A Quick Look at the Godot Game Engine Video Lecture | Godot Game: Learn and Master - Game Development

hello this is Mike again from scratch
and welcome to our first ever a closer
look at game engine video series this is
an ongoing series text based on game
from scratch this is the first one we've
done a video for as well there's also a
text one if you go to game from scratch
comm you can follow along a text is your
preferred format today we're going to be
looking at something called the Godot
engine first off I have no idea if it's
actually called the Kodo engine or not I
know there's the classic show what
classic book Waiting for Godot and I'm
assuming that's what it's based off but
it could be the Godot it could be God
all - it could be goood that I have no
clue but I'm gonna call it Godot I first
pronounced otherwise I apologized to the
creators and that is what I've been
calling it so notice today we are
looking at the code Oh engine and the it
is a cross-platform unity esque game
engine the creators probably hate that
expression but that's probably closest
way to describe it it's written in C++
it's completely open source based on the
MIT license if you don't follow
open-source licenses MIT is about as
friendly as they come you can do
whatever you want with it pretty much
without restriction so you don't have
those kind of snack foods or gotchas the
GPL
comes encumbered with MIT you can
basically do what you like you can take
it down you can change it you can modify
you don't have to share your source but
of course in the spirit of being open
source changes you make obviously they
would like it if you committed them back
to the main branch it's available on
github the source code is otherwise you
can go to go to engine org and download
it there it is available on Windows Mac
and Linux platforms and it can target
pretty much all the ones you can think
of all those platforms listed iOS
Android and then Google Native Client
and then html5 and Windows Phone are in
the works I believe Godot just reached
its 1.0 release that's why I've been
taking a look at a little bit closer and
I will say right up front a bit of a
spoiler I'm very impressed
there's some rough edges but it is a
very nice engine so let's jump right on
in with it to get start of a good up you
just basically go to the website and
download the executable here you might
think this is an installer but it's not
that is
actually your project manager on top of
that you want to go ahead and probably
grab the demos the help files help
materials they're not bad but you will
probably learn more through the demos
than anything else there's also an
improved kalota
colada exporter available for as a
blender plug-in I'm not going to cover
that today but just be aware that is
there as well as export templates which
you'll use later on when you're
publishing your game again I'm not going
to cover that much today but what you
want to do is for whichever platform
you're running you want to go and get
the executable for it and once you've
got that file it's simply a matter of
running it and welcome to Godot when you
first fire up good know it brings you to
this project manager screen everything
is integrated into the exe one thing I
did just jump over there so you can also
easily build it from source there's very
few dependencies if any so the build
process was super simple with on my
setup using visual c 2013 basically you
just need to have a couple of things
installed to get there build process
working number one is Python you should
have Python installed 2.7 X any version
of 2.7 basically the newer versions are
not supported so make sure you get an
older version the previous version of
Python to run it and on top that you
need something called scones which is a
build manager built on top of Python and
once you've got those two things
basically semadar if you check it out
and you run a build command and it built
it's it's a very simple easy build if
you want obviously linux and mac rolled
are going to be a little different in
mac i believe you require xcode to be
installed in windows you're obviously
going to sorry in linux you're obviously
going to need the GCC toolchain
installed but building and running from
source code is very very simple i will
cover it here but if there's enough
demand i can i usually put together a
video on building it from code but you
can probably get through it yourself no
problems so anyways once you've got the
project loaded up this is the main exe
you download or the main executable you
download it it brings you in here to the
project manager here you can basically
run or load existing projects we'll go
ahead and we'll import one from the the
demos package let's go ahead and locate
it right in case it's right here and
what it's going to looking for is a
engine CFG file so any of the examples
we can go with and let me just go jump
straight through the examples right away
there's a pretty impressive number of
them so we've got a set of 2d 3d
miscellaneous and viewport related demos
and your 2d like you say you have a hex
map example isometric example kinematic
character particles platformers etc and
3d you have much the same stuff actually
nav mash navigation Mouse picking so
this is probably going to be your number
one learning source at least until I I
get a set of tutorials up and running I
hope in the meantime there's also the
docs the wiki entry here there's a
getting started step by step I wasn't
really that enthused with what they did
there they do it does show you how to do
things it just doesn't really make it
clear why you're doing them so there is
a bit of a logically for figuring out
how things are working in Godot this is
