Inkscape for Beginners: Simple Vector Award Graphic Video Lecture | Inkscape:Design Tutorial for Beginners - Design Softwares

this is Nick with logos by Nick comm and
in today's tutorial I'll be
demonstrating how to create this award
graphic using Inkscape and at any point
in this tutorial you could look down at
the bottom left hand side of my screen
to see which mouse clicks and keystrokes
I'm using so I'll minimize this and get
started the first thing we'll do in
Inkscape is set our view to custom and
then we'll zoom in at a hundred percent
and we'll open up our align and
distribute menu with this button over
here make sure you have last selected
chosen from that drop-down and then
we'll go to the edit objects color as
gradients and Stroke menu so the first
thing we're going to do is create a
circle so let's come over to the circles
and ellipses tool and we'll hold ctrl
and shift in the keyboard to create and
click and drag to create a perfectly
round circle like that and let's go back
to the Select tool I'm going to turn
this red for now and I'm going to drop
the opacity of that in half and then I'm
gonna grab the Bezier pen over here or
you can just press B on the keyboard to
grab it and what I'm gonna do is I'm
gonna turn on this snap the pads and
it's this little green squiggly line
right here to snap the pads and I'm
gonna take the cursor and snap it to the
edge of the circle over on the left side
we don't want it down on the bottom and
over to the left you don't want it in
the center we want it off to the left a
little bit like this off to the left go
ahead and click and then hold ctrl and
bring that line straight up until it
snaps onto the edge at the top go ahead
and click then hit enter and now let's
turn off our snap two pads and we'll go
to our edit pads by nodes tool and we're
going to click on this line and just try
to bring that out to the edge to make it
take the shape of the circle I'm gonna
click on this node right here and grab
this handle and adjust that I'll grab
this handle adjust this and we're just
gonna adjust this until it matches the
shape of the circle as closely as
possible that's what we're aiming for
here alright that's pretty good like
that and we go back to the Select tool
it doesn't have to be precisely exact
but something like that should be pretty
good then we're going to take this
circle over here and let's grab the
rectangles tool and I'm going to click
and drag and create a rectangle going
for the top of this circle just like
maybe like the top quarter maybe a less
than a quarter of the circle about that
much go back to the select tool and I'll
hold shift and click on that circle and
go to path intersection and then I'll
right click that and go to duplicate and
I'll flip that vertically with this
button up here and hold control and
bring this down to here
and then I'm gonna hold shift and click
on the piece above that and I'm gonna
click on this bottom this button down
here that says align top edges of
objects to the bottom edge of the anchor
and that's gonna put those two together
like that and we go ahead and go to path
Union and then let's hold ctrl and shift
and scale this thing down pretty small
maybe about that size and then click it
a second time to get the rotation
handles and I'm gonna hold ctrl and
scale this thing around I'm gonna rotate
it around about that much and then I'm
gonna right click that and go to
duplicate and I'll flip that
horizontally and I'll hold control and
bring this out here so we want these two
shapes like this we want two of these
shapes positioned like that and what
we're gonna do is we're going to grab
this first shape right here and let's
right click that and go to copy we want
to make sure we have that copied to our
clipboard and we're going to click on
this little shape right here we're gonna
go to path path effect editor and from
this drop down we're going to choose
which one is it pattern a long path and
go ahead and click Add and pattern
copies we're gonna want to use repeated
and then let's go ahead and click the
link to path button and you'll see what
happened there took that shape and
linked it around along the path right
there you know what's cool is if you
change these shapes it'll change it
along the paths so I think that's a
little too big I want those leaves to be
a little smaller so I'm going to grab
these two and hold ctrl and shift its
scale that down a little bit see like
that it's just it made it smaller and
added more which is pretty cool and I
want to add a little bit more spacing
between those so I'm going to come down
to the spacing
the spacing option and just push that up
a little bit too much all right that's
good like that and once you do that I'd
say that's pretty good right there we
can right click this and go to duplicate
and hold ctrl and click and drag this
off to the right and we can remove the
path effect from that and send that back
to a line and we can take this one we
could finalize that by going to path
object to path and we'll just make that
a dark gray for now and I'll hold shift
and click on the X to get rid of the
black outline around it I'm gonna take
this one and I'm gonna hold ctrl and
grab this Center arrow and scale it in
so that it kind of fits inside kind of
fits inside this here shape maybe make
that a little bigger yeah that's pretty
good
and then we're going to take this object
right here the one on the left and we'll
right-click that and go to copy and then
we'll click on this line and we're gonna
