hello this is music tech help guy and
welcome to episode 31 of my Logic Pro 10
video tutorial series in this episode
just I'm going to do a short video just
to show you how to use the MIDI input
filter in logic MIDI input filters
essentially allow your DW to ignore
certain types of MIDI messages and you
may be asking why would I ever want to
ignore an incoming message coming from
my MIDI my MIDI controller there's
there's a number of reasons the two big
ones I can think of our one you have an
older or maybe defective or broken
controller that's sending erroneous
messages or faulty messages but you
still want to be able to actually use
the controller or to you there's a
certain type of message on the
controller that you don't use regularly
and it keeps recording that
unintentionally a one example I can
think of as after touch pretty much
every time you play the keys on
aftertouch keyboard you're going to send
after touch messages regardless of
whether you want to use them or not so
let's start with the first scenario I'm
currently working with a axiom 49m audio
keyboards the first generation it's a
good keyboard but it's old and I have
other keyboards as well but this one in
particular has had coffee spilled on it
said water and beer spilt on it said
food sat on it and over the years it's
just you know some of the consumer the
controls on it have gotten faulty the on
this particular controller there are two
particular controls that are causing
issues one is the pitch Bend and two is
one of my fate errs is unintentionally
sending both of those are both
unintentionally sending messages or at
least I don't want them to be to be
sending messages the way we can observe
that is actually you can see it going on
right now is up here in the MIDI monitor
there you go that right there I am not
touching the pitch Bend but that control
right there
is saying that the pitch Bend is sending
a MIDI message that control that just
flashed there the problem with this is
that my synthesizers I find are
constantly out of tune when I plug this
keyboard and just try to play with it
the problem with that is that the pitch
Bend is continuously sending erroneous
messages causing my synth patches to be
at a tune so see if I can of course when
I try to do the video it doesn't want to
do it but it's sending erroneous
messages so and if I move the pitch Bend
you'll hear it actually does work but
the problem is it's sending erroneous
messages as well so let's turn that off
so the way you turn this off is you go
up to file and then from file you go to
X project settings then you go to MIDI
and from here you go to the input filter
tab so you'll see there's a number of
different messages that we can turn on
or turn off here you can actually turn
on or off notes if you want program
changes which are like synth patch
changes not really going to be much of
an issue unless you're using a hardware
synth pitch Bend obviously we want to
turn that off
control changes those are your
continuous controllers that we took a
look at the previous videos that will
include our erroneous fader that keeps
sending volume changes even though I
don't want it to send message send
messages and actually it just did it
right there and if you saw that there
you go it just bumped my volume up to +6
even though I didn't intend for it to do
that
so that'll fix that and that aftertouch
is here as well as polyphonic aftertouch
the difference between aftertouch and
polyphonic aftertouch is that with
aftertouch when you press a key BAM and
then you press harder you get
an extra message kind of built into the
key pressure and I mean it all depends
on this the synth patch you get set up
in logic as well you know if the synth
doesn't respond after touch well you're
not going to hear anything but with
regular after touch basically whatever
key you play if you're playing multiple
keys on the keyboard whatever key you
play that you're pressing the hardest
will actually be sending the after touch
message while ignoring the other keys
you're playing with polyphonic
aftertouch every key you play can have
its own after touch value and then
lastly system exclusive messages or
sysex messages are typically
manufacturer specific messages where
maybe you'll have like a specific
control for one specific hardware device
that controls a specific effect you know
and so they're different for every
single device the good news is that
you'll if you have a typical soft synth
soft synth and MIDI controller set up
you'll almost never have to worry about
them they're almost exclusively for
hardware devices so in hardware sense so
what I'm going to do is I'm going to
just for now turn off pitch Bend and
control changes and now you think okay
you're you're checking the box that
means you're turning it out no that
means that you're filtering those so now
even when logic receives a pitch Bend
message or a continuous controller
message it will not react to it at all
so what I'll do first is I'll play a
note and then I'll move the pitch Bend
so you can see that it's actually it's
it's saying it's receiving the pitch
Bend message there all the way down to
zero all the way up is 127 but it's not
actually affecting the sound at all
secondly if we go to our fader here and
I go and try to move that fader now I'm
moving it nothing's happening so let me
just reset that back to zero there so
now we don't have to worry about that
fader jumping around unintentionally now
after touch after touch is another
message I typically like to hide
I like the input input filter that is
because I don't I don't really use it
that often and it really becomes more of
a just something extra there that I
don't want to be there so as I said
before after touches when you can play a
key and then play harder to get an extra
effect you know there's basically means
that your keys react to key pressure and
you'll see it up there in the MIDI
monitor so when I record something round
you'll see all these little black bars
on the region and those essentially are
recording my after placement of my after
touch and if I open this up in the the
MIDI editor down here the piano roll
editor now we open it up in MIDI draw
like we learned in the last couple
videos you'll see your channel pressure
by the way channel pressures just
another way just another name for after
touch and you'll see all your after
touch data down here so a way for logic
to ignore that would be to go in to file
project settings MIDI and go to input
filter again and then just turn off or
turn on rather the after touch and
polyphonic aftertouch
so even though I can still press the key
down and press harder to engage after
touch it still realizes I'm playing
after touch but it's not actually it's
not actually recording or actually using
that message for anything all right so
that's how you use MIDI the MIDI input
filter originally I planned on showing
this in one of the previous two videos
but just ran out of time those videos
are really long so I just decided to do
the short video just for this and by the
way if you're wondering how to get to
the MIDI monitor here you just have to
make sure that the LCD display up here
is set to the custom setting so I hope
