we're going to talk in this video about
getting the best audio for your video
production with all the advancements of
DSLR cameras making good looking videos
never been easier unfortunately the
audio is often an afterthought and left
a chance the first step is picking the
right microphone in most cases the audio
you capture is going to be someone
talking let me say now you should never
use a microphone built into your video
camera for recording a person speaking
no matter how expensive your camera is
it's best to use what's called a
lavalier mic attached to the person
speaking the microphone is specifically
designed for recording the human voice
clip the mic on the clothing about six
inches from the speaker's mouth this
avoids picking up most room noises or
anything in the background that's not a
part of the video there are two types of
lavalier microphones wired and wireless
a wired lavalier has a long cable that
plugs into your camera the price range
for a good wired lavalier mic can range
from thirty dollars to around a hundred
dollars for a wireless love you could
spend a hundred dollars for a cheap one
to over a thousand dollars for a really
nice one another type of microphone is a
shotgun mic the prices of shotgun mics
vary from less than a hundred dollars
for a basic model to up to a couple of
hundred dollars you can expect to pay
more for better sound quality now that
we've looked at a few different kinds of
mics let me demonstrate the different
sound quality you can expect from each
of these mics for the first part of this
video we've been using our wireless
lavalier mic we use it mostly because of
its flexibility and sound quality the
other advantage of a wireless system is
the freedom your speaker has if he needs
to move around now we switch to the
wired lavalier mic the one we're using
for this test is a thirty dollar
microphone you'll probably notice a
slight difference in the quality my
voice but not much else finally we've
switched from the wired lavalier to the
shotgun mic on the camera we made the
switch you most likely notice not only a
decrease in the quality of my voice but
you're now hearing all the ambient sound
in the room the change in my voice is
because the camera and the mic are about
four feet from me that means the mic is
picking up my voice as it bounces around
the room and it gives it a more hollow
sound it's always a good idea to have
someone monitor
headphones while you shoot to make sure
there aren't any weird background noises
going on while you're recording most
cameras have a headphone jack for
listening as your record if any
background noises are heard it's best to
stop and fix a problem before you finish
