Primer Tutorial 3: How to Draw the Torso/Body Video Lecture | Paint Tool SAI Tutorial:Become a Design Pro - Graphic Design

hello everyone this is Butler cool and
you are currently watching the third
third video my promo tutorial series in
this episode we're gonna go over how to
draw the neck torso chest area waist and
hip sections of the body as you can see
we already have one of the six head and
hair combinations from the previous two
tutorials and we will be building upon
that in this episode first of all I'm
going to go to that pre-built head and
hair and make it a little less opaque so
that we can see what we're doing here
okay now first what we'll do is just
kind of draw tack on a neck here already
I admittedly this is already kind of a
part of the planning process that I went
through already but well oh yeah we'll
get through this okay I'm sorry I had
coffee which tends to be a the trend in
all of these videos but this time this
time I had oh my I'll go I'll go into
that after I do tutorial link okay so
this line that is true is the shoulder
line so the pose that we're actually
doing right now is a very very common
pose in which the the shoulders are
angled in one direction so and the hips
will be angled against it so it kind of
gives out that really no no this is a
good post
I like the post I don't yep okay so I
drew
I just got the angle in here make sure
we try to Center it right in the middle
of the neck and then make it so that the
width is just approximately the width of
the head for you know this this type of
proportion the proportions that I'm
drawing in or necessarily what you're
going to be drawing in but if you like
this and you can play little blips okay
oh man that I just fell apart there but
but we are still recording and we going
to make this a tutorial okay um let's
see so just for the purpose of eg
proportions and also ease of following
if you're following along if you have
the same grid paper which I'll link to
in the section below you can count how
many boxes this is which is about one
two three four five six and seven so
that's about one shoulder width for us
now we will go down a bit more let's say
1 2 3 4 5 6 a teeny bit less than the
shoulder width and then we'll make a box
so this is what I call the chest box
because it is a box and it represents
the chest I yep creative s so
now that we have the chest box and this
middle line that I draw through the
character to try to capture the gesture
or the type of pose that I'm going for
let's continue it through here
so the general body will kind of do this
thing going out there and for
proportions we'll keep counting our 6 1
2 3 4 5 6 and then 1 2 3 4 5 6 so it's
not going to be exact but drawing is
always an approximation you can never
really have your set measurements unless
you do that in which case that takes a
lot of time but it for me actually it
definitely helped when I was learning so
in between these last two points you can
draw a halfway mark but actually a teeny
bit below that that'll be the bottom of
the crotch area and while you're at you
can already erase that bottom so yep
that's for the bottom of the crashes yep
okay and now about 2 under here so about
a third of the way from the bottom of
the chest box to this middle point will
draw a little line out that's where the
hips come to their skinniest point but
we're not going to flesh out just yet
first off we will make the diagonal hip
line which will be just about
perpendicular so 90 degrees with that
section of the little gesture line that
we made there now extend these hip lines
out approximately 6 again so a shoulder
length or natural length a chest height
so that'll be about 1 2 3 4 5 6 loop
right there this one will be 1 2 3 4 5 6
and then BOOM
so we have the width of the hips right
there and keep in mind that this is
actually the bottom of the crotch so the
body goes no lower than there and if we
want to get a little more pre lining in
here draw really light lines that go off
about 45 degrees from the hip lines that
is where the hips will come
reach
the hip bone just like I was I was
concentrating okay so yeah so right
around there
if you just draw a straight not a
straight that's that's a curve but if
you just draw a smooth curve is not
gonna look right so that's what I tend
to draw there actually I don't want to
go out that much
so right around there and that is a cat
get it right okay so that goes there
well continue this down to that middle
of the hip line that we drew earlier we
can erase most of it now and then what
this is actually simulating is the end
of the ribs right here
and that's where for skinniest people
it'll the skin will kind of stay there
until the hips in which case we go on
the way back out
okay so that is just about where the
hips and you can continue these down a
bit more I think it'll be another two
tutorials so until I get into the leg
parts actually we can draw these little
lines and that's where our armature for
the legs are going to come out so I
