so back to the mask brush so this is
mask pin I'm gonna turn it back to dots
and alpha off and with a mask pin
selecting and you can drag on there and
my focal shifts at negative a negative
100 when I hold it to control so it's
actually a very very fine precise mask
outline so I actually I don't even need
to sharpen that much because it's
already kind of sharp
I can certainly blur it and then sharpen
if I want to yeah depending on if you
like that or not you can keep it at
negative a hundred or you can change it
back to zero and it'll kind of feel like
the regular mask brush but let's keep
going back through the mask options so
we've got mask pin which is what we
started out with which again is mask pin
and then mask rectangle with the pin and
again you can hold down control and
actually here's nothing you can hit
spacebar just like in Photoshop if you
start dragging out a rectangle like uh
you know what actually one of the masks
up the middle hit spacebar that'll move
this around and then you know what I
want to hold down alt and get rid of
that and then if I want to match that up
again I can hold down spacebar move that
around and then I can move it over one
width so here here hold on alt and kind
of do that then kind of clean up your
mask a little bit if you don't like
these can just drag those all the way
out and if you only want half of this
one dragged out of control square out in
your document then hold down alt and
then control square go get rid of that I
guess and all sorts of cool things you
can do but that is mask pin that's a
functionality of the mask pan with the
dodge stroke now the other ones in here
are interesting so let's go to mask
circle and math circle is pretty much
what it says it is you hold down control
and you start dragging it doesn't matter
if you drag over your object or off your
object it's still gonna drag a circle
now you can drag an ellipse out because
there's some options we need to do but
let's say we drag over our object and
let go and go to the back because it's
going to drag all the way through if you
don't like that control hold on alt and
anything within that that perimeter of
that masking here is going to be
unmasked and if we want to unmask the
middle of these circles which we can do
is hold down control drag out a circle
you can match it up if you want then you
can make it smaller hold down alt and
all that good stuff now let's say you
wanted to make a perfect circle hold
down control go to math circle
which basically one of our to break this
down well let's talk about it so here's
math circle all math circle is is
basically a circle stroke and no alpha
if we take the circle stroke and you're
gonna see we have square and Center
options in here if you change it to
square what that'll do is force it to be
a one to one ratio circle so that's cool
and if you go into stroke and you turn
on center what you can do is start in
the center and drag out and that'll just
drag from the center area which is cool
and then you hold down alt and get a
perfect circle same thing if you do from
the side here you can drag out a one to
one from the center of your stroke so
start here drag it out start here drag
it out and there you go but basically
all that is if you deconstruct math
circle all it is is basically I think
it's a mask pin with a circle stroke and
under that circle stroke if you do
square and Center on and you mask it's
gonna mask a circle from the square and
from what with a one to one ratio from
the center so see how it's mask pin but
it behaves exactly as math circle
because I think all they did is just
make a mask pin give it these stroke
options and then gave you the option to
go in here and just say hey you know
what I don't want to change a bunch of
options from mask pan I want to leave
that alone let me use math circle same
thing for the rest of these mask brushes
it's basically just a mask brush with
some built-in options and it makes it
just easy for you to go in here and
choose these I don't think you guys
won't have mask concave and Mexican
backs as our custom but the rest of them
you will so let's sing or change our
mask pin back to what the default is
we'll take the mask pin and we'll go to
stroke we'll make it dots and we'll turn
off actually before we do us change
circle will turn off square turn off
Center just in case changes back to dots
and now it behaves is just a normal mask
pin that I can now do a drag rect up
here if I want to with mask pen so
moving right along I hold down control
so we've done mask pain and math circle
mask curve is when we get into clip
curve and stuff you'll know what these
lines I mean we'll get a little bit
deeper into this but for now
hold on ctrl and drag it drags out a
line and just like when I was doing the
rectangle I hit spacebar I can move this
line around and then if I just drag it
across my object you see what that
gradient how it starts from dark at the
line and then kind of gradients out that
means everything
that line towards the where the gradient
fades will be mass so if I let that go
it's going to mask that whole side so
you can use that to your advantage you
can just drag out a line here you can
move it around let go and I'll mask from
that straight line out now there's a
couple more cool things you can do with
this you can hold that control and then
if you tap alt one after you get a
position with spacebar just let it go
and then tap alt once now to give you a
little busy a curve you can go in here
and mask it out like that and then you
can go to the side here if you want to
hold down control tap alt once and then
hold down alt before you let it go and
then I'll actually do a unmask from that
point so I can hold down control drag it
around hold down alt that'll unmask go
to the front view tap alt once
give it a nice Bezier curve use spacebar
to kind of position it hold down alt and
let go and you can do very very complex
masking with the mass curve as well as
if you hold on control drag out your
line use spacebar to position it now if
you do if you tap alt twice instead of