an area that could use improvement again
at the same time I'm probably going to
put together tutorial series on game
from scratch comm covering Godot so if
you do have interest hopefully I will be
rectifying what I see is a bit of a flaw
there so go ahead and we'll import start
with the isometric example and just
bring in the CFG file and to create the
project so there it is now let's just
load it up and here it's the primary
editor for the godo engine across the
top you can see you've got the three
different views so if you're working on
a 3d scene you'd work here otherwise
you're in the 2d view if you've worked
in unity this should look familiar to
same if you've used constructor game
maker or any other project it has an
integrated map builder you're
essentially building your world out of a
hierarchy of nodes you see over here no
2d and here's your hierarchy so that the
route you've got this dungeon node then
you've got the base overlay a Y sort and
then notes that make up the world itself
here you've got a troll it's a kinematic
body 2d which is the node type it is
just basically means that it's got
physical attached to it there's a number
of different notes but your basic entity
in the Godot engine is going to be a
node of some form well look at what
options are available in a second it's
pretty powerful and it's pretty
easy to grasp you're basically just
making trees of nodes that make your
game and then behind those trees
you use your script and now let's jump
into that you see over here we've got
script that's your script editing window
I'll come back to that I don't want to
spoil other things too much then finally
you've got like an integrated help both
for the nodes available or if you're in
script you can do uh leave it as ctrl +
f1 f1 for context help and it
automatically bring up help for
whichever node you're looking at the
help documentation itself the the
property listings and such are there you
can get the inheritance and such going
on but the amount of description for
methods can be a little bit vague
I did find oddly enough the website has
a little bit more depth
- what's documented there so a lot of
times I actually just found myself with
the website open up to the wiki page
there's a ton on back go down here wiki
yep there's a very bottom there's an
alphabetical class reference and
generally I just kept this open so most
things are spawning out of in a 2-d game
out of node 2d no 2d being like a
visible node in the 2d world here you
can get seemingly I don't know it's
pretty much the same information but you
can navigate the inheritance trees a
little bit easier here so I found myself
working more of the help on the web page
than in Godot like I said it's great
that it's got to help but the
descriptions see there's a nice ample
description for this one it gives you
some idea of what's going on but not all
classes are documented to the same
standard some are going to leave you
like quite literally scratching your
head but it does have a decent amount of
documentation and it does have a decent
amount of tutorials to get you going but
there are definitely some holes there
that do need filling them again for open
source game projects that's almost
always the flaw or the pain point but
anyways let's go on back to the the
let's see so here's your node in the
world you've got over here let's take a
quick look at the UI going on on the
right
inside at the top here you've basically
got you're seeing graph which is your
hierarchy of nodes that compose your
world and then as you have one selected
like I have this kinematic object this
troll selected over here you can see
that's got a selection box or not it
over here and then down here you can see
the inspector which is basically your
properties and again if you've worked in
unity you get this concept because you
will actually see right here it's
composed of it's a component based
design again it's composed of well it is
a kinematic 3d which has a physics body
2d i know 2d canvas item and you can
visually edit the properties here so
this is your visual inspection into the
properties of your selected node item so
you can make quick edits you can have
non programmers working and contributing
so they can place things without needing
to code at all you can also in your code
expose properties back so they can be
edited in the inspector so once again if
you've worked in a visual tool like game
maker or unity this should look very
familiar to another kind of sort of weak
point here let me just show you an
example this dumb this value right here
is 299 N and blah blah blah let me just
change that to 310 and click away and it
didn't edit that's because you've got to
hit enter and with time you get used to
it but you will find there are some
small areas where the UI needs to be
tweaked a little bit to make it a little
bit more usable I also found it a bit
with editing and numbers using the
scroll wheel at the side it's it's a
little finicky minor complaint again
it's been open source it was almost the
beginning of last year considering I am
publishing this basically the very first
day of the new year or the fourth day
technically that means it was open
source pretty much exactly one year ago
so give it time this is the product is
maturing and also the kind of things you
eye type stuff normally is the things
that does mature best over time for
product that is developed originally by
two guys
it's amazing how much is actually in
here so anyways back to the the UI
itself so across the tap you switch
between the three different modes you
play your game by hitting this play icon
here and then boom you can see it
running like so
and shut that down and get a very
