How to Solo with Major Guitar Chords Video Lecture - The Ultimate Guitar

throughout your life you're going to
stumble upon certain landmarks that
you're going to use to measure where you
are at that point in time like your
first kiss your first job the first time
you fired from Guitar Center for
refusing to be clean-shaven even though
the guy in / audio it has a tattoo of a
spider on his face but did you know that
the fretboard on your guitar also has
landmarks that will help you kind of
understand it so today we're going to
use major chords scales and arpeggios to
kind of link together little pieces by
using what I let's call landmarks right
so basically the example that we're
going to use is going to sound something
like this all right and all that is is
I'm cycling through three different
chord voicings and playing them
individually now that's just pretty
bare-bones
demonstration of it there's really no
limit to what you can do once you start
thinking in different landmarks for the
fretboard and we're just gonna be
started with this a major four okay so
you can play as a barre chord you can
play it with your fingers like this but
it's open a - D - G - B and then open E
if you can get it right so basically
we're doing this for thinking in the key
of a alright and if you see if you've
seen some of the other videos we've done
major arpeggios where like you today
what it would sound like this okay so I
really just real quick to review that
one it's just open to four on the a
string you go the a string and then
you're making your way to its major
third which is a c-sharp a major third
is always four frets higher than the
root note on any same string which we're
going to get more to later but basically
that's open for 2d alright this is the
fifth of the chord and E a B C sharp d
sharp e alright open to four do you knee
down a string and we're do the same
thing this is another a
so another two frats on their whole step
whole step into its major third and
we're going to end on the fifth fret of
the B string which is another e all
right so now you'll also notice that
we've talked a lot about relative minor
in some of these videos and the relative
minor of a is what you can always find
out by going three frets backwards so if
a is the fifth fret on the E string we
go to an f-sharp so that that's sharp
minor pentatonic scale something's going
to come in handy too now if you notice
when you went through that arpeggio
there's a lot of overlap so it doesn't
really matter if you're thinking in the
relative minor pentatonic if you're
thinking in chord tones or thinking and
voicings
it doesn't matter because they're also
different ways to get you to start
thinking of the same notes along the cut
board right and the way we're going to
start using landmarks to tie this
together is from a chord voicing so we
have this a major chord voicing now if
you add the fifth fret on the high E
string
that's another a okay now it seems like
a super reach to kind of add that note
in there but we don't even have to play
this note I'm just thinking of this note
as a landmark because okay three frets
higher than this chord voicing you can
take me the fifth fret now this is where
that a is major Barre chord exists or is
to try it like an f-sharp professor an
effing F major triad and right here this
is an a 5d 6070 so we're gonna start
tying all this together right so we can
start with this a chord
and I'm just doing two - for the D
strings before on the g string which
maybe I'm thinking of that from the
minor pentatonic and then we slide into
another position where do I get that
from I got that from then a major
arpeggio that we started here two four
six five right and that kind of brings
me into maybe what I see as that
landmark the fifth fret where that triad
chord the s-shaped triad chord exists

all right so I'm just going through
carpaccio's scale shapes I can slide
back into it knowing and then I can
always go three frets higher than where
my original board was and that's going
to give me the next voicing I'm going to
now is the voicing after this we're
going to go to is going to be another
major third higher so now if I'm
thinking of my ring finger the seventh
fret on the D string as an a again the
names the notes of not essential for
this really and II do know if I go a
major third higher on the same string we
talked about this for press right so I
can slide this four frets higher 4 7 7
plus 4 is 11 now if I have that same
shape but I switch my middle finger and
my index finger so now I have 11 D with
my ring finger 9 G with my pointer
finger and 10 B with my middle finger
that's another inversion of an a major
chord in fact if you like using those
chord shapes that would be like a C
major shape starting on an a okay but
we're thinking of it as a way to get
from this triad
this try edit your not play some chords
you can play using ticket and down right
so we've got a chord defender tonic
arpeggio and do a chord voicing and do
another chord voicing and that's just a
bunch of a stuff going on you can do
this for absolutely any major chord
let's do like C so C major chord to be
like if it is a double bar chord way
these are rooted on the third fret of
the a string or we just walk the same
exact thing exercises up a a sharp V B
to the fifth fret now everything that we
did it can be repeated not just like the
f-sharp minor pentatonic what would have
been a major we're in C and you probably
already know that a minor pentatonic
goes there so now I have C and then you
do the same thing
landmark it right so my pinky is lining
up with what's another eighth fret three
frets higher and where I started so I
can throw that triad down there and then
I can go a major two-tire from here the
test for either D string into the fourth

and to my next C or just like that so I
think this is especially handy when
maybe you're kind of improvising sewing
over a chord progression and you only
have like a limited amount of time it
can be any kind of chord progression you
can go IKEA any time you see a major
chord you can just find a spot no matter
where it is if it's G major G major is
really easy because it's just the open G
and B strings right take that everything
just moves down you go this via this G
division all it is is just cycling
through those chord progressions going
on my major third higher and then taking
you back to where you started up and to
you know different pentatonic shapes you
don't have to use that one you can make
up any kind of pentatonic lick or
arpeggio lick that you want but it's
just a good way to start thinking of
major chords throughout the fretboard
and how to connect different voicings
using kind of like a landmark system I
really like the one where you have that
kind of bar board and then three frets
higher gets you an in event spot alright
so anyways definitely start combining
those with some of the minor ones we did
