An open cubical tank of 2 m side is filled with water. If the tank is ...
Solution:
Given, side of the open cubical tank = 2 m
Volume of the tank = (side)3 = 2×2×2 = 8 m3
Density of water, ρ = 1000 kg/m3
Acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.81 m/s2

To find: Acceleration of the tank, a

Calculation:
The weight of water in the tank, W = Volume × Density × g
W = 8 × 1000 × 9.81 = 78480 N

When the tank is accelerated horizontally, a force is applied on the water in the opposite direction to the acceleration of the tank. This causes the water to spill out of the tank.

Let the acceleration of the tank be a.
Force applied on the water in the opposite direction to the acceleration of the tank, F = ma
Where m is the mass of the water spilled out of the tank.

As half of the water spills out of the tank, the mass of the water spilled out, m = 0.5 × Volume × Density
m = 0.5 × 8 × 1000 = 4000 kg

F = ma
78480 = 4000a
a = 19.62 m/s2

Therefore, the acceleration of the tank is 19.62 m/s2, which is equal to g × 2 = 9.81 × 2 = 19.62 m/s2.

Hence, the correct option is (D) g.
