Logic Pro X - Using VARISPEED to Practice Video Lecture | Logic Pro X: A Practical Hands-on Course - Music

hey everyone this is music tech help guy
and in this video I want to show you a
function and logic called varus speed to
assist when practicing now I use this to
practice guitar but this can be done
with any DI instrument or any MIDI
instrument or even an acoustic
instrument Vera speed just allows you to
slow down or speed up the recording at
will so this allows you to practice to
your session or backing track slower get
that locked in at a slower tempo and
slowly inch up the speed an inch up the
tempo until you get to the actual tempo
and you can play it correctly this is a
proven method of practicing music I did
this back in music school just playing
to a metronome but this allows you to
stretch and compress the actual speed of
the music you're playing to so you can
actually play to your accompaniment or
your session or your backing track or
whatever it is so I've got this demo
song I've been working on and it sounds
like this

in this area right here there's a guitar
lead and it's pretty fast and I'm having
some trouble playing it up to tempo I've
got my guitar here on this track just di

and let me show you what I mean about it
being too fast for me right now

yeah I can barely keep up I need to
practice this a lot more before I'm
gonna get it right and the thing is you
don't just want to keep practicing at
the final fastest tempo you want to
start slow and work your way up to turn
on ver speed right click up here and
choose customize control bar and display
then select various speed and click OK
this icon will turn ver speed on and off
also make sure you're viewing the custom
view of the display to see these
controls there's a few different various
speed modes but the one I want to use is
speed only because it only affects the
speed not the pitch so I'll slow this
down by 30% and verus speed will make
the audio sound a bit glitchy but keep
in mind I'm just using this for practice
I'm not using this to time stretch the
audio for the final version also it's
important to practice with the metronome
so I'll make sure to turn this on

so I don't seem to have any problem
handling 30% slower
let me try 20%

okay so that still needs some work so
when you find your threshold sit and
practice at that tempo until you have it
right and then move up a little bit and
repeat and repeat until you get to the
final tempo when you get up to full
speed then you can turn off varus speed
here and then you're ready to record so
this is a time-tested proven method to
practice and master faster performances
it's not quick or easy and it can take
days or weeks or even months to master a
musical performance and yes you can just
do this with a metronome but this
actually allows you to apply véra speed
to the backing track as well so you
don't lose sight of how the performance
sounds within the context of the song I
