| 1. What are fractions and how are they represented? |  |
Ans. Fractions are a way to represent a part of a whole. They are written in the form of a numerator and a denominator, such as \( \frac{a}{b} \), where \( a \) is the numerator (the number of parts we have) and \( b \) is the denominator (the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into). For example, in the fraction \( \frac{3}{4} \), 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.

Ans. To add or subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator. If they do, simply add or subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator. For example, \( \frac{1}{4} + \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1+2}{4} = \frac{3}{4} \). If the fractions have different denominators, find a common denominator, convert the fractions, and then add or subtract.
| 3. What is the difference between proper and improper fractions? | |
Ans. A proper fraction is one where the numerator is less than the denominator, such as \( \frac{3}{5} \). An improper fraction, on the other hand, has a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator, like \( \frac{5}{4} \) or \( \frac{6}{6} \). Improper fractions can also be converted into mixed numbers, which consist of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Ans. To simplify a fraction, divide both the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, to simplify \( \frac{8}{12} \), find the GCD of 8 and 12, which is 4. Dividing both by 4 gives \( \frac{2}{3} \), which is the simplified form of the fraction.

Ans. Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the same value. To find equivalent fractions, you can multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number. For example, \( \frac{1}{2} \) is equivalent to \( \frac{2}{4} \) because both fractions simplify to the same value when calculated.
