Primer Tutorial 1: How to Draw Faces/Heads Video Lecture | Paint Tool SAI Tutorial:Become a Design Pro - Graphic Design

hello everyone this is Patricia Kuhl and
you're currently watching my first video
in my premiere tutorial series primer
meaning that this will be going over the
basic elements that define the process
that I go through to make a drawing from
the ground up
okey in this video we will be going over
how to draw the head and face along with
six basic facial expressions that will
be neutral Pleasant happy kind of EBS
angry and sad so first off or draw the
head shape
like I always we will go over not going
over anything we're strong a circle if
you want to know how I'm doing all these
tools can refer to this thing up here it
says what keys I'm pressing for pink
tool Sai at least so if you have this
program that'll be useful if not this is
more than what what was I thinking oh no
I went into the mode where I'm not I'm
not doing regular words no okay um was I
saying oh yeah you can also follow along
with paper and pencil but anyway we just
made a circle I'm actually impressed I
just
that's pretty sure oh yeah okay and then
draw a line vertically through it you
don't really have to go all the way up
to the top just from the very middle to
somewhere below a circle now if you
measure this will draw the chin line
about a quarter of the radius added to
the bottom so once you have that
we can draw the lines of the chin and
like that keep in mind that these these
tutorial videos will be going over how I
budgets are cool-guy make fine drawing
so it'll be on my style with the early
style that I've adopted over the years
so it's gonna be kind of almost GBH not
really a serious style nothing that will
fit the brooding type but more along the
cutesy lines this is happy except for
the expressions which will be all of the
expressions so Wow no I did things
without teaching what is this I drew up
to a face there's a quarter line down as
the chin we draw a line two lines for
the chin the jaw line actually they're a
little over 90 degrees from each other
actually a lot over because that's
that's 90 degrees from there but yeah
around that angle and then when you get
out here draw a lines that are just
coming off of the side of the head and
merge them with your their chin lines if
you need some extra help you can
download this grid pattern that I made
I'll put a link in the description below
where you can download and print that
out yourself or you can download it and
put it into whatever drawing program you
use
so yeah we have that now now what I'll
do is I'll erase this bottom half of the
circle and kind of ignore these marks
now and draw a line that's halfway from
the top of the head to the bottom of the
chin so that's somewhere around here
this will be the top of the eye line so
when your eyes are wide open tops will
touch that line and now in my style the
eyes are fairly huge mangas so we'll
draw a line that's not quite halfway
between top of the eyelid and bottom of
the chin so a little above there this
will be where the bottoms of the eyes
meet and lastly we'll draw the outer
bounds of the eyes so the size of the
eyes outside will touch here and then
here's where some weird proportions
happen just kind of divide this into
three spots so one eye will fit in here
another in here and then here's the
empty space we're just making sure that
the eyes aren't too close together
because then then you start getting
don't be looking characters okay so that
is the base basic head so now we will
make another one because we will save
that base put it over here because we're
gonna have six different expressions and
we'll start with our mutual expression
first do the eyes what I like to do for
my eyes I usually I start from here and
here just make it blend with those lines
so it'll be kind of vertical at the
outer bounds and then arch them together
now of course this is just my way of
drawing eyes these are the types of eyes
that I prefer I guess you could do any
kind of device that you want as long as
it matches the character that you're
trying to drop but these are just
generally how I draw mine because nice
round eyes I'll keep seeing still ooh
fun okay and how you can draw the other
side show me here and okay one thing
about these videos is that they'll be a
little shorter than my normal like 20 to
half an hour to an hour long beasts of
video set that takes a lot of attention
standard I don't even I don't have
attention span to watch my own videos
all the way through more than once or
maybe twice just for the purpose of
editing but yeah these will be pretty
short I'll actually copy and paste each
face as we go through and change certain
aspects to get the next type of emotion
that we're going for so now that we have
two somewhat similar eyelashes
we'll draw a kind of circular thing for
Baba the iris iris I should have like a
chart of anatomical terms next to me but
I don't maybe I will okay so here we
have somewhat round the eyes this is a
