hello and welcome to another episode of
open an MS 101 a series of videos
designed to help you get the most out of
the open and immense platform
my name is tarick a log I'm one of the
project maintainers of open MS and this
video is about installing open MMS on
operating systems that use deads such as
Debian and Ubuntu well I think we're but
to switching to some new package
management system but there's a separate
video if you want to install the RPM on
to Red Hat or sent off as the procedure
is a little different
anyway there are two versions of open an
MS there's meridian and there's for
risin both of them require Java it's a
java application and the developers will
recommend that you use Oracle JDK we
require a minimum as a horizon 18 we
require minimum of Java 8 so you'll need
a Java JDK I tend to run open JDK and I
haven't seen any problems but I've been
told that on systems with very very
large monitoring requirements or you've
got tens of thousands of hundreds and
thousands of nodes you may want to you
may get better performance out of the
Oracle JDK in this case we are actually
going to install the Oracle JDK both
have a little bit of C code back in the
late 90s when open Emma started the Java
API couldn't do I sympathize and I don't
know about you but when I'm trying to
actually diagnose a network problem
first thing I try to do is ping the
device so we needed a way to do pings
and so we wrote a piece of C code called
a J ICMP also we strongly recommend that
for performance data storage you
consider using our D tool by default we
ship with a product called J Robin J
Robin is a library it was written by
this man in mark Sascha Markovic and
back in the day it performed better were
in with open MS then our D tool did um
however sasha stopped working on the
project donated it to the open and
immense project and while we've made
some changes over the years
we haven't fought
odhh all the wonderful stuff that to the
editors doing in our detail so I
recommend that you switch from the
default J robin to an RD tool the main
reason you have to make this decision
now is that the binary files that are
created with J Robin are not compatible
with our detail and so if you switch
later you'll will have to get rid of
data I mean it is possible to export an
upgrade but just trust me it's easier
from start to start using Rd tools so
that's what we're gonna do now horizon
is kind of like our Fedora and so it's
freely available we run on Debian Ubuntu
we also run on Red Hat CentOS we do
releases about every three to four
months and that's what we're going to
install here we also have a release
called meridian which is more like Red
Hat Enterprise Linux in the sense that
it's subscription-based you need a
subscription to access the code although
100% of the code is open source you need
a subscription access code and it is
currently only for rpm based districts
we are planning on doing a Debian based
destroying the future but it's not here
yet
anyway um and then sound kind of weird
but I'm actually going to just reference
the documentation so instead of copying
the documentation to a slide I figured
hey we're doing videos and I have
internet so let's go and look at the
documentation open in a master in the
past has struggled like a lot of open
source projects with either outdated or
non-existent documentation a couple of
years ago a group of our contributors
got together to really focus on our
documentation I think they've done a
great job so go to Docs and MSN organ
your land you on this page and you can
see all the different projects that we
do of course open to the mass is the
project we're going to be dealing with
we do do release specific documentation
but since this project is ongoing I
always tend to look at the development
branch because it just seems to have a
lot more stuff there's may taper off as
we put more and more stuff in the
documents but I'm going to go ahead
right now I'm going to click on this

I didn't see here's the different open
in the mess documentation we have
release notes we have an admin guide we
have developer guides etc since we're
doing an installation I'm going to use
the install guide and click on the HTML
link here on the side on the left side
you'll see a table of contents and first
thing I want to click on is this 2.2
Debian apps repository we need to tell
our debian instance where to find open
in a mess and the way we do this is by
setting up a repository file so just
following the directions it says create
a new app source file and I'm going to
copy that path I'm going to jump over
here to my debian instance and I'm going
to edit that now this is a minimal
install Debian since I am a firm
believer that you should have a
dedicated server for open at MS and you
should install a minimum version of your
operating system of choice all
software's bugs and the easiest way not
to get exposed to a particular bug is to
simply not install the software so I
only install exactly what I need now
going back to the installation guide in
that file I'm supposed to put these two
lines it copied those go here paste them
in you can follow different versions of
open in the mess there's the the
bleeding edge version that's the root of
the get tree I recommend running stable
so I'm going to change this relief
variable to reach stable now at this
point in time we now have a repository
to open in a mess so the Debian knows
where to find open unless we have
another step we need to do we need to
import an open NMS GPG key so that since
we sign all of our Deb's we need to tell
Betty Ann that it's valid so I want to
here's the command that'll get it and
add it I'm going to copy that
good paste edit here as you can see it
went out got it added it I wanted to
show you I'll get rid of this command
here you can see all that file is is a
DPG public people
now I have to run one more command I
have to do at update and this will go
and download the package index files for
our open and ms repository here so we'll
know everything other than that
now at the end you'll get this if you
use stable you'll always get this little
error you know expected stable release
but got open MS 18 just ignore it
we symlink stable to open an MS 18 and
it's it's just something you can ignore
okay now it's time to install open ms
