put the name
right there minimize it
we'll put it actually right there and
sir we're gonna enter another sprite buy
back home missions resume we try shop
coins that we can use for pickup and
sonic blast mmm so we'll go down menu we
need to play missions there we go so you
can select your missions we'll put a
little icon next to it I'm a new play
let's see yeah do that one and minimize
it and then let's see if there's an exit
button if not I will just create one
stop mini sound overlay scrollbar blob
torpedo notification
home there's no exit okay I will have to
create one and getting skin skin okay
cool you can create a V home okay you
could create a same thing with an alien
runner so we'll probably do that what
two obstacles oh this will be very very
nice
power-ups so we can create we have a
shield shield icon last icon speed back
sweet fried okay this would be very very
interesting
kind of fun miss you in the mid-year so
that's the current mission menu I should
delete that able to say you click
missions you go into the mission menu so
our layout one watch eb main menu and
then we'll go to layout I'd never lay
out yes we do want to add a event sheet
that tells the code for that scene we're
gonna add another sprite and then this
will be our menu our level selecting
there you guys a bit stretched but it
works there we go ok another sprite
and at this point we will use this menu
menu mission bar not
should delete that and I'll do this one
and this one will say like mission one
two three we're just kind of like three
missions actually I'm going to clone
this okay so we have that one
I throw after the size and then we're
gonna have this one so this one says
size so I'm going to clone we don't want
that one size what this one size you
want that one size boom there we go
so ravish one two and three
she was really one do eight and now for
the menu I like to add some oh we do
have a bolt so I can do a particle
effect okay that then we're going to do
going to textures we're going to go to
the particles there's a bubble a cloud
can off we can go to
let's say let's run this layout to see
what its gonna look like actually come
containing the spray one shot I want to
see what this looks like we're gonna go
into view I'm going to preview browser

running a JavaScript it's gonna start

there's our bubbles where I she want
this to run their rate let's do 10 spray
comb it's good to be a 130 and we're
gonna run layout I want it kind of slow
and yes very similar to that however
it's gonna be a sheet and like the box
is you know releasing bubbles
okay now I want to clone this and rotate
it here and but I want it to be speed of
honored I want this to be slower

we have missions I'll create a custom
exit button and then this is our scene
and then this is our level selector

we're gonna have like how many gold
coins and all that stuff that so the
main goal of this game is to collect
gold coins
so we have our sprites we're gonna clean
pick up here's our power tray all so
obstacles cool we have chain mine and
some torpedoes there's a background
layer a okay GUI we have our menu okay
so we're gonna have to have a shop don't
worry oh yeah for us to be able to buy
our ships and our ships are additional
subs so we're gonna add layout a da
Vinci and this one's gonna be shop and
this one is renamed level
okay so much yeah something like that
it's a new object open it
textures GUI
okay
we're gonna go menu backdrop yeah I
don't like that at all okay we need to
have like a solid color background like
that hanger there we go
well that's like huge
actually this may work so I'll do is
I'll insert a new object and this will
be a tiled background because so take
less it takes less to run an island
background we're gonna run that and the
order it's in the bottom of layer boom
okay so we're gonna have a ship chooser
and one one side of one window will
detail information about it and the
other one will actually choose our ship
so I will now import our ships and the
costs we're going to need to have a cost
the damage here we go so we're gonna any
dis ones you have three submarines so
it's out of your base one I medium one
and then our ultra deluxe one so it's
gonna have information on it so quick it
is how fast this or whatever and then
the actual image ship or since it's a
hanger it's where you just you know you
buy your ships and then you just once
you click on it but you've you know
you've chosen it so it'll be like this
so this one will be off-limits that one
will be off-limits and then you bought
that one and we're and we're gonna
choose a button go back to the main menu
hold on what you would do is she hit the
main menu you'd hit play you do level
selector and then you go straight to
shop where you can choose your ship so
at this point you could only choose this
one and once you click on this one you
go to the first level and when you click
second it's going to also show you your
ships so on main menu I would choose I
would get another button so that you can
see what type of ships there are
yeah shop
insert a new sprite a new clay we try
any play there we go
mother she's hella
and then there will be a ingame little
micro shop to where it's answered ok
we'll deal with that later ear raised
will go to textures and then all rocks
we have a shield icon and you can
actually buy these revive icons you know
you can also pick these up and the acts
of game but you can also buy these for
gold coins that you picked up so this
particles revive the trails and GUI
so there's mini shop i I con so we're
actually gonna put this in right now and
I mean you shop cleaning - we're gonna
actually put that right there
and then we're actually gonna put a
insert a text there we go that text is
gonna tell us how much cash we have
collected in this game so it says well
let's choose a font and I'm gonna do
awesome new size 24 it's gonna be medium
we're gonna slice this up and that's and
in the next year we're gonna set this up
and it's gonna say how much you have now
we're also gonna put a text here saying
how much you have because no matter what
level you play you're constantly adding
to the amount of cash and then we'll do
add ons because a lot of people are
saying hey how do I add onto my game
different stuff so that I can you know
continue on with the player experience
so missions you can just like your
mission and then your ship if you don't
have the ship unlocked it's gonna create
a sound or not available and these
select the ship that you want that you
heard that you have unlocked and then
you play that level and it's basically
gonna keep going keep going keep going
until you eventually die if you're
certain
point our point edge or a number of
coins and say hey you know you know
treats the end of level but you've
reached super super far like when you
reach I every when to reach a thousand
gold coins it says it's gonna actually
reward you with another thousand when
you reach a million or a hundred
thousand or whatever it's gonna you know
reward you and when we go to shop you
can unlock your ship now I eventually
hope this artist guy creates more
submarines so you can choose different
stuff and then we're actually going to
create a since he has and I was going
sprite so I can just show you guys since
he had fun textures alien skins and he
has some alien packs or some sci-fi
packs what we're going to do is create a
sci-fi version of this game so you're
actually gonna have two games inside of
one game on Kongregate so people kind of
play that or you can do it separately
well filly you guys like this video so
on the next one we're actually gonna
code these buttons and so they actually
do stuff we're going to go to level
selector and do the level 1 2 in 3
because you can never really actually
reach the end of the levels they just
kind of keep on going and actually
slightly get harder the longer you get
into them and then we're gonna code in
our shop so it shows you of the amount
of coins that you have whether you can
get to ship or not and then the ability
to actually increase its health so
you're gonna be able to increase its
hull integrity with special abilities
that you can't actually buy because
we're gonna have a mini and gave
whatever shop we're actually gonna have
a little animation to where once you
selected it goes up and then it starts
to leave that's actually gonna be kind
of cool here she watch it
leave the level and once we reach the
they caught the scene if she see it
fade from this scene into the game scene
to where it actually has this part and
you actually see a pretty cool like oh
it's just you know it's the next scene
or whatever so it's actually pretty cool