annoying alert every single time and
yeah basically there is your main
interface but if you look back over here
into the scene graph you'll see an icon
here that is how you tie a script to an
entity so you see right here there's a
script icon beside the troll and this is
the code that is controlling the logic
of the code of the patrol entity you'll
see at the top here that it's extending
the class kinematic body to D then it's
simply a matter of overriding and
modifying the existing behavior so you
can do a pretty neat amount of
customization using the built-in stuff
and I will go back and I'll show you the
number of actual nodes that are built
into it already and you'll probably some
be somewhat staggered but let's go back
for a second to the the code behind
process so right off the hop you're
extending a base and then implementing
its methods right here fixed process is
pretty much what you would think of in
other game engines as like tick or
update it's your per frame kind of do
something so in your ready function
you're pretty much saying yes we have
fixed process Handler in which case each
ticket is now going to call the fixed
process function and pass in the Delta
the amount of time that's happened since
it was last called now you may be
looking at this scripting language going
what the hell scripting language is that
and at first glance it looks a lot like
Python and the reality it's a lot like
Python it's a white space based language
love it or hate it there are no curly
brackets there are no semicolons so if
you are from a C or C++ or Java kind of
world go to take a little bit getting
used to but for the most part the
constructs are exactly what you expect
now it is their own language it's GD
script it's a Python Drive thing it's a
decision they made if you go to the the
attached text version of this look at
tutorial or not tutorial but this engine
preview if you go to the text version of
it there is actually a link to the
original wiki entry or FAQ entry of why
the author's went with their own custom
scripting language and the number one
reason I think behind the scenes is so
that they could integrate best for C++
behind the scenes and of course you want
and the most common way to go with the
union Gino Soria the Unreal Engine
probably being the only real major
exception right here if you want to use
a higher-level scripting language for
productivity when you're scripting game
process you generally want to work at a
higher level than C++ it's C++ is not a
very efficient language in terms of code
generation it takes a long time to write
C++ it's on wieldy it's easy to make
mistakes so generally you want to work
at a slightly higher level on the top of
that a scripting language is generally
sandbox so if you make a mistake you
don't normally crash things there's not
the security ramifications you can't
hack someone's computer as easily those
kinda things so you can put someone
that's a little bit less knowledgeable
into a scripting language and they can
do a lot less damage the same time a
scripting language didn't theory be
easier to learn and easier to use now
should Godot have used and off-the-shelf
scripting language such as squirrel Lua
JavaScript angel script you name it it's
not really my decision to make there are
definitely advantages there and that
there's more resources available IDE
though there are more tutorials
documentation etc and they can make use
of existing libraries of code but
obviously there are reasons why the
developer chose to create their own
language so that's what they have done
it is a Python derivative language it's
not hard at all to learn it's what also
you can mess around with and once you
get over whitespace being important to
how code execution goes it's not really
that hard to grasp so it is yet another
programming language to learn but it's
not a hard language to learn now one of
the big things that generally and almost
always universally sucks about people
rolling their own scripting language is
then you lose all kinds of lovely things
like code editing debugging all those
things like and you'll notice here
they've got a built in code editor and
it's actually pretty impressive first
off
one thing you'll probably love to see is
there's code completion co completion
when you are learning and just starting
out is invaluable and if you're like me
and lazy
it remains invaluable forever so some of
the things you are looking for in a code
editor are already here now an annoyance
and this is again a little UI thing what
I would normally do now is just do like
shift home that the beginning align to
delete that and unfortunately because I
have this code pop up now my home key
combination isn't doing anything so I
have to hit escape to cancel it out and
then erase so there are some UI warps
that they do have to work through but
they're not that many thankfully so
anyways you've got full code completion
here you've got fine to replace spart
indentation commenting of toggling
commenting so you can comment blocks out
and uncomment them quickly the things
you generally find the typical idea are
actually here as our fine and replace
but most impressive is this and where
life really sucks for scripting language
is generally is there is no duh bugging
support and in this case there is there
is an integrated debugger and that is a
huge value here I'll show you an example
just go ahead here to this line and I go
f9 equivalent or set a breakpoint so I
now have a breakpoint on this line that
will cut called on update and I'll just
go ahead and play the code again and
then boom we've hit it so you look down
here you can see there are your locals
if I do a mouse-over hover on motion I
can see its values this is a huge value