I'm going to open a act get install open
an MS and as you can see there's a lot
of files that get installed there's the
jsap I was telling you about
we've got Oracle Java 8 going to install
we've got Postgres which is our backing
database it'll install as well as all of
the open to the mess goodies right there
so I'm going to go ahead and hit install
open an MS is fairly large on the app
itself is about 300 Meg the web server
package is about 200 Meg so it does take
a while usually it takes me about four
to five minutes on my system so what
will happen is it's going to download
all the files it's going to start
installing them and the first time it
tries to install a package it'll prompt
us and we will wait until that prompt
shows up see you okay we're back if all
the packages finished downloading the
next thing you should see is this little
pop-up that reminds you that you end up
having to run the open MS installer
manually we need to create the database
before we can run into the database
installer and we can't do that until on
the day this is created and so there's
like a catch-22
so we'll install the package but we will
not be able to create it until we
manually create the database we actually
have to just change some permissions and
we'll let it go so I'm going to hit OK
for that it's all a little bit more
since we're using Oracle's on JDK it
will prompt us for the license and I'm
going to accept the license key here
will install a whole bunch other stuff
and then it will get down and it will
take a while to actually install the
that work will JDK so we'll wait for
that to go okay the Oracle installer has
just about finished downloading the
Oracle JDK and once this is done it
should be able to unpack it and then
we'll be able to install the rest of the
packages that we need now we're
installing Postgres now we're going to
talk about we have a slide to talk about
a function called IQ like I feel like
needs to be installed in the opening the
most database but the token in the state
of it doesn't exist yet because we have
a few other steps to do and this warning
is just telling us that it's not there
we're going to end up running a command
called install lights like and once we
do that I feel like we'll be installed
so we can skip that warning and then
it's when installed open it amiss
main packages and should just be about
done
now I'm going to skip over here while
that's going on
PostgreSQL has a file called PG
underscore HB a Kampf and what that file
does is it stands for host based
authentication and it controls how you
access Postgres and by default you need
a password to access Postgres from
anything but a domain socket what we're
going to do is we're going to actually
edit this file and set the method to be
trust now this is just for people who
have access to the system through a
Sheldon system they can either connect
via local host ipv4 ipv6 or you can see
here they can connect via local domain
socket there is if you're kind of
against that if you go to the
installation guide
it will actually tell you how to set up
usernames and passwords but to be quite
frankly I'm lazy and since I severely
limit who has access to my open and
amass systems I have no problem setting
local those access to trust and but you
can follow either that you feel
comfortable with so now that we're done
we're going to go in to that that file
is telling about it's under Etsy's all
of the configuration files in Debian or
under slash Etsy so PostgreSQL version
9.4 main and if you look here the
configuration files we're going to look
at this one here PGH be a comp if you
wanted to tune your PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL instance you would edit
PostgreSQL comp now I'm going to edit on
PG underscore HB a and a comp and like I
said these three lines here that are
uncommented this is local sockets I'm
going to change that to trust like it's
spelled correctly
same thing here for md5 and md5 as I
said you can follow the instructions in
the install guide it's perfectly good
it's probably better but as I said I'm
like
so I like doing this easy way and then I
don't have to edit any other files etc
so when we start Postgres to make that
take effect okay now most of the files
on Debian for open MS are in this
directory slash user slash air slash
open an MS most of these classes unless
of these videos are going to be done on
Red Hat and they're open and MS is
stored in /opt slash open and miss a lot
of the same files are there if you just
mentally substitute slash opt for slash
user slash share or slash user slash
layer effects shot you'll basically be
in the same directory structure notice
here that slash users slash share or
slash open Hermes slash Etsy is just a
sibling at the open and a mess
because that's where Debian put stuff
logs are in bar log open in a mess the
shared directory which contains our
performance data live in bar live bar
/lib slash open in a mess so we're going
to go into the bin directory and the
first thing I want to do is set the Java
version so I'm going to run a command
called run Java - s for set and it's
going to look through the system in
well-known locations to see if it finds
a version of Java that is valid that is
Java version 8 their run against open an
MS and it found one
it's found in flush users live spin
touch Java and it stored that in a Java
comp configuration file that can be
found in / editing / open and Mastiffs I
my shed seats let's open advanced java
calm again
so you'll see importuning you can
install multiple versions of Java on
your system and then just change Java
comp to point to different ones if you
want to and then the next command we'll
run is install - D is this is what will
actually create the database and I can
run it without commands and it will tell
me what the - D and the - I the - s
flags mean I don't really remember I
just know that - D is make database
changes I is insert IP like I basically
in works fine without
and so now what we've done is we created
the database in open and a mess
the open NS database in Postgres sorry
about that now if you want to tune
Postgres here is a link to our wiki
entry on tuning PostgreSQL depending on
the number of events you have again for
this class we don't need to make any