add we'll go back to the path if you
don't have this menu open already path
effect editor and up here we're gonna
choose pattern along path and go ahead
and click Add and again we're gonna use
repeated for the pattern copies and then
go ahead and click the link to path
button see how that turns out okay again
I'm gonna space these out a little more
I'm gonna go to the spacing and just
increase that a little bit
I'd say that's pretty good right there
and we're gonna finalize this by going
to path object to path we give that the
same shade of gray we gave the other one
hold shift and click on the X to get rid
of the outline and then click off of the
graphic to deselect everything so what
we can do now is we can click and drag
over these two and just press Delete on
the keyboard we're done with those I'm
gonna close out of the path effect
editor menu we're done with that and
with these two right here let's unify
them together by going to path Union and
then we're gonna create a circle so
let's come over to the circles and
ellipses tool and hold ctrl and shift
and click and drag on the canvas to
create a circle like that we'll go to
the Select tool and I'm going to put
this circle inside here in this little
gap right here I'm gonna have to adjust
the size of the circle in order to in
order for it to fit I'm gonna bring the
opacity up on that and I'll take this
and I'll right-click that I'm go to
duplicate and I'll flip that
horizontally hold ctrl and click and
drag this over to the right so that they
are they appear to be even from each
other we can assure that they're evenly
spaced out by clicking and dragging over
all three objects and coming down here
to the distribute panel to where it says
make horizontal gaps between objects
equal we can go ahead and click on that
and now it's mathematically even as far
as the spacing goes so I'm actually just
gonna move this down a little bit that's
pretty good and what I'm gonna do next
is I'm going to take this circle and
right click it and go to duplicate and
I'll turn that white and it'll hold ctrl
and shift and scale in maybe about that
much and then hold shift and click on
the gray circle behind it and go to path
difference and I'm gonna put some text
in here I'm just gonna grab the text
tool click on the canvas I'm just going
to write 2016 I'll go to the text editor
and the font I'm going to use is I
believe it's Optimus princeps
I'll have a link to that in the
description if you'd like to download
and install that yourself
apply and I'll take this the select tool
hold shift in the keyboard and click on
this circle and let's Center that on the
vertical and horizontal axis and then
click off of the graphic to deselect
everything and I'm gonna click on this
I'm gonna make that the same shade of
grey that the rest of the graphic is
I'll hold ctrl and shift and scale this
out until it fits in there and then I'll
take this little black ring right here
I'm going to right click that and go to
duplicate and we'll turn this red and
drop the opacity down about in half for
now so we can see what we're doing and
I'm gonna go to path break apart path
Union and then I'm gonna hold ctrl and
shift and scale this circle out until
it's going about between the via the
rows of leaves right there and then I'm
gonna give this a black outline by
holding shift and clicking on the dark
gray color and then we'll click on the X
to get rid of the red fill and bring the
opacity back up and that line is a
little thin so we'll come over to the
strike stroke style tab and let's try
out a size 4 see how that looks alright
that's pretty good I'm gonna hold ctrl
and shift and scale this in a little bit
it's still a little
that's pretty good right there and once
it's positioned well we're gonna go
ahead and go to path stroke the path and
then we can go to our we can go to our
bezzie a pen you just click B on the
keyboard to grab that tool and I'm gonna
start this line right here and click and
hold ctrl and bring this line up here
I'm gonna bring this over here
hold ctrl bring that line down at a
similar angle click connect it back to
the starting point we're just gonna sort
where basically drawing a shape around
the portion of that ring that goes
beneath the leaves right there I'm gonna
do the same thing down here I'll start
this line out here click hold ctrl and
send that in and an angle click put this
over here click hold ctrl and bring that
down at the same angle connect it back
to the starting point go to the select
tool and I'm gonna hold shift and click
on that that other shape that we drew
and unify this together by going to path
Union then I'll hold shift and click on
that black ring right there and go to
path intersection and then we could
click and drag over this whole thing and
group it together and I'm gonna hold
ctrl and shift and scale this down a
little bit and I'm going to add some
more text down here at the bottom I'll
go back to the text tool I'm just gonna
use caps and write special award just
for just for the sake of this tutorial
I'll go back to that same font the
optimist princeps there is close that of
that make that the same shade of grey
hold shift click on that graphic and
Center it up on the vertical axis and
I'll take this and move this up hold
ctrl and shift and scale it in and
that's pretty good you could play with
this and color it in however you see fit
and that's pretty much it that's how you
can make a very simple award type of
graphic using Inkscape so if you have
