Which one of the following is a linear transformation?
  • a)
    T : R2 ---> R2 defined by T(x, y) = (xy, x)
  • b)
    T : R2 ---> R3 defined by T(x, y) = (x + 3, 2y, x+y)
  • c)
    T : R3 ---> R2 defined by T(x, y, z) = (Ix| , y + z)
  • d)
    None of these
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Veda Institute answered
Let (1,2) and (3,4) be two vectors of R2.
Then T[(1, 2) + (3,4)] = T(4, 6)]
= (4 x 6, 4) = (24, 6)
and T(l, 2) = (1 x 2,1) = (2, 1)
T(3, 4) = (3 x 4,.3) = (12, 3) Thus,T(l, 2) +  T(3, 4) = (2, 1) + (12, 3) = (14, 4)
Therefore, T[(1, 2) + (3 ,4)] ≠ T(1 ,2) + T(3,4)
Hence, T is non linear.
To show that a given map T is a linear transformation we must show that
 T(αx + βy) = αT(x) + βT(y)
where x,y are vectors and a, P are scalars while to show that the given map is non-linear conveniently we try to find a related contrast example.

The orthogonal trajectories of the given family of curves y = cx2 are given by

  • c)

  • d)

Understanding Orthogonal Trajectories
Orthogonal trajectories are curves that intersect a given family of curves at right angles. In this case, we are examining the family of curves defined by y = cx², where c is a constant.
Step 1: Finding the Family of Curves
- The given family is y = cx², which represents a set of parabolas opening upwards.
- Each curve corresp

    Understanding Inflection Points
    An inflection point occurs where the curve changes its concavity, meaning that the second derivative of the function changes sign. For the function y = x^3 - 6x^2 + 12x - 3, we need to find the second derivative and its critical points.
    Step 1: Finding the First Derivative
    - The first derivative, y', is calculated as:

    Which of the following group is cyclic
    1) Z2 *Z4

    Explanation of Cyclic Group:
    Cyclic groups are groups that can be generated by a single element, which is called a generator. In a cyclic group, every element can be expressed as a power of the generator.

    Z2 * Z4:
    - Z2 is the group of integers modulo 2 under addition, {0, 1}, and Z4 is the group of integers modulo 4 under addition, {0, 1, 2, 3}.

    Number of Improper Subgroups in a Group

    In a group, the number of improper subgroups is always 2. This is a fundamental property of group theory.

    Definition of an Improper Subgroup:
    An improper subgroup of a group G is a subgroup that contains the identity element of the group and the group itself. In other words, it is the entire group G.

      Surface area of the Solid generated by revolving about y - axis is 2πa2

    Gaurav Rao answered  •  Nov 15, 2023
    To find the surface area of the solid generated by revolving the curve about the x-axis, we can use the formula for the surface area of revolution:

    S = 2π∫[a, b] y * √(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

    First, let's solve the equation of the curve x^2 + y^2 = a^2 for y:

    y^2 = a^2 - x^2

    y = ±√(a^2 - x^2)

    Since we are only interested in the positive y-values, we

    Gaurav Rao answered  •  Oct 30, 2023
    By Cauchy's theorem, since p and q are primes dividing the order of the group G, there exist elements a and b in G of order p and q respectively.

    Consider the subgroup H = . Since the order of a is p, the order of H is p. Therefore, H is a cyclic subgroup of G of order p.

    Similarly, consider the subgroup K = . Since the order of b is q, the order of K is q. Therefore, K