tuning things we're not going to be
monitoring that many different devices
but if you want if you're if you're
monitoring tens of thousands of devices
or dealing with hundreds of thousands to
millions of events you may want to your
database and you may even want to move
Postgres on to its own server quite
frequently the biggest performance issue
openness runs into is contingent over
the disk as we're writing performance
data and writing logs and Postgres is
writing transaction logs you may run
into a problem so if you can stick
Postgres on a separate server that's
probably a good idea now we set up over
2m s with our run Java - s and we're an
installer now if I go back I want to
look at some of the output so let me
jump up here so the very end of the
installation do you need to do you'll
see this phrase inserting PL p s PG SQL
idea like function IP like is not
useable here because we've installed it
and you can use the one we wrote in
Postgres scripting language it's just
not brave it's not as efficient so I
strongly recommend that you install if
you like but again we came install if
you'd like until the database exists so
we'll install that and the other thing I
want to point out is that there is no so
this is the very top you'll see that
there is no Rd integration so it'll say
you know failed to load the optional
library fail to load the optional
this is a open honest work of NMS will
work and run Jay Robin but I really want
people using more details so we're going
to show how to do that in a second too
so first let's fix I if you like so if
you can remember from the pop-up you'll
see that there's this install IP light
command right here and boom it just
created the function now it runs I can
run the Installer again you can run as
many times as you want you can even
downgrade the database if you want and
now when I install it and go to the very
end you'll see it says is I feel like
usable yes so we know that it's using
the binary version of IP line next we
want to install jRD tool so I'll do a
app get install jrd tool - this is a new
version of our jrd rrdtool integration
that's multi-threaded it's recently been
rewritten it's very very efficient so I
strongly recommend that you install it
and as you see it will also still are
detailed minimal install here so I
didn't install our detour to begin with
now in order to get our D tool running
there's a configuration file we have to
change now I've mentioned that all of
the open an MS files live in user share
open in a mess and the configuration
directory is Etsy so I'm going to slash
user slash layer open and my setting
which is a symlink - / sv / open in the
mess
whatever you feel more comfortable using
you can and as you see this terms of
files here and the file I'm interested
in is called rd tool properties so if I
look at Rd configuration screaming Rd
configuration approximately let's put
that up here I'm going to edit Rd
configuration on properties now it's a
very top of the file you'll see these
three lines that start with an O I want
to remove the comment so all these
little hashtags are comments and so this
will actually turn on our multi-threaded
Rd strategy so all I have to do is
change those three lines
or ago but in the strategy class
interface jar and in the library itself
so I will store that and I'm good so why
don't we install if you're like I feel
like allows us to do really really cool
things like if I wanted to see all the
devices in the 10.10 dot one network I
could do ten that 10 dot one dot star I
can do a range of addresses it's just a
really cool little tool that will use it
a lot of filters when we talk about
filters and rules moving forward in
these lessons now once I feel like is
installed all we have to do is start
open in a mess so I'll do service open
it and start let's take a while the
initial start of open NMS takes probably
the order of about 60 seconds but we're
almost there almost done so once this
comes up what we're going to end up
doing is connecting to this server on
port 80 nine eighty and it will allow us
to access the open and ms maybe why okay
now to access the web UI I bring up a
new tab and since I'm not on localized
if you're running open an MS on a
virtual machine with the graphical user
interface you can go to localhost colon
8080 but I'm not I'm running on a
virtual machine that I've SSH into and
so I happen to know that it's one twenty
two twenty dot one dot one thirty three
and I'll add : eighty nine eighty for
the port and when I do that boom I've
got my um I've got my user interface and
now I type in admin and admin top secret
password and ahead login remember that
if you get here you know you've got open
MS installments running um one last
thing before we in this lesson is we
want to the next one is that we've added
this new thing where
we gather information from Oban ms
installs it's kind of like the the fan
club in in debian i want to show you
what we get sent we give the number of
alarms number of events number of
interfaces monitoring services nodes the
sis object IDs this lets us know what
equipment our users are using so that we
can better support them and then the
operating system that's pretty much all
we get and so I want to click op in here
and now periodically I think it's once a
day it'll send that information to a
website called stat open to the medford
org is SSL so it's encrypted so if I go
to stat stuff up in the Masad org you
will see that we've had over the last
seven days under eleven hundred and
sixty seven installs and this tells us
we're monitoring about two hundred
twenty one thousand nodes seven
eccentric Center this is very very
helpful for us quite frequently just
writing open and as we don't really uses
it we don't know if people find it
valuable and this gives us some feedback
so we appreciate it if you choose to opt
in we realize that a lot of you can't if
you ever opted to want to change it you
can go into this admin menu and click on
configure open an MS so you scroll to
the bottom you'll see this data choices
link under additional tools and that
brings up the same pop-up we had before
and you can either opt in or opt out so
you can turn that off we appreciate it
but anyway that's it you should have
open MS installed and running or
embedding so check out the further
