orders really introduces a lot of
complexity in the fulfillment center
operations there now
perhaps is the many different styles of
picking and waving of those orders which
need to be taken into consideration just
in those areas alone the layers of
complexity are really unlimited and so
as an organization you have very serious
decisions that you need to make about
how that's going to be introduced into
your operations and the effect that that
will have on your operations and then
you begin to look at the supply chain
network as a whole do you do this out of
one fulfillment center do you have
multiple fulfillment centers what's your
strategy for slotting that inventory
within the facility and how do you
address the variability and velocity in
the business what happens when they're
seasonal spikes what happens when there
is perhaps a demand from a new channel
or retail fulfillment or perhaps a
direct to business channel that
introduces itself all of these are
factors in the area of e-commerce that
as the ideas are as unlimited as the
constraints that it can put on the
business and so you need to be in a
position to make decisions and introduce
business processes that you can
continually enhance and constantly
improve to maintain your effectiveness
in your e-commerce fulfillment business
plans the complexity in dealing with
e-commerce shipments is growing simply
because of the variability in order
volumes a customer may order one item
off of your website they might order two
or more items off of your website and
the way that you deal with single item
shipments versus multi item shipments
could differ substantially the way that
you deal with significant volumes of
single item shipments or significant
volumes of multiple item shipments can
differ substantially on Monday or
Tuesday
the significant order accumulation over
the weekend you may be dealing with
significant volumes on Wednesday through
Friday you might be dealing with small
amounts of shipments your going to need
a system that has multiple picking
styles multiple waving styles
replenishment pick bin replenishment
capabilities random slotting all of
those kinds of things are required to
make sure that you can fulfill in this
growing complexity with the effective
fulfillment of e-commerce orders there
are many areas that directly impact the
operational performance of the business
that have to be taken into consideration
areas such as product velocity the
effectiveness of certain campaigns and
the impact of that on the business in
particular seasonal spikes or demand
spikes that are introduced into the
fulfillment operations
there's the slotting the warehouse
layout the decisions that need to be
made in the network as to whether that's
a single ecommerce warehouse that's
doing this fulfillment or where there
needs to be a different strategy from
multiple locations what about the
packing and shipping areas there are
considerations that need to be taken
into account there what's the strategy
for the effective consolidation of the
multiple line items on an e-commerce
order there's the different waving
methodologies for the different types of
orders which perhaps are coming into the
business at any one particular point in
time which have to be taken into account
these are all elements that really weigh
on an individual who is responsible for
the operational effectiveness of an
e-commerce fulfillment business model
the effective fulfillment of e-commerce
orders really means that the
possibilities are endless depends on the
business model that depends on the
overall strategy that your organization
has and it depends on the opportunities
that you have in front of you for
e-commerce and omni-channel growth we've

perspective how they've had to evaluate
how they pack and ship and consolidate
orders out of their facilities all of
these are areas where businesses today
can be struggling but they don't need to
be if they have the right supply chain

address what their current needs are and
then to be able to adapt and continually
improve and expand their business
processes and really hone in on what
makes their business unique continue to
differentiate themselves in their
business model and to implement a truly
effective ecommerce fulfillment strategy
the competitive landscape of e-commerce
and omni-channel really necessitates
that organizations continually look at
how they're addressing their supply
chain network in this area and how
they're introducing business processes
in this area to have effective
fulfillment of those these types of
orders and how they're not missing
opportunities that present themselves
and so this is particularly an area in

your overall omni-channel strategy where
you have to be nimble and you have to