a typical breakpoint and now you can do
your step in to step over just like
normal so you can do a line to new line
hello sorry about that I just learned a
valuable lesson is there step over is
the exact same hotkey as Camtasia Studio
stopped recording so it looks like I
have a little video editing to do on
this one when I'm done anyways you do
have a built-in debugger here you can
step line by line through the code you
can inspect local values you can set
watch point you can see the stack trace
if there's a if there's a hierarchy of
calls to see how you got to where you
are huge value at the same time you can
do a little bit of performance
profiling see how things are actually
working in video memory and help debug
performance issues altogether this makes
up for a lot of decision to roll your
own scripting language so the idea that
they've built in the text editor the
code editing it's solid it's not a
terrible place to work so that's nice
and there is full debugging support so
once again the scripting the engine
which built in Python asked not that
hard to learn you're going to be working
in the Godot engine editor pretty much
exclusively you're not going to want to
go off and edit in sublime text or
notepad plus plus or whatever you prefer
place to be is but working here isn't a
terrible place to be there is a debugger
there is code completion there is
finally place there is all those things
you generally need so it's not such a
bad deal so yeah that's basically the
gist of it you create your world you lay
it out as a hierarchy of C nodes you can
then why are those up but just go back
here so I could simply pick whichever
node i wanted and i can attach a script
as simple as clicking that at the same
time there are instancing so you can
create multiple instances of the same
thing and then there's also event wiring
mostly used for UI things so you start
receiving events on most clicks and so
on or world level events or whatever but
you can wire up events to work with
certain NDS now one last thing I'm going
to touch on here before moving on is as
I mentioned earlier there are a lot of
nodes built in and here they are and
there are literally a ton of them a lot
of it is UI stuff derived from this
canvas item is your drawable stuff
control is your UI widgets and as you
can see there are a very good selection
of UI widgets built in using them as a
matter just click create place in the
world wire it up hit code-behind
write the script no 2d is your non
widget mostly your 2d game entities and
you look down here you've also got
things for like kinematics which is your
physics and movement stuff rigid body
again physics static body for physics so
you got your physics integrated right in
camera collision masking
and joints for your physics particles
passing ray casting there is a very
impressive sound playing tilemap
including as you can see here isometric
or perspective or orthogonal it's got an
impressive amount of stuff built in node
wise and then we get down here to fatal
and this is our spatial this is your 3d
stuff a lot of the same things you're
seeing in the 2d world just the 3d
version of it and then finally you have
things like an animation play oh no
that's 3d still there is a media player
though streaming video streaming audio
tweening there are nodes for just about
everything and if you've worked again
like in a construct kind of environment
you're used to building with building
blocks well those are your building
blocks are all here and they're all
nodes now at the same time if you are
the C++ step you're sitting out this is
C+ engine why the hell can I work in C++
well if you really really want to you
can't and you just go out the process
not going to go into it here I'll cover
it a little bit and there's some sample
code in the the text version of this but
the process I'll describe it here now
and more or less it just as a matter of
you implement your cpp and dot H file if
you're inheriting from no 2d you are you
can literally create any of the
properties that go down here you were
whatever you make is visible on screen
on top of that you have to create you
register your type you bind your
properties that you want visible and
finally you make it available to scones
build manager and it is now available as
a module so if you want to write this
stuff in C++ code if that's your
preference you very easily can the code
is quite simple and it's first-class
citizens so everything as I understand
everything in the editor was built on
top of it so you should be able to find
thousands of examples right in the
source code itself because it is all
built on itself so you can extend
anything you want and if you need to
drop down to the C++ level you very
easily can as I said earlier also the
build process is very simple if there is
if there is a requirement to see it let
me know in the comments and I will
actually do a walk-through
of building a C++ module and building
the entire thing in C++ itself but you
can quite easily extend modules to your
heart's content and that is how you
build your your game either you can
extend it out in GD script or you can
create new ones in C++ and implement
them in JD script it's a very powerful a
very quick system you probably should
stay in GD script if you can help it
it's you should drop to C++ more for
absolute performance requirements or if
you are trying to integrate a
third-party library Godot took the
attitude of we won't implement third
party stuff if we don't have they want
to keep the dependencies as minimal as
possible so you won't find a thing a lot
of things like box 2d integration or
bullet integration or various like
SpeedTree or whatever a lot of third