neutral expression so we're going to
have or not be too excited or said or
anything just kind of eyes open bottom
of the eyelids don't really touch the
bottom of the eyes so we have a teeny
bit of white space between the eye and
bottom eyelid and then we'll draw in
part of a pupil part of the pupil make a
shiny right over here
Andy right over here make sure that
they're both on the same side of the
eyes so that a little bit of continuity
in drawing and then out erased out this
part of the eye and then over here just
to make it a little pretty
let's take out part of the eye and then
kind of let it taper off there right
here that and that if you're using a
pencil it's a lot easier to blend these
together but I have to use an actual
blending tool because I'm not the best
at pressure sensitivity on my tablets
like I can pretty much go medium to
steam hard but I don't because have no I
just there's there's a blend tool so I
use it okay so those are eyes now the
noses that I draw are essentially just
that you could do your little nostril
things without that middle thing but
that's just how I do these and now just
a straight line because neutral and also
we can get eyebrows we definitely need
eyebrows that's one thing that is for me
it's somewhat easy to forget because I
don't know I don't I don't look at
humans I guess but draw them somewhat
straight horizontal
I usually draw the bottom part of an
eyebrow and then I add in the top
there'll be about almost one eye height
so this height above the top of the eye
but not quite so that is one now we will
draw the pleasant one so to do that I'll
copy it move it over here and we will
change a couple of things first of all
eyebrows or the mouth will change the
eyebrows will also change and add a
little bit of fun this with the bottom
of the eyes so these bottoms of the eyes
will make them a little up so when
you're smiling you can kind of see it in
your eyes too right because your cheeks
get moved up because you're just viola
and then happy happy happy happy now for
the amount mmm an easy way to do this
it's just go between the nose in the
bottom of the chin a little upwards
actually start from the corners of the
mouth and work your way inside
a lot of the times with artists our
style the style that anime is people use
is to have it a little bit white in the
middle just have it blend nice delicate
mouth okay and then you can add a little
bit of a lip under if you want to which
I usually do well guess what I forgot to
do you need a little bit of lashing
going on because that's always fun and
makes your character look a little
pretty or like they're going out into
places okay I got to do this one too you
know i'm backtracking redundancy don't
unsubscribe I promise I'll get better
okay what was I doing
we're going back here oh yeah and then
for this will make our eyebrows a little
bit higher and a little bit more Archie
as you can see I don't necessarily
follow the same procedures each time I
draw a face it's just whatever gets done
first gets done first and then just go
on to the next step like this time I
drew for symmetric is symmetric I can't
do words symmetries purpose
I drew the bottom lines of these lashes
before I drew Flash's eyebrows before I
drew the top sorry I'm like on a unsafe
overload of coffee right now actually
it's not unsafest just yeah just a
couple cups of coffee in the morning and
a good night's sleep I'm sorry these
were supposed to be a lot more
intelligible then it's we're turning out
to be okay so that's your last
replacement one that will go down here
well go to happy for happy we will have
pretty much everything you same except
for the mouth if we want to move these
little eyes lids up a little more more
happy happy then we can but I think
we're in a good place right now
now here we'll have the only difference
will be the mouth instead of being a
closed mouth smile we're gonna have a
open smile
for here you can complete that line
it'll be a little higher because we're
making room for at the bottom of the
mouth this time curve a little up
towards the corners of the mouth then
we'll make a mouth banana yay don't you
love about the net I smell bananas are
the best part of a balanced practice
fast sorry I'm gonna after that I need
to make them not a little bit bigger so
that it fits with the next the next
expression which is the devious one so
here we have our mouth I tend to like
adding in the teeth make sure so that
your character doesn't look like just as
gums so that's somewhere in between
there and then a good way of making it
look like it's an open mouth but only
the top teeth showing is shading in the
darker parts of the mouth
okay and also if you want to you can
poop brush it I'm sorry Mike really I
didn't take that from you but yeah
there's that look how happy she is she's
like oh nothing a little bit more
unhappy and then we're going to take a
horrible turn because she's gonna be a
little bit devious or dangerous or I
