She was the official to be spoken to on duty.
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Akshita Kaur answered
The correct answer is option 'A'.

The given sentence is "She spoke to the official on duty." We need to rewrite this sentence in the passive voice.

Passive voice: In the passive voice, the subject of the sentence undergoes the action. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb "to be" followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Identifying the subject, verb, and object:
- Subject: She
- Verb: spoke
- Object: the official on duty

Constructing the passive voice sentence:
To construct the passive voice sentence, we need to make the object (the official on duty) the subject of the sentence and the subject (She) the object.

Passive voice sentence: The official on duty was spoken to by her.

Explanation:
- The subject "She" becomes the object in the passive voice sentence.
- The object "the official on duty" becomes the subject in the passive voice sentence.
- The verb "spoke" changes to "was spoken to" in the passive voice sentence.
- The preposition "by" is used to indicate who performed the action.

Option analysis:
a) The official on duty was spoken to by her - This is the correct passive voice construction of the given sentence.
b) The official was spoken to by her on duty - This sentence is grammatically correct, but the placement of "on duty" suggests that "her" was on duty, which is not the intended meaning.
c) She was spoken to by the official on duty - This sentence is in the passive voice, but the subject "She" is the one being spoken to, not the official on duty.
d) She was the official to be spoken to on duty - This sentence changes the meaning and does not accurately reflect the original sentence.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A' - The official on duty was spoken to by her.