party libraries have not been
implemented so if you wanted to tie
existing dependencies in yourself you
would generally drop down to the C++
level to expose them and then use djidi
djidi script to actually implement them
but that is the basics of how the coding
process works it is an impressive engine
and one of those things that I actually
always do when testing an engine out is
to see what the 3d process is because
that's where they often fall on their
face and let's go right here here's your
3d world once again it's a matter of and
I can scribble because I have an example
loaded but it's a matter if you create
your nose you drop them in so you create
a scene node you drop it in so on and so
forth and one thing I always like to see
is how much work is it to get a 3d
application 3d model textured into this
program without fault so I did that
again with goodell right off the hop and
I installed their plugin so matter of I
didn't save it to I and so I think I
need to configure it anyways so just
come on in you copy the plug-in to the
right folder go to add-ons you go to
import/export and it's called better
colada
there it is all right you just click
that checkbox like so and done so now we
can export to their format let's create
a model quickly so edit let's unwrap
this puppy like so and texture it all
right got a material create a new
texture image create new list and we
will give it the
UV color grid default like so okay last
thing we need to do is UV map use the
generated one so I come over here I
should now have there we have a textured
3d cube in a scene with a camera and a
light so I just need to go over to my
texture for a second and show it
save our texture out and we are going to
be doing this too
you
you're in I know this makes absolutely
no sense but this is where we are we are
there now let's go ahead and export an
hour better colada format only thing you
really need to make sure you check is
triangulate and then once again come
back up here
locate it
we will export it as untitled okay so
now we have a 3d model head up over here
to the import menu and one thing I
didn't really touch on there are a lot
of tools hidden behind the scenes things
like texture importers faut importing
these basically everything here has a
bit of the tool attached to it that can
do quite a bit but what we want to do
here is import a 3d scene we just come
in we grab our scene target path will be
the same oh no we want it to route just
in case it cares all your file pathing
is relative to the base of your so the
file system is virtualized relative to
the base of wherever you're running
directory is as you see there are
hundreds of options you can go ahead
with for hunters might be an
exaggeration but you choose how to
compress the textures how to import it
how to change things will go ahead and
import it and open all right yeah it's
because it's already in that folder well
try to bring it in there you go 3d
object import it and
virtually identical
lender and good so getting 3d models in
fully text or 3d models is trivial
literally it's like a 2-minute process
you just saw from installing the art
configuring the importer I already copy
the files over before we got here but
you just bring in the importer exporters
Claude Pickett is triangulate on the
export and then you just import it in
and you'll notice over here that it just
kind of came in as a created a spade all
node and my cube is mesh underneath it
brought in the light from blender
brought in the camera from blender and
it brought in animations which I have
known to find so that's really kind of
not used but and once again you can see
down here you've got all your properties
that are gone controlling that mesh
instance or it's derived drama tree
interest etc that is how easy it is to
get a 3d texture model into this program
that is a test I give and I almost
always run into some stupid niggling why
the hell am i scaled down to a little
little tiny size unity
why are my textures flipped why are my
textures not showing up why is this not
animated wise and nothing so if you are
using Coolatta
as your back-end which if you're using
an autodesk product like my arm ax or
whatever you obviously are or with
blender with the exporter things just
work and that is a kind of rare beast so
if you are working in 3d bringing in
models animated models is actually quite
trivial and once again you can kind of
come through and inherit down and create
the script that controls it your logic
goes and you implement it that way so 3d
2d work awfully the same hierarchy of
nodes the tools are all here for
bringing things in nice quick done on
top your scene properties as well since
you want to see right away these are
projects that are controlling the
settings of your game as you can see
there are a lot next thing up is you've
got your input mapping this is where you
can mask string values to controls
instead of just explaining
let me just go ahead and create one I'm
you see oh I got it put something here
move right action go ahead and add that
so so we new have a new action called
move right and you see I could map it
now to keyboard events joystick
eventually most events and let's go with
key press key right arrow and save so
now I have an input map of move right
map to the right key I could go ahead
and also map that to joystick axis 3
device 1 and at and now whatever that is
when that event is triggered it will map
to the same as the keyboard so handling
multiple input devices is brutally
simple another little of those tools
it's sort of like hidden away in behind
the UI gentlemen I have found if there
is a need for it there's a tool like I
was doing fun importantly how they'll do
an import of fun and I went up to your
