Solve for x : 6x2 + 40 = 31x
  • a)
  • b)
  • c)
    0,8/3
  • d)
    None of the above
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Nirmal Kumar answered
6x²-31x+40=0,
a=6,
b=-31,
c=40,
by quadratic formula-->
x=-b±√b²-4ac/2a,
by putting the values of a,b and c, we get,
x=-(-31)±√(-31)²-4(6)(40)/2(6),
=31±√961-960/12,
=31±√1/12,
=31±1/12,
x=30/12or ,32/12,
x=5/2 or, 8/3,
hence , option B is correct

A shopkeeper buys a number of books for Rs. 80. If he had bought 4 more for the same amount, each book would have cost Re. 1 less. How many books did he buy?
  • a)
    8
  • b)
    16
  • c)
    24
  • d)
    28
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Given, a shopkeeper buys a number of books for Rs. 80.

Let the number of books he bought be x.

Then, the cost of each book = 80/x

According to the question, if he had bought 4 more books for the same amount, each book would have cost Re. 1 less.

So, the new number of books he would have bought = x + 4

And, the cost of each book would be = 80/(x+4)

Also, it is given that each book would have cost Re. 1 less, so we can write:

80/x - 1 = 80/(x+4)

Simplifying this equation, we get:

80x + 320 = 80x - x^2 + 4x

Rearranging and simplifying further, we get:

x^2 - 4x - 320 = 0

Factorizing this quadratic equation, we get:

(x - 20)(x + 16) = 0

So, the possible values of x are 20 and -16. But since x represents the number of books he bought, it cannot be negative. Therefore, x = 20.

Hence, the shopkeeper bought 20 books.

The equation 12x² + 4kx + 3 = 0 has real and equal roots, if
  • a)
    k = ±3
  • b)
    k = ±9
  • c)
    k = 4
  • d)
    k = ±2
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Kds Coaching answered
Here a = 12, b = 4k, c = 3
Since the given equation has real and equal roots
∴ b² – 4ac = 0
⇒ (4k)² – 4 × 12 × 3 = 0
⇒ 16k² – 144 = 0
⇒ k² = 9
⇒ k = ±3

 The roots of the equation 7x² + x – 1 = 0 are
  • a)
    real and distinct
  • b)
    real and equal
  • c)
    not real
  • d)
    none of these
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Kds Coaching answered
 Here a = 2, b = 1, c = -1
∴ D = b² – 4ac = (1)² – 4 × 2 × (-1) = 1 + 8 = 9 > 0
∴ Roots of the given equation are real and distinct.

The roots of the equation (b – c) x² + (c – a) x + (a – b) = 0 are equal, then
  • a)
    2a = b + c
  • b)
    2c = a + b
  • c)
    b = a + c
  • d)
    2b = a + c
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Kds Coaching answered
Since roots are equal
∴ D = 0 => b² – 4ac = 0
⇒ (c – a)² -4(b – c) (a – b) = 0
⇒ c² – b² – 2ac -4(ab -b² + bc) = 0 =>c + a-2b = 0 => c + a = 2b
⇒ c² + a² – 2ca – 4ab + 4b² + 4ac – 4bc = 0
⇒ c² + a² + 4b² + 2ca – 4ab – 4bc = 0
⇒ (c + a – 2b)² = 0
⇒ c + a – 2b = 0
⇒ c + a = 2b

_______ began to maintain an Index of Prohibited Books from 1558.
  • a)
    Monarchs
  • b)
    Orthodox Church
  • c)
    Protestants
  • d)
    Roman Church
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Monarchs

The Index of Prohibited Books was first introduced by the Roman Church in the 16th century. However, in 1558, it was the monarchs who began to maintain their own version of the Index of Prohibited Books.

Reason for Maintaining the Index

The monarchs maintained the Index of Prohibited Books in order to control the spread of ideas that they deemed dangerous or subversive. They wanted to maintain their authority and prevent any literature that could potentially challenge their rule or cause unrest among the population.

Impact of the Index

The Index of Prohibited Books had a significant impact on intellectual freedom and the spread of knowledge during this time period. Many important works of literature, philosophy, and science were banned and suppressed, limiting the access of the general population to new ideas and advancements in various fields.

End of the Index

The practice of maintaining an Index of Prohibited Books eventually fell out of favor as ideas of intellectual freedom and freedom of speech began to take hold. The last edition of the Roman Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books was published in 1948, and it was officially abolished in 1966.
