1. What are fractions and how are they represented?

Ans. Fractions are a way to represent a part of a whole. They consist of two numbers: the numerator, which is the top part, and the denominator, which is the bottom part. For example, in the fraction ¾, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator. This means that if you divide something into 4 equal parts, 3 of those parts are being considered.

2. How do you add and subtract fractions?

Ans. To add or subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator. If they don’t, you need to find a common denominator. For example, to add ¼ and ⅓, you first convert them to have a common denominator of 12: ¼ becomes 3/12 and ⅓ becomes 4/12. Then, you can add them: 3/12 + 4/12 = 7/12. For subtraction, the process is similar.

3. What is the difference between proper and improper fractions?

Ans. A proper fraction is when the numerator is less than the denominator, such as ⅖. An improper fraction is when the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, like 7/4. Improper fractions can also be expressed as mixed numbers, which combine a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 1⅓.

4. How can fractions be simplified?

Ans. To simplify a fraction, you divide both the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For instance, to simplify 8/12, you find that the GCD of 8 and 12 is 4. Dividing both by 4 gives you 2/3, which is the simplified form of the fraction.

5. Why are fractions important in everyday life?

Ans. Fractions are important because they help us understand and work with parts of a whole in real-life situations. For example, they are used in cooking to measure ingredients, in budgeting to manage money, and in construction to measure lengths. Understanding fractions allows us to make precise calculations and informed decisions in various activities.
