formula that you live by and that you
advise other people to follow is that

I don't just advise I command that they
follow my formula and nobody else's yeah
I'm not really allergic to the to the
word formula there's a lot of
consultants and other people who do what
I do are sometimes because I just think
a formula to me is a prescribed way of
doing something to get the same results
every time
and structure is designed to get the
same result every time and that is to
maximize the emotional experience of the
reader of the script and eventually the
audience but of the reader and it's it
simply just means the sequence of events
how do you arrange the sequence of
events in the script to keep the
audience emotionally involved in the
story and the characters so I have a
particular way that I approach structure
it divides story into six basic stages
but Chris Vogler has a way that's built
on Joseph Campbell's approach to myth
and John Truby has a way that he's
designed that as 22 steps and Eric Edson
has a few more steps in what he calls
the story solution and they all work
they're all good it's just the door we
come in to look at the deeper issue and
that is are you creating the peaks and
valleys of your story in a way that
keeps the audience involved keeps the
audience inside those characters and
experiencing the movie but it's
absolutely critical I agree