the import font it's like oh here we go
and then while you're in there you can
actually and see if I can actually show
you this easily bringing in a font while
you're importing it you can preview it
you can change shadowing colors so on
and so forth so there's a tool for
generating fonts it's integrated
directly in and then if you're using
something later on that requires a font
it'll just be down here properly you
click the the value of it boom you're in
aa it's very well integrated there are a
lot of tools there tucked away until you
actually need them but they're quite
powerful its gates
it's the node based nature makes it
somewhat easy to understand what you're
doing the process is probably the area
where they didn't explain it that well
like figuring out your program flow and
execution be a little bit confusing or
where these tools are or how these
things all work together but if there's
something you're like how the hell do I
do this there's a tool in there trust me
it's there somewhere you may need to dig
a bit to try figure out how to work it
but it's definitely there then finally
when you're done when you've created
your game and it's time ok I'm going to
export it what do I do you just click
the export button now I'm not going to
lie there's a lot of work here behind
the seat so let's an example I want to
export out and you see all your resource
management or your I your your assets
all together you can
trol how they're exported what they're
doing again another tool that's kind of
tucked in here for getting this stuff
export but let's go back and when I want
to do my uh my android export so I come
down here you'll see right here I got a
list of things I need to do basically
checklist of configuration it doesn't
know where ADB is so I just need to tell
the Android more or less where my my
different installations are so you're
still going to need to install the
Android SDK the BlackBerry SDK the I am
on a Windows machine so you're not
seeing it but for iOS you're going to
still need Xcode you're still going to
need a Mac unfortunately you're still
going to need to sign your code and all
that stuff but it's all tied together
into this nice little window so for each
platform your different dependencies are
here the export templates remember way
back when we talked about it there on
the downloads page so they were
available for you and then yeah it's
really all you need to do for HTML but
you just come in and then you do your
platform specific configurations here
and a new export so you just basically
you are you will have to set up the
development tool chain you will need
your key store it set for all the stuff
you would normally need for publishing
an Android application you're still
going to have to jump through those
hoops a bit but all of the configuration
and all of the even telling you what you
need to do it's all here and then this
is where the platform specific things go
Windows desktop platform specific things
here otherwise you're done export and
your game is made so that's good oh in a
nutshell once again there's a text
version of this if you prefer to go
through that or also goes read I do
cover slightly different things there
but pretty much this is the Godot engine
it's what as I said earlier but a year
old it's very very mature for being a
year on and now that's a little bit
misleading it's a year old as an open
source project I was used in-house by
the developers that open sourced it for
years and years and years to make a
number of successful commercial games so
this is a production tested product but
it has been opened up to the masses if
you're looking for a visual unity like
and once again I apologize to the
developers that made this really if that
makes them cringe but it's probably the
most apt description if you're looking
for an all-in-one editor type
environment where you drag and drop at
the top but you can jump down and dig in
and script whatever you want with a nice
component type architecture the ability
to extend and you know modify everything
to your heart's content but also visible
visual editor so you can hand it off to
designer so they could tweak and
customize layout and so on judo is
definitely one of your best choices if
you're looking for something that's open
source so I can pretty confidently say
it is the best option for what it is and
if you want to work in the C++ world
it's especially for a 2-d game this
might be the only thing that actually
ticks all the buttons again it's only a
year old in terms of being open source
so you can expect more more and more and
more and more as time goes on and
hopefully we will see some refinements
in the the reference documentation we
will see some of the UI warts go away
but as it stands now this is very easily
a production worthy game at it from
everything I've seen and the tools work
I guess I you saw me bring in a model
textured 3d file in two minutes and it
looks exactly like what it started as
and let me just say exporting things
from blender is never that smooth never
that easy so that is an impressive feat
it is definitely an engine you should
check out even if you're just playing
around it is worth seeing it always nice
to experience other tools it's not going
to compete against unreal it's just
they're they're different markets
different segments if you're looking to
make the next Triple A game dope isn't
the solution for you however if you're
looking to make a cross-platform 2-d two
and a half D or simpler 3d game is
certainly certainly something you should
check out the things I haven't even
touched on here there is shading at
shade under edges here you can import
create your shaders there are there are