can't I couldn't really think of the
right words so I just did whatever here
we'll take out the eyebrows take out
part of the mouth well pretty much all
the inside of the mouth because we're
gonna make these all teeth so you can
draw a light line across the middle and
then once you get here you can add that
little bit of a canine thing going on
there if I take away the blushes because
I don't I don't think we need a devious
character to be embarrassed at all and
then one of the main things will be the
tops of the eyes so as I'm doing this
you probably won't be drawing all of
these at once so just kind of draw
whatever is at the beginning of each of
these drawing of these expressions so
like each component of the face so if
you want to draw like the happy one just
draw the same eyes that I drew here kind
of adjust first the oh my gosh I'm sorry
I've gotta go back to this and it's
gonna be a long video
so what I'm doing here is I'm making
that top pilots a little lower so this
is like she's focusing a little bit more
also makes it a little more sly it'll
blend these eyebrows a little bit but
what completes this expression is the
eyebrow or are the eyebrows which are
going to be
in words like that
isn't she pleasant okay so this is
I'm slightly devious character you can
add a little bit of forehead wrinkles in
there and oh yeah what a happy girl okay
now we'll go over here I'll make her mad
pretty sure when I do this the only
difference is I just make her frown make
it a little off to the side and a little
pout in there if you want to you can
make top of the lip curl up a little bit
and maybe add in some teeth marks in
there if you're doing a higher
resolution that I have a little bit over
there add a little more nose quickly and
first there's your anger lady and now
we'll go to a sad one which you know I
don't think I find this out well because
not much the same besides a slightly
frowny face which I will completely do
over again so here's the frown
just like how we did the smile will make
it a little bit delicate by making the
middle of it a lot lighter almost fading
away we'll take out the crinkles and the
eyebrows and actually yeah I think we
will be borrowing the eyes of our
Neutral face so we'll go back to our
Neutral face we will
you know I think we're just gonna take
the whole thing yeah a good planning on
budgets are cool
okay so overlay them a bit here what's
the difference
I'm confusing myself I know okay but
take away okay take this away take these
away and then I'll take this guy I'll
just take the mouth because I don't know
what the reason for that is okay there
and we'll just add in
the sad eyebrows so these going like
that
one thing that generally helps with a
sad face
is I want my drawing on right now no
combine is making the insides of the
eyes a bit hazy so you can kind of shade
in a little more make things a little
less defined in there and then also you
take out a little bit from here and here
to add in some tearing at the corners of
the eyes Oh
and then of course
you can add a little bit of forehead
crinkles in here actually I think it's
probably like not good to do edits in
these kinds of videos especially when I
just said that you can use you know
totally follow along with paper and
pencil and use your use your edit tool
in real life and your ctrl Z but anyway
yeah there there's there's that you got
our Neutral face happy face pretty much
the neutral with cap your eyes and smile
the happy face with just a smile like an
open mouth smile instead of the closed
mouth smile
devious face you turn the smile into a
teeth clenched
mmm scary thing with the eyebrows and
the eyes are a little bit different a
little bit more down and focused here
there's the same thing as the devious
face except the frown is just turned to
curled lip medicine and then our sad one
which actually probably should have been
somewhere up here which has most faces
most of the features of the matte
neutral face but eyebrows are pointing
up and about this down all right for our
next video we will be going over uh
letters and bodies and hair will add
hair to probably this face is what we're
gonna use and at the body part so yeah
that'll be all of that I think that
wraps up what we're doing so just
kidding I'm a lying liar I completely
forgot to draw ears I mean you know I
didn't forget I just so four years from
this head-on view you don't see much of
it so what I do is I start the ears up
top right around the top of the eyes and
then you kind of go in until you reach
the bottom of the nose so do that for
both sides and that's pretty much it
yeah
okay so those years will magically
appear on all the other artists thing
really and a little bitter there and
they're just random not random lines but
these are about the lines that you would
see in this position okay so there will
be ears appearing on all of these once
magically like right now okay and their
ears now let's move on except the ears
are totally gonna disappear as I finish
up the video okay bye