guess what are those femurs but yeah
willful we'll do those in a future
tutorial for now we are going to move
back up to the chest area and okay first
of all we'll add little shoulder nubbins
because those tend to help me and other
people in the that what happens in this
general area yep okay so shoulder
nubbins so this I thought all the
character has her shoulder up here which
is why I drew this shoulder nub and
coming out of the top of the shoulder
and this one is down here so our general
pose will be like that and like that and
with their hand doing something over
here but we're not going to go into that
yet the main reason why we drew within
the shoulder nubbins which are little
this one's like a little triangle this
one is another triangle that's just
sticking out of the corner is because we
want to draw the boobie area okay so we
can you go about a third of the way up
from this bottom line so a third in
between here and here
and that will be where the middle middle
of the boob boobage area is and
intersection as you little he posed like
this there is some construction going on
here and not as much going here so this
general this side of her body is
stretched out on this side is kind of
scrunched in and what that does in this
particular area is makes this one
flatter so a bit more stretched out so
you don't really have that overhang that
usually see and this side will have some
overhang
are you uncomfortable yet
ah haha okay so we just got hot okay so
we are doing a blip blip you're just
eating irritation compliance um so
general general rule of thumb for the
boobage area is that basic circle ish
things not perfect circles or else
things are gonna look weird ish and the
flow of the boob area goes kind of
around there look at that like hanging
just hang in there hang in
don't hurt me people especially if
you're a girl okay um who wants to see
budgie square room oh I guess you can
see my hands going okay okay so that
that is that's the boob area and we can
kind of get rid of other parts in here
one thing that you usually don't have to
worry about too much for this section of
the body is unless you're planning on
drawing like characters will higher
version to clothing you don't have to
make this part too perfect like it's
going to be covered up with stuff anyway
so that that is about that I'm going to
go over to the head section and you race
the hair that oopsies that doesn't
appear because the body is in the way
so
yeah you know I think I think that might
be it
yeah we can draw a little bit more of
these and just for reference we can draw
in the bellybutton ish area and there
this is the bottom of the crotch so the
legs will be coming out like that but
you know we're not we're not going into
that yet even though I just did so I'm
going to use to do control-z
okay so I think that that's yep that's
about it so just in review we do the
neck first that one you're just gonna
have to guess work you can always delete
or erase things and redraw that if you
need to shoulders are about one head
length apart so head length is like that
right wait
boom boom head length yeah that's not
too much more visible but yeah that's
about head length apart the height of
this chest box is about just about the
same as the shoulder width except a
little bit less so in my case the
shoulder was seven blocks wide but it
was only six blocks tall then after you
do that it's one and a half blocks until
you reach the bottom of the groin and
then each one of these leg sections is
just about a six block thing wide
we have our 45s here you don't really
notice that too much here because
everything is all gathered in that
section but when the skin is being
pulled then you see a little more of the
skeletal structure so we got the hip
bone over there it's not it's really
subtle so all the times you don't even
have to include it and then we have our
shoulder nubbins which you know legs o
arch our legs are going to go watch the
shoulders no actually arms arms will go
into the shoulders and that's going to
be great and that will be the next
tutorial actually and remember for boo
boobage areas physics and stretching
happens depending on the position of the
body just you can always use yourself as
a model you know if you're a guy just
just ya know I'm not gonna talk about
that
so um collarbones Jupe Jupe Jupe oh that
was horrible
oh okay that was that
oh my coffee story I didn't tell my
coffee story so I got a a pour-over
coffee maker today and then I was like
I'm just going to move this without
looking at directions or how to do I
didn't YouTube it and then I was like I
made it and then I think oh this sucks
it was horrible and was drinkable I
drank it it was coffee water so I'm
going to let it to bloom into ownage
fancy coffee stuff next time but that is
not this tutorial that is a story that
is one of the attributes to why I'm
hyper and hot right now because I it's a
hot day and I drank hot coffee and that
makes sense okay yeah I think that's it