just once you go alt and then drag
that'll give you a sharp line sing go to
the side here and tap alt and then hold
down alt you can unmask it with a sharp
line as well as you can mix them and you
can match them so you can go down
control and you can tap alt once and
give you a nice curve and then tap all
the gain and just kind of get a nice
curve around here or you can hold down
control tap alt twice to get a sharp
curve sharp sharp and that's it you know
what let's go to smooth tap alt once
bezzie a buzzy a busy a tap all twice
sharp you can kind of mix and match how
you want to do that same thing when we
get to clipping and stuff but yeah so
control spacebar to move it around
tap alt once to busy a curve tap alt
twice to sharp curve as well as if you
hold down control and hold down shift
it'll actually snap to angle increment
so you can see if they're angle:145 140
110 95 6040 you can snap to different
angle increments here and then you can
hit alt twice mask it out all that good
stuff so that's the basics of mask herb
and again all that is the mass brush
with the curved stroke and then you have
mass curve moving right along
hold down control and change that now
I'm holding back control and with
control held down then I can go into and
grab these mask brushes you can also hit
B and maybe and your masks are in here
so if you go b m and just moving around
a lot down the line let's do mask lasso
next it's gonna say hey the brush that
you have for the masking brush will be
changed to mask lasso and if you want to
skip that warning until next time you
restart z brushes hit that so now when I
hit control I have mask lasso selected
so that's two different ways you can
select masks and even though the other
modifier brushes is just you can hit you
can go into the brush menu and grab it
and it'll say hey next time you use this
it'll be used for the masking or you can
hit control go up here and just select
it and it'll be narrowed down just to
your masking brushes so it's kind of up
to you I prefer those method hold on
control and go up in here or you can
assign a hotkey to a mess brush so if I
hold down control I'm in mask lasso and
basically that's in mask brush with the
lasso stroke selected and all that is is
just like you would think it's a lasso
that you can drag out and mask so you
can go here mask lasso around and then
go here and then hold down alt and
that'll unmask in that area and you can
start from the middle of an object here
so you can mask this area out and then
you can sharpen that up and then you can
unmask this area and sharpen that up
which is just again ctrl alt and tapping
your object so it's kind of up to you
next in here is mask rectangle which is
the you know when you're in the mask pin
mode and you just kind of drag out here
to make some mask rectangle mask
rectangle
we'll do a mask rectangle even if you're
on the object so there's that and just
like the circle one if you want to make
it square
and Center just choose those options and
then it'll drag out a rectangle with
those options and moving right along
that's gonna cave in math convex we
won't get into yet and those are custom
anyway so that's the basics of masking
so now that you're able to do that you
can go ahead and combine masking as well
as alphas so if we go
mask rectangle with an alpha you can
mask rectangle with a brush alpha but
since you already have access to a drag
rect with a mask pin you can also do an
alpha with a drag rec with math spin and
do the exact same thing only you'll want
to change your focal shift down to
negative 100 to make sure it doesn't
fuzz out around the edges alpha off dot
stroke and now that you can start mixing
and matching
if you mask an area out and we haven't
really done this yet I'll change the
focal shift back to zero here so if we
mask an area out say this area in this
area and then you use the standard brush
it will just leave those alone now your
mask intensity is actually controlled by
your RGB intensity and I don't use this
a whole lot but because it's there you
can you can maybe use this changes mask
RGB intensity 215 and then do a drag
rect
it should and then maybe drag rect on
here yeah it looks like mask rectangle
does it all the way it's kind of
difficult to kind of fine-tune
so really oh that's because the RGB on
the mask panel to change so if I hold
down control so I don't care about the
RGB on my standard Russian turn on/off
hold down control and then change my RGB
intensity let's change that to like 10
and then mask yeah so see that's only
10% and then if I mask again
20% 30% 40% and now we're finally up the
mask half towards the middle so now if I
take my standard brush and just run it
across there you're gonna see it kind of
has Grady gradient of masking
intensities same thing if I want to use
my hold on control with the RGB
intensity it's just gonna mask at 10%
unless I sit here and do this a lot so
you can kind of build up and feather
your masking so you can kind of mask 10%
and then towards the middle you can hold
down control and crank your RGB
intensity up and kind of mask it a
little bit harsher towards the middle
and then as you drag across it it'll
kind of fade out your intensity here
again I don't use it a lot but if you
have a use for that that's cool
actually just keep it at 100 and then so
now you can mask you can invert that
mask you can use like say you can use a
clay brush to kind of build this up or
one thing I like to do is use the move
brush so I'll go into the move brush
here and you can kind of move stuff out
as well as something we haven't gotten
into yet but you can go in here and do
like math something invert that mask and
then you can use transpose which we'll
get into next to kind of move stuff
around so a lot of different cool things
you can't with masking and of course
when you're in dynamesh mode if you're
masking something then you want to read
einem as you get a control drag to
unmask and then control drag again to
dynamesh and then it'll update your your
dynamesh so just keep that in mind
