video production basics this time we're
talking about lighting and how to
properly light a video shoot when you're
planning your shoot it's important to
think about lighting and the reason is
simple lighting makes or breaks the
quality of the video whether using a
lighting kit or using available light
it's important to know about three point
lighting this is a basis for lighting
all indoor videos the main light source
the strongest light is the key light the
key light is near the camera and
slightly to one side the second source
of light is a fill light place this
light on the other side of the subject
to soften most of the shadows this light
is generally half the power of the key
the final light in three-point lighting
is a backlight or hair light this helps
separate your talent from the background
if you shoot in the shop or in a setting
where you need to show something
important in the background be sure you
have enough light on the background so
it shows up clearly on the camera
ideally the lighting for the rest of the
shop or special background would be a
crumb a professional lighting kit not
just overhead lights if you're shooting
outdoors your key light will most likely
be the Sun shoot during the morning or
late afternoon with the Sun behind the
camera into one side this avoids having
your subject look directly in the sun
and you don't really need a backlight
when shooting outdoors however you
should use a reflector as a fill light
you can find a 40-inch professional
reflector online for 50 bucks or less a
good alternative is a large piece of
white poster board you can use a
reflector of the poster board to bounce
the light from the Sun onto the darker
side of your talent if you don't have a
professional lighting kit at your
disposal we have a few tips for making
the most of your available light most
video shoots occur during the day even
if you're indoors you can take advantage
of the Sun depending on how your
building is situated you might be able
to use sunlight from a window or doorway
it's so light your subject using only
that light here's an example of a shoot
where we open a bay door and use diffuse
sunlight on a cloudy day to light our
subject and it looks amazing it doesn't
always work this well for us and it may
not work for you every time but it's
definitely worth trying if sunlight is
not an option
by some hardware store lining that you
may already have work like to put a lot
of light out and clamp lights can help
fill you may think your shop or office
has good lighting the best way to find
out is to shoot some test videos in the
locations you're thinking of shooting
